hello, this is my first post here but i have been silently following this whole forum. So this is hello.
This thread is interesting to me as I am Turkish but have lived abroad my whole life. I have a different perspective.
I go back to Istanbul every summer, and i have to disagree with mimiko..
I think there is definately a percievable street style. It is easy to miss if you actually live there but i notice it. I believe that, people dress very very good. Istanbul, in the old days as we say the Old Istanbullites, really knew how to dress and act. With the recent influx of migrants who are uneducated, this has caused what you say very bad dressed people. Anyways, in general, People understand fashion. I live on Bagdat Avenue, so i see the young people all dressed up out and about. I wouldnt call them ALL of fashionistas but they are trendy nonetheless. There is that look that is specfic to every neighborhood. The Etiler crowd, the Bagdat kids, the nisantasi folks. Cihangir and the Taksim Istiklal.
There are so many things that are only trendy in Istanbul, and not the rest of the world. Things have there phases (i.e Barbour, while right now its Abercrombie and F&M). Among the older crowd, i say just go to Armani cafe in the day, and Anjelique by night. The way people put togather clothes and accessoiries, guys and girls, do it very well. Choices of perfum are always right. Tans and skin care are perfecto. Watches and phones. Even the cars they drive, the color combos, i find are rarely ever blaring and offensive.
Alot of my foreign friends were blown away by the amount that people actually care for in how they dress and look after themselves. Here in university, all my Turkish friends are well into fashion. Ive seen things they brought from Istanbul ive never seen before, for instance Fendi sneakers/shoes. People really do spend alot of money on shopping, even the people who arent that loaded. Using the taksit system, a know a guy who has a sizeable amount of designer wear all from Beymen, with out being loaded. Alot of it has to do with the prentenious nature of life in the big city. Not to mention the fact that almost all brands make there stuff in Turkish factories, so if you know the right people you can get stuff straight from the factory for REAL cheap. Eventhough it is against the rules set by the big wigs.
Plus you can find pretty much any brand, Just Leo had Dsquared long before it blew up around the world for instance, and even if there isnt a boutique, you can to places like Planet and order specific pieces and theyll bring it for you...Now with Harvey Nichols opening along with a string of other boutiques (Dolce and Gabbana boutique within a few months) There will be even more out there... Turkish designers are getting more and more recognition not only in fashion but also in interior design furniture and cusine..
Things can only get better
