James Franco has been looking scruffy lately, but maybe it's all been research for his big role next summer in a Planet of the Apes prequel. James has signed on to play the lead in the updated Apes story.
In Rise of the Apes, a genetics experiment ends up bestowing human-like intelligence to apes leading to an inevitable clash over things like captivity, experimentation and dressing monkeys in tuxedos and teaching them to smoke cigars (I kid!). James will play the young, hunky scientist at the center of this whole mess, but he'll have to be careful. Critics and audiences were not kind to Mark Wahlberg and Tim Burton who starred in and directed (respectively) the 2001 update of Planet of the Apes.
James has been busy lately. He was recently accepted into Yale's English Ph.D program, but hasn't yet committed. He's also been working on the soap opera General Hospital, and stars in the new indie film Howl, and Danny Boyle's upcoming hiker nightmare story based on real facts, 127 Hours.
Next summer we can also expect to see James playing the title role in Ricky Stanicky, a comedy about three friends who hire him to pretend to be the fake person they've been blaming things on for the last 20 years.
