"Almost every collection," he said during one of several discussions over the last two weeks, "is a reflection of my life. There is the French touch, the American comfort of sportswear, the tension of living in Israel and, always, the emotion and sense of Orientalism that comes from Africa."
Mr. Elbaz, studying a model in the mirror, has a different explanation. "I'm not like a show guy," he said. "I take more time. But in the end, enough people talk about the clothes. Where I start a collection and why is not important. Nobody cares if it comes from Uzbekistan or Pakistan or Switzerland. In the end, what matters is that the piece of cloth becomes a dress, and do you want to wear it out in the street. It's the dress and the customer. All the rest is meaningless."
