Joan Smalls

^OMG!! Don't tell me that!!!
I might faint!!!

 I wasn't confirming anything. Calm down! I'm only hoping that someone other than M&M or Karl Lagerfeld will shoot her for a big campaign someday. I've been side-eyeing Testino & Sorrenti for years now....maybe Klein will be Joan's third big photographer to support her with more than just editorials.

According to her instagram she has about six shoots that are still not out. Secretly hoping her shoot in turkey has to do with us vogue or at least a turkish vogue cover.

Don't worry. I'm very calm.:flower: I know you didn't confirm anything BB.
But just the thought that it could possibly happen one day, if they develop a cool relationship. That's enough to get anyone excited. Agreed?

Steven Klein has always been one of my favorite photographers even before Joan had her big break. He's edgy style kicks ***!! So... just the thought of their collaboration in anything makes me excited.

And I still can't believe Karl is one of her most loyal supporters? I would of bet my life that he would use Joan once as a gimmick, and dump her as soon as he could. I guess he showed me!! :ninja:

And then there's Meisel and Testino... They like and support her, so it just makes me shake my head!   Why?
Soo many missed opportunities. Many campaigns she would of been a shoe in for, just lost in the wind... I don't get it? :(

At least they give her editorials. Joan is well rounded that's important. Some photographers give her Editorials, others covers, and the rest campaigns!

And oh god! Somebody please stop me!! lol
Don't let me go off on another tangent of how it's just wrong that Joan, my Puerto Rican Princess , hasn't received any of those major VOGUE covers, (Vogue Paris, British Vogue, Vogue Italia, I'm looking at you!), as the #1 model in the world, since 2012, just because she's an ethnic model. I'll go mad! I really shouldn't be laughing. Its really sad...

I think these racist acts towards models of colour would make anybody go bloody mad!!!

Moving on... What do we think the shoot with Joan wearing an afro on her Instagram is all about? Any exciting speculations?
It looks like it's going to be a great Editorial from that selfie. She knows how to make an afro look fierce! I'll call her the Puerto Rican Foxy Joan, when that work is released!!

^Judging by the afro & the styling, it looks like something for V magazine, maybe? You know they like those fun, campy shoots. Remember when Joan was Tina Turner for the mag? She looks like Foxy Cleopatra in that twit pic, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's for V…

And it's been over a year since Meisel has even shot Joan. I wouldn't call him a loyal supporter of her at all. He shot her many times early in her career, but he does that with a lot of newer models. Testino, however, shocks me. She should've had an Etro campaign by now. That or at least a commercial campaign by him. I just want her to have a really strong season for F/W 14, with campaigns & covers from many different photographers.

^Testino and Roberto Cavalli's campaigns always come to mind every season as-well. She should of been in at least 2 campaigns by now, ever since her first debut!!! :ermm:

I also get frustrated at Meisel, but he at least gave her two very major covers, and that one ONLY GIRL US Vogue editorial, but that was sooo long ago!!!

And to add insult to injury he has never given her a single campaign!!! :important
I just wish he was more loyal like in his early days... :(

Why claim that Joan and Karlie are the Supermodern Supermodels and then stop supporting them? Why? I don't get it?

Also, Joan hasn't even had her own Italian Vogue cover with an ONLY GIRL editorial, like Karlie, Fei Fei, Edie, Candice, Miranda, Adriana, Lexi Boling, Vanessa...I mean the list can go on....
And Joan is the number #1 model in the world right now!!! It saddens me!

He's known for creating and nurturing supermodels. Where's the support from Meisel now? :(

So... I just really find it sad that he kind of abandoned our Joanie. :(

I think you might be right Valli, about Meisel's loyalty or lack thereof. :(

I guess I'm just going to throw in the towel in hopes for a Joan + Meisel major work collaboration.

At least they created some great work together and maybe in 10 years they'll collaborate again. Who know?

Meisel isn't shooting the number of campaigns he used to. Its pretty much Prada, Lanvin, Balenciaga. Ashley casts Prada and she doesn't seem to be a fan of Joan so i doubt Prada would ever happen. Alber doesn't seem to be a fan of Joan (she's only walked it once). Nicholas puts his favs or models both he and meisel like in the Balenciaga campaigns.

She's only shot for Vogue Paris twice in the last 2 years right? Alt isn't a fan like Carine is. It could happen though. She hasn't shot for British vogue since 2012, unless models.com is lying. Besides British vogue is just like Vogue US its all about who can move covers. Its why Kate is on some many of them.

Nicholas isn't at Balenciaga anymore and Meisel isn't the one shooting the campaigns. Joan started walking Balenciaga after Wang took over which is good for her because he is a fan of hers. Also, Steven Klein shoots the campaigns, so hopefully her now shooting with him will lead to at least one of them.

It's a quiet period now for Joan, but this is how it's always been. She always starts off the year with a bang, not much in the summer months, and then end with a bang.

For what it's worth, I believe her Estee Lauder contract was recently renewed.

Finally, I do think that Joan will be fine. Take a look at her resume and you will see how iconic it is. From multiple campaigns for Gucci, to Versace, Chanel, Fendi etc plus a major contract. Regualar editorials + covers... Over the past few years, which model other than the supers can boast having MAJOR US magazine covers?? (US ELLE, and W)

What I think Joan needs to do now is start focusing on side business ventures like Karlie is doing. She has her Karlie's Kookies venture, Her collaboration with Frame Jeans, and most recently her sunglasses collection with Warby Parker. Joan needs to start doing the same. I mean Miranda Kerr is selling tea sets... :ninja:

^^Meisel could of easily cast Joan for the Moschino campaign. The cast was legendary. He made that vile ghetto collection look like a masterpiece and desirable. She would of been in good company! Or how about giving Joan a proper Vogue Italian cover?

She's only shot for Vogue Paris twice in the last 2 years right? Alt isn't a fan like Carine is. It could happen though. She hasn't shot for British vogue since 2012, unless models.com is lying. Besides British vogue is just like Vogue US its all about who can move covers. Its why Kate is on some many of them.

But that isn't always the case Vogue US puts many cover stars that don't sell well like Gwyneth. But because Anna likes what she likes she has the last say. Queen supreme!

^ And for British Vogue Kati Nescher and Edie got covers. I didn't even know who Edie was, she was new to the scene with a new look and they proclaimed her as a supermodel! Lol
I highly doubt they sold well.

But...I get, I get! They are pro British models, but something is wrong when all their Cover stars are white!! !
Isn't London a melting pot now?

What about Naomi? Why is she lacking covers? And Jourdan seems popular. Where are her covers?

How about having the best of the best as your covers stars? And isn't having Joan the #1 one model in the world keeping with the prestige of your British Vogue Magazine?

Lara Stone never had this problem as the #1 model in the world....I can tell you that much!! And she's back better than ever scoring those coveted covers and campaigns!!

What I'm getting from these editors is that if you're an ethnic model you won't sell covers and, thus will never be featured in a Main British Vogue Cover, unless you're a pop star like Beyonce!
Disturbing!!!!

No effort added to be inclusive because of pure racism. Yes! I've said!!
Instead of nurturing and promoting these models of colour, they're just putting them in the back burner. They don't want them! Period.

It's not only about people in industry doing racist acts, but not being racist people themselves. Some of these people are in fact real racist *******!!

One slow month out of the damn year won't kill them. They need to make an effort!!!

That goes for Vogue Paris as-well. I'm sure there's a weak month every year that they can take a risk and show some diversity initiative!!!

You dont have to be a person of colour to easily figure these things out. Come on now...

Their just Insulting our intelligence!

The models of color not selling magazines is such rubbish! Below are two quotes from Robbie Myers - Editor in chief of US ELLE.

We always put women on our covers who are at an inflection point in their lives, professionally or personally. We had [model] Joan Smalls on [the cover in] January and the response was incredible.”

Why did Joan Smalls make the cover star cut for January?
There is just so much positive energy around Joan, she’s a real force in the fashion world, and also has an interesting, inspiring story. She’s classically beautiful, but has a totally modern look.

How do they do these covers do on the newsstand?
Great! Just as with celebrities, it’s all about timing and what’s going on culturally. Both Joan and Kate Upton did well for us.

^You see right there!!!!
It's not even a surprise! We already knew what was going on!! :furious: No big shocker! It's just sad!

Thank you LeChapeau for that wonderful info!!! :flower:
Some of these Editors are despicable and full of **** with their unimaginitive excuses.

^Yes! Yes! Yes! You read my mind!!! :woot:

I was just thinking about Joan and her future business ventures not to long ago.

Why is it taking so long?

Also, how will she balance creating a successful business while not jeopardizing her successful High Fashion career and avoid any backlash from the industry for branding and expanding her business?

And what kind of business willl she eventually invest her time into?

Hopefully she's already strategizing on the optimum way to start a successful business that would fit her lifestyle brand.

I know she's a very abitious and smart women and I'm sure she already has a few business ideas in mind.

She has always stated that modeling should be treated as a business and that she's always admired models like Gisele, Heidi, ect.... for their business savvy.

She's already branding herself which is a step in the right direction! :)

I would love to see her pull a Milla Jovovich & star in some big action movies. She has that fierce, action hero/villain look that would work well on the big screen. I don't really want her going down the same route as Karlie & selling "kookies" or anything like that. That works for Karlie because she's a VS angel & those girls can go as commercial as they want, but I think Joan would do better branching off into different fields of entertainment, like acting & hosting. That in itself is a form of branding. Wouldn't it be great to see her as a coach on The Face? I would love that. She has the potential to be VERY well known outside of the fashion industry. She's already gotten a taste of real fame with the "Yonce" video, but if she had a starring role in an Estee Lauder commercial that played on the prime time channels, along with H&M commercials & some TV appearances, she'd be a very well-known supermodel. Right now I think she's going through a transition period. Her agents just need to figure out what's next in her career. Regardless of which direction she goes, I hope she continues to book HF jobs & walk a few shows every season.

I'm trying to think of all the campaigns she has a shot at this season. We know Gucci is a slight possibility, but that Natasha rumor makes me too nervous to even get my hopes up. Bottega Veneta really suited Joan this season imo. Stella McCartney also seems like a possibility. She's been a campaign girl for the brand, she's opened the show before, & this season they let her & Cara dance down the runway for the finale. Could those two be the campaign girls? Cross our fingers & hope for the best! Let's see what else….Roberto Cavalli? Only if Sims or I&V don't shoot it. They've never been big supporters of her. I can't think of anything else big other than those four….Tom Ford needs to start using supermodels again. -_-

ETA- Missoni maybe? She closed the show….

This season is a tricky one. I can only think of Gucci, but i dont know how that will play out...

I honestly have no idea what other campaigns she has up her sleeves. I'm at a lost!

I'm crossing my fingers Valli for something good.

I want her last year as the Number #1 model to end with a bang!!! :boxer:

Karma for you LeChapeau, Thank you for your invaluable information!!! :flower:
Also, Karma for you too Nepenthes for your great observations and points of view.:flower:
And of course Valli always contributing.^_^

I dont want to leave anyone out, So thank you all! :)

We need to keep these kinds of serious conversations going until we see actual change.

Not to get in the way of the discussion but Models.com is choosing a new number soon? Because of her work or is it a routine thing after a certain amount of time?

^Every two years or so a new #1 is choosen.

Its a very diffucult process. The model must have a good track record and comnections that would last at least two years. Imagine if a blip got crowned #1? One season she's booked for everthing and the following season, no campaigns, B-List shows and bad commercial job!

Thats why it was hard to choose after Lara. Between Karlie and Joan.

Karlie was missing the coveted makeup contract and top Blue-chip campaigns.

Joan had the Estée Lauder contract in the bag and just shot the Chanel campaign and was working with Steven Meisel.

Plus she is the muse for Mert & Marcus, Karl, Frida Giannini, Ricardo Tisci, Prabal Gurung, Peter Dundas and maybe Tom Ford and has close connections with (Vogue) Anna Wintour, (W) Edward Enninful, (Elle) Robbie Myers, Mario Testino and other top photographers,
Plus Alexander Wang, Stella McCartney and other top Designers,
Carine Roitfeld, Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele and other top Stylist,
plus top makeup artist, hair stylist and casting directors.

She repeats those coveted top blue-chip campaigns like Gucci and Fendi which are extremely difficult campaigns to book in the first place. Never mind that Joan is Latina, Mixed-race.
And we need to remember that an ethnic model scoring all these top jobs elevated her status even further.

In short they want a number #1 who is able to maintain longevity and pretige in the industry.
Think Liya, Karen, Daria, Stella...
