I knew it would happen any time, but still it was unexpected and I was so shocked by the news that I couldn't believe it. It's so deeply sad, but on the other hand he was a legend, a real icon. The king of fashion. And there will be no one else that would be even close to his level.

RIP Karl, and thank you for being such a talented designer.

Look i was lucky enough to spend countless hrs in the presence of Mr Karl Lagerfeld at 31 Rue Cambon & at Palazzo della Civita ...i have done over 60 Chanel & Fendi shows over the last 10 yrs ..He was a Genius level human ..Every-time he walked in the room the vibration changed ..my deepest condolences to everyone at the Atelier in Paris...Especially Olivia Douchez ,Augustin Dol-Maillot, Amanda Sanchez, Aurelie Duclos & Madame Jacqueline ..many many late night fittings & so many castings with these people & Karl....Fendi is gonna be very emotional on Thursday ...i am sad..RIP The KING

A question: Does anybody here have the pr.chanel.com link to the section regarding Lagerfeld's tenure at Chanel? I received it from the French HQ but deleted the email in haste.

It was obvious he was ill after his (I think?) last public appearance at the Camps Elysées in November, then even more obvious after he missed the Couture shows in January. And still it comes as a surprise, and I'm saddened and shocked. As many have said before, he seemed immortal, and his presence seemed as natural as water and air for my whole life.

Some tabloids say he was brought to a hospital on Monday night as an emergency, where he eventually died of pancreatic cancer.
