ipod vs the competition..

overpriced? I woudnt say overpriced. It's an mp3 player. I Bought mine for just 180£ [UK pounds]

iPODs cost more than other MP3 players which, to anyone not bothered about user-friendliness, fulfill the function of playing MP3s to a similar or better standard therefore they are overpriced.

I'd like to own an ipod, they're very pretty and all, but overpriced.... And the sound isn't great either......

I dunno about this... the soudn quality on my ipod is GREAT! The thing that sucked were those horrible "earbuds" they give you.. those things were terrible.. and made the music sound like crap! Plus! They did'nt fit into my ears... and they ended up hurting my ears and giving me a headache

I bought Sony Fontopia earbuds.. the sound quality is EXCELLENT. And they fit into my ears like BUTTTTAAAAAH.

Like everything Apple makes, iPOD is actually a bit crap. Again, like everything Apple makes, iPOD's look nice, are a nice size and have a very nice interface. However, continuing the analogy, the competition is bigger, better and probably uglier. Creative Labs products are easily as good - I've been using Creative Labs soundcards in my PC since before most of you knew what a PC was and I can verify that their customer-service is excellent as is the sound quality.
Very true, I had 2 different mp3 players before my iPod and both were much better in sound, battery life and basically everything else but storage. I think people just buy iPods because of the design because there is nothing that great about them compared to other mp3 players.

Creative Zen Xtra goes up to 60 Gigabytes as does the iPOD and iRIVER. You could just go with 12 iPODs or whatever it is Karla carries.

iPOD goes up to 60 Gigabytes? I thought the max. was 40..

If there's a 60 GB iPOD I'd really be interested in getting it..

I just prodded the Apple man on IRC and he says that actually the 60 Gigabyte iPOD isn't out yet but to expect it to be unveiled in around 60 days time. Until then it's the Zen Xtra.

I have an ipod, it broke. I told my friend not to get one, she still did, and a few weeks back (she bought it a few months ago) it broke. In fact, my first ipod (i had to get it exchanged after a few days of having it) wouldn't even work when I got it, and I took it back to John Lewis, and the really helpful expert there told me that ipods looks good, but they just don't work. I (or my Dad, if you want to get technical) spent £400 on it. I read this whole article by this writer who bought all this apple stuff, like notebooks, and when the apple technician came to his house to pick it up, he just said, "do you know how many faulty items i pick up from this street each month?" Apple makes great looking stuff, but it all breaks in the end.

Oh and another stupid question..if you have mp3s on your iPOD, can you copy them back to your comp.?

Can you tell I'm not a computer/iPOD expert..

Blahk..that seriously sucks. I don't know, I always found Apple computers kind of awkward. They look great, but...I just don't know. Somehow I have a tiny little distrust for Apple. Without any justification, really.

I have a 4th generation (the latest version) 40GB iPod. I love it. I am a PC user but when I went shopping for a music player...the others just didn't add up. I needed something big enough and strong enought to hold all of my music (since I transferred all of my cds to my ipod). It's just easier.

Good luck with your choice. :flower:

I'm biased, because I've worked with iPods and don't really have any experience with other players. I think it's great! And Apple stuff does break, just like other manufacturers stuff, let's be fair... Apple is certainly not worse than the competition! Personally, I've had quite a few PowerBooks/iBooks/iMacs/Power Macs privately and at work, and I've never had any real problems. Just sayin'.

I bought an iPod mini a few months back. I'm 100% happy with it, love the sound, the look, and the great phone support I received when I had problems downloading songs from my computer (it was a problem with the shared network, not the iPod).

iPod Photo is available in 60GB, but the non-photo version will presumably be cheaper, unless they add something else to it.

nope thats a MAJOR downfall for me... i didnt know that, so i uploaded all my music off my comp onto my ipod then deleted my music files b/c my comp as going soooooo slow. then i uploaded new songs and went to use my ipod the next time and i had like 15 songs, when i should have like 4,000. sucked so bad.

so i went out and bought an exterior hard drive for the sole purpose of saving my music files on so that it wont happen again.

Now, I've had soo many problems with my ipod. it freezes, skips over music it doesnt want to listen to, changed volume for no reason, wont let me access its info, turns off for no reason and has incredibly short battery life.

however, on good days, its my best friend. i love it. the good times make up for the bad, the customer service is amazing, they replaced my ipod twice, gave me free laser engraving and are really easy to get ahold of for questions and their website is easily navigated...

If I were to buy another mp3 player I'd get iriver, here's the 20GB iriver:

iriver.jpg

Some features:
- Built-in FM tuner and FM recorder
- Displays your digital photos
- Rechargeable battery lasts up to 16 hours
- Integrated voice recorder

They sound a lot better that iPods.

Sound quality is, as far as I see, very subjective. Anyway, I find the sound quality of my ipod mini excellent. Just like plucking my Bose system into my ears. Agree about the earpieces though. I want to get those good Shure in-ear earpieces!

I really don't like the look of Creative. And I've heard of many people's Creative dying on them. If I were to choose, I would go for either iPod or iRiver.

Im not sure if i want to buy an ipod, i have about 4 friends who frequently have problems with their mini's or 20gb's.

thanks so much everyone :woot: .. I'm now considering buying an iriver.. not sure yet though.. ipod is still in the back of my head for some reason..

.. must be the design and all the other accesories availible!

Kare2711... Sony has some great earbuds out... I have a pair.. they're so great... I cannot rave about them enough.

Ocean, How old is your ipod? You're scaring me
