Interesting quote about couture from Karl from an article in Vanity Fair.

“It is the people who do not have a business anymore who think couture is finished. There is now a different kind of couture for what different circumstances permit. Luxury ready-to-wear is not so far from what couture used to be. Fashion houses are not landmarks. The idea of couture in the 20s through the 50s is false anyway, idealized. Behind the scenes, workers’ conditions were sordid, sleazy, horrible. Now the workrooms are like spas, and the workers are treated like movie stars, because it is so rare to find anyone with skill. The new couture clients are beautiful, young. We have Russians, Indians, Chinese, South Americans. Women from the Gulf countries don’t even come to Paris—the première flies the collections to them.”

He really does have such a deep understanding of the industry- amid all his frivolous remarks, it is easy to forget the knowledge and experience behind what he does...

it is not the first time we hear him complain about oh-how-hard it was in his youth to work at the couture ateliers, is it? "sordid" he seems to say a lot lately.
i worry he may be becoming a little like Yves, hm? but with leather mittens and dry shampoo...

it is true what he says about the ateliers being spas nowadays though... they love so much being there that's why they work until 5 am on the days before the shows, right? who would want to go home and... ummm... sleep?


NOTE: sorry for the karl-atheism... i don't know what's wrong with me... just a weird day, i promise... i think i'm just mad because he only does like 10 shows a year...
i seriously think he should add yet another show to chanel's calendar... like pre-prefall? no... "pre-seasons" are passé... something in early september to set the tone of the new starting season and make nycfw easier to digest, no? what should we call that show?

Baptiste Giabiconi to Appear Nude on Wallpaper Cover

Wallpaper invited Philippe Starck and Karl Lagerfeld to create covers for the October issue. Knowing how Karl's mind works, he really only had three options: his man candy Baptiste Giabiconi wearing nothing but a fur wrap, his man candy Baptiste Giabiconi wearing nothing but high heels, or his man candy Baptiste Giabiconi wearing nothing. He went with option No. 3, if you can imagine. The Kaiser shot Baptiste in a Dior Homme suit for the cover, but then added a layer of paper over that, which you can pull back to reveal his man candy Baptiste naked. Inside the magazine you'll find a 27-page editorial of Baptiste.
Conversely, Philippe's cover depicts an amoeba, a monkey wearing shoes, and a question mark. But who says that can't be just as sexy as a naked male version of Gisele?
