Lessons from Lonneke: So Go to Mexico Already!

Take me away! Just under four hours on a plane will land you in Cancun, and 45 minutes later, there it is. Playa del Carmen. Known for mega-resorts, spring breakers, sun, sea, sand and plenty of guac, the place can be busy, it’s true. But as I experienced last week, a few quiet spots offer real tranquility. For my birthday, I stayed in one of them with my sister and our boyfriends–Shangrila Caribe, it’s called. There are a few little houses with straw roofs, most of them right on the beach. Relaxing in a hammock, I watched the turquoise sea hit the shore while sunbathers soaked it all in. The food is good, and the rooms and bungalows cost between $150 and $400 a night. We played beach volleyball and ping pong, and the little dive shack supplied us with snorkel equipment so we could check out a nearby lagoon. It was like a place I drew when I was 7 years old, with lamps next to the walking paths that look like little mushrooms out of a fairytale! Very imaginary. The hotel is so close to shopping streets, but it feels so far away since it’s so quiet. It even had a bar ready for watching the different Euro Cup games. I am happy to announce that my country, Holland, won the first two matches. So we go to quarter finals, wooha!

Lessons from Lonneke: Learn to Love Chocolate!

chocolatelonneke2.jpg

The divineLonneke Engel has been a successful model for over a decade, most famously as the face of Ralph Lauren. Now a certified health counselor, Chic Report asked her to share a new health and beauty tip every week. Enjoy!
Who doesn’t love chocolate? It is actually really healthy! It doesn’t deserve the fattening and acne-causing image it has these days. When eaten in small amounts in its purest form, like cacao beans or nibs, it has many nutrients and minerals–especially magnesium, iron, zinc, chromium and antioxidants. Raw chocolate is considered a superfood. The higher percentage of cacao in chocolate, the better. So really, the darker the chocolate, the better. Organic and unprocessed is best. Raw chocolate contains minerals like anandamide, an endorphine, and theobromine, a chemical relative of caffeine. Theobromine is dangerous for dogs and cats, so never feed your pets chocolate! It is also said to be an aphrodisiac, which I would like to believe! Enough reasons for me to keep enjoying chocolate. If you want to know more about raw cacao, go to sunfood.com or davidwolfe.com.

Lessons From Lonneke: Is Your Produce Clean or Dirty?

lonnekemodelbody2.jpg

When to buy standard fruits and veggies, and when to buy organic? I know, I know–organic is much more expensive, but it is better for you and the environment. In some cases, it is necessary to buy organic to avoid horrible pesticides. So I have compiled two lists.
The cleaner ones:
Avocados
Onions
Pineapple
Mangos
Asparagus
Kiwis
Bananas
Broccoli
Cabbage
Eggplant
Sweet corn (frozen)
Sweat peas (frozen)
The dirty ones:
Peaches
Apples
Sweet bell peppers
Celery
Nectarines
Strawberries
Cherries
Lettuce
Grapes
Pears
Spinach
Potatoes
As you can see, a food’s “skin” absorbes the most chemicals, so those that require peeling are usually safer.

Lonneke Lessons: 5 Dangerous Labels To Avoid!

health2.jpg

When you walk into a grocery store, you see all those brightly colored and shiny cereal boxes and soda cans! All with slogans claiming “zero calories,” “low-fat” and “with added vitamins.” If everything looks so healthy, why is a majority of the population so overweight? Manufacturers are so good with word choices that they mislead people into buying their products. For example, “low fat” might mean really “high sugar.” And sugars also make you overweight. I can talk for hours about this, but I will give you 5 terms to watch out for on the ingredient lists–things that are NOT healthy, and show up in many of our foods today. You’re in charge! Especially if you want to still fit into that Versace dress!
1.HYDROGENATED ….oil. (partially) Hydrogenated means they make liquid oil solid. This is mostly done with vegetable oils because it’s cheaper than animal oils for production of food. Basically, they make unsaturated fats into saturated fats. But with this process, also trans fat is created, and we all know that causes heart disease and raises your LDL (bad cholesterol). Not only is that unhealthy, it’s deadly.
2 HIGH FRUCTOSE ….syrup, especially high fructose corn syrup. It’s a cheap sweetener, and you can find it in most foods targeted at children. It’s not good for your blood sugar levels, as it gives you a boost, and then a sudden drop. That’s why some kids are uncontrollable on those foods! Choose things sweetened with fruit juice instead, or with Stevia, brown rice syrup or agave. Some say evaporated cane juice is better because it doesn’t undergo the same processes as sugar, so it has more nutritional value. No real sugar, aspartame, sucralose or other of those fake sugars!
3. Anything CONCENTRATED or ENRICHED. This means they take out all the nutritious ingredients, and if you are lucky, put chemical vitamins and minerals back in. Not good for you at all!
4. ARTIFICIALLY flavored or colored. Chemicals are used. Yikes, that sounds gross!
5. ALL NATURAL doesn’t mean no bad chemicals have been added. It DOES NOT mean organic, or without bad additives. You need to read the ingredient list more to find out if it is good for you.
Remember: fresh and organic food choices are always best, because food that keeps for a long time usually has (bad) additives. But reading food labels is your best path towards better health. So check everything you put in your mouth!

Model Prep 101

Our correspondant Lonneke Engel reports from IMG's Fashion Week pre-session
Wednesday, August 27, 2008
(NEW YORK) Dear Daily,
Yesterday, I gave my first speech to 30 young models from IMG who are going to do the Fashion Week circuit for the first time. David Cunningham's development team put together a great event, and I was honored to be asked to participate. I spoke to them about nutrition, as I am now a certified health counselor, and how they can prepare themselves for these exhausting but exciting weeks of shows, fittings and running from one place to another. And IMG gave us a great setting: its beautifully-decorated rooftop terrace. There was vegetarian, organic sushi galore, as well as amazing healthy drinks.
Of course, all the IMG mangers were present along with the young models who were there to learn and listen. Everyone connected and was happy. It was almost like a party! There were a group of experts, including psychotherapist Betsy Selman-Babinecz, who spoke about the different issues young girls deal with like navigating unknown cities, dealing with language barriers, coping with the pressure of being a perfect model and so on. Justin Selman, a celebrity trainer, gave some tips to exercise in the hotel room. A successful model also has her financial situation in order, so Kurt Schoeppler, a financial advisor and business manager who works for his own firm International Management Advisors Ltd. (after working for IMG as a senior vice president in the financial division) gave advice. He works for a long list of high-profile clients, including model Erin Wasson and basketball player LeBron James. He discussed the challenges and tax issues models face, especially when they just start out.
It was very interesting, as it is a bit complicated working all over the world. Dr. Sherry Shieh, a famous dermatologist and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia University, gave skincare tips. Her product testers were found in the gift bags all the models received, along with fun products from Lancome, Aveeno, Neutrogena, Skinceuticals, Nars, Rembrandt and many more. It was a heavy bag! The girls received Express gift cards and jeans. Zach Eichman, director of global communications at IMG, discussed how to deal with the press during shows and backstage. James Scully, a great casting director, talked about the process of a casting for a show. Natasha Royt, stylist for many shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week including Rag & Bone, gave smart tips for girls to dress to go to those castings. Her motto? Be yourself, wear what's comfortable and come in with a happy face! They both said that models shouldn't take rejection personally--it is just about clothes, the moment and money. The designers have worked hard for months, the clothes are one-of-a-kind samples, their collection is all or nothing. It was interesting to get insight into the minds of designers during these hectic times.
At the end of this interesting night, Ivan Bart, senior vice president, and Maja Chiesi, vice president of IMG, wished all the girls luck. Their team will be there for them 24/7. These girls are lucky--they are prepared for what is coming to them this Fashion Week, and made friends so they don't do this alone. I hope in the future more models will get this kind of fun preparation. It will only benefit the fashion world as a whole. Go Fashion Week!
Kisses,
Lonneke Engel

Lonneke’s Chocolate Dreams

chocolatelonneke2.jpg

Mmm! I have to tell you about Terra Nostra Organic Ricemilk chocolate, as I am absolutely addicted. It is great for lactose-intolerant people like myself! We can indulge now when we think we deserve a treat–without the stuffy nose or allergic reaction afterwards! The dessert comes in 3 different flavors: solid Ricemilk choco Bar, Ricemilk choco bar with almonds and Ricemilk choco bar with truffle center. While they’re all so good, my favorite is the last one. Best of all, it’s organic, fair trade, vegan, kosher certified, wheat free, gluten free, and is sans GMOs, hormones, antibiotics, artificial colors, pesticides and preservatives. Can there be a perfect treat? This comes pretty close!
