Jonathan Anderson - Designer, Creative Director of J.W. Anderson & Dior Men

SO….
JW will be in Dior W + M AND in JWA? How will he physically manage?? Cray….
Even with super fiable and dedicated teams, I’d book a Lanserhof or Aman after each collection.
Jokes aside, it’s too much, for him and for us, Dior is in the big league and there is a business rational to have two CDs, one for menswear, one for womenswear. That’s how they operated for the last 30 years, that’s how other big guys operate : Vuitton, Hermès and that’s what they should have done at Gucci after Lallo.
Mens and womens are extremely different markets, and the commercial pressure will be enormous, when they expect multiple billions of sales in both markets.

Exactly! That’s why I wonder if they will actually go ahead with this model aka have another CD for women’s or make him do everything…. The latter would be a catastrophe

He will be Fashion Director of Dior because Arnault is consolidating the entire maison under one helm for more challenging times. There are rumours that he will ditch prefall and cruise and stick just to 6 collections per year. Very happy for him to finally get some validation from the top but still the way they handling the change of reign is just embarrassing. Can’t wait for his collection for Dior Men (or Homme if he’ll be superb and get back to old name) 🔥

JW Anderson and “superb” in one sentence!!! Guuurl! N O!!!

I dont understand why they've been flirting with the idea of a unified creative director for like 20? years at this point from a management perspective. Is whatever they can gain from it worth the liability of giving a cd that much power and burnout?

I watched The AG.
So the JWA announcement was actually Arnault answering a question asked by one of attendee (I don’t remember if it was a journalist or shareholder) regarding the replacement of Kim Jones. He simply answered: Jonathan Anderson is going to do the next show.

In the highlights, he mentioned Nicolas, Pharrell and Victoire de Castellane. He talked about Dior but never mentioned MGC until he was asked a question about his good decisions. He said hiring good designers was a great decision he think he made, form Jonathan to MGC who he deemed as formidable.

So I don’t think the announcement was planned for this early.

Arnault touched on te fact that he talked to Delphine and Pietro about elevation. So it seems like they are going to take advantage of the current climate to be more exclusive for their top clientele. I think the distribution at Dior is going to be even more exclusive, following the Vuitton model.

I’ve heard that the shows they are doing for Dior Joaillerie and Louis Vuitton Haute Joaillerie are very successful. Maybe it’s a model they will replicate at the big houses.

Fashion Director seems like a good title. It doesn’t interfere with Victoire and Cordelia de Castellane. I hope they will be inspired by JWA to challenge themselves a little bit…Particularly Cordelia. Dior Maison is too traditional…

I think the proof is that he is director of menswear and will inevitably be announced womenswear direction upon MCG departure. I didn’t call him superb but the potential change of the name back to Homme in line with French heritage of brand 😉 He is not superb designer but one of the most important of his generation and that’s a fact not rumour or opinion. 😉

^^
And what is superb is that fashion will be back at Dior.
No more useless successions of collabs to sell menswear or superficial feminists postures to sell womenswear.

I hope that this generation of designers taking over big houses will be as competitive as they are ambitious.

That’s ultimately what I miss and what I liked from fashion in the 2000’ to early 10s. They respected each other but they were in competition to display the creativity and the high standards. The talents of others used to drive designers to push fashion forward.

I truly hope that his appointment at Dior and Mathieu at Chanel will lit a fire under the Parisian Fashion Scene's ***. Please no more easy to digest runway, let's save them for trunk shows.

Ditching pre-collections to focus on the main 6? That's an insane power move.

Or does it mean he'll do like how he does at Loewe the last few years, an internal/e-commerce lookbook but not big trunk show/vogue lookbook? So less pressure/save creative energy for the RTW/HC and an interestingly styled lookbook of wearable collection?
