I believe it's for a role he has in a movie and to tell you the truth, soap acting's much tougher to do because they rely on the first take so it's really intense (that's what he said in an interview). BTW, General Hospital was a great choice compared to other soaps .

maybe he wanted to be an actor who does it all: tv, stage, film. Some actors like to just act no matter where it is, to hone their skills and that sort of thing. touch every avenue. i don't understand it but i've heard of it.
