Even after Sunday's controversial conclusion to "The Sopranos," two "Lost" executive producers said Wednesday that they weren't planning a murky ending to their hit ABC drama.

"We will not be ending with a blackout," executive producer Carlton Cuse told an audience gathered in Midtown Manhattan for the second day of Promax/BDA's annual conference.

He and co-creator Damon Lindelof answered questions -- but not any of those questions -- and said that they do have an ending for the show that was fleshed out along with the last three seasons during a recently completed writers' "minicamp" before the start of production in August.

"Lost" will end in spring 2010 after 48 more hourlong episodes, 16 per season. Lindelof said "Lost" has to move from asking more questions to answering the questions posed during the series' run.

"Obviously, we can't wait to the 48th hour to say, 'Here are all the mysteries of the show,' " Lindelof said. But Cuse also noted the reality of the sometimes vociferous and heavily engaged viewership of the show, which uses the Web to advance theories and post explanations and even freeze-frames to parse further meaning.

"I'm not sure there is any ending that will satisfy everyone," Cuse said. "Our hope is that the ending will be ... the logical conclusion of the story."

Cuse said the first season was about the Oceanic Flight 815 survivors landing on the island and realizing they weren't going to get rescued. The second season was about the hatch, and the third season was about the Others.

"Next season, well, we'll talk about that later," Cuse said.
While "Lost" viewers will have to wait till next year to see the next TV episodes, Cuse and Lindelof said in the fall there will be a series of "Lost" mobisodes featuring the entire cast and rolling out first on Verizon Wireless and then probably appearing on ABC.com. They said they're keenly aware of the eight-month gap between last month's finale and the return of "Lost" at the beginning of next year.

"How do you keep the show alive in the minds of the audience in that time?" Cuse asked. They're also planning to go back to San Diego's Comic-Con International, where the show was launched, to address May's Season 3 finale and what they had in mind.

Cuse said the mobisodes, about 90 seconds each, will give the hardcore "Lost" viewer more information that they probably weren't going to get through the show itself. What it won't be, they said, was a mini version of "Lost."

"It needs to be interesting enough and well produced enough that people feel they're getting enough bang for their buck, even if it's free, the bang for their time," Lindelof said.

Lindelof said the negotiations for the talent took a long time, but they wanted to make sure that all of them were involved in the mobisodes.

"Nobody wanted to see two people sitting on a beach that we've never heard of talking and saying, 'Hey, did you hear what Jack and Kate did today?' You want to see Jack and Kate. It's taken us three years to get those deals in place," Lindelof said.

Cuse said that being a showrunner now is much different than it was 10 years ago. "You have to be more of a brand manager," he said. He said there are 37 ancillary parts to the "Lost" brand from T-shirts to mobile phone applications to a planned video game. It led to a discussion of several missteps, including the tie-in novel "Bad Twin" that Cuse said didn't meet their bar and the introduction of two previously unseen survivors, Nikki and Paulo.

The characters came out of "Lost" viewers' questions about why the show focused only on the same 12 characters and not the "socks," the unnamed survivors who provide the background around the camp. Cuse said "socks" comes from the term "sock puppets," which the writers call the extras.

"We're like, 'Trust us, you don't care about those guys,' " Lindelof joked.

They said they realized almost immediately that adding Nikki and Paulo was a mistake, even before the viewer outcry. Many of the scenes they shot would get cut on the editing room floor, not because of the actors but because they were concerned about how they fit into the story. Lindelof said that it was a lesson for the writers to stay true to the show's vision even if the viewers don't seem to like it.

"We buried them alive," Cuse said of Nikki and Paulo. "OK, you guys don't like Nikki and Paulo, there."

You know, there's a little part of myself that still wants to believe that 'Lost' will last for more than just three other seasons. I mean,I can't believe how hooked I am , that's the first series I've ever been that much into and yet it's heartbreaking to think that we're already half-way through. We're already talking about the issue of all the mysteries when more and more unsolved questions are piling up with each season passing by.I keep asking myelf questions about the flash-forward scenes of the season 3 finale , will they still be 'lost' on season 4 ? What about Michael and his son, was that the end of it for them on season 2 ? Buh, I can't accept the fact that I'll never see Dr Jack on tv again in three or four years.

So the Emmy nominations are in! And personally, I think they got robbed!!!! How the hell did Grey's Anatomy get a Best Drama Series nomination and Lost didn't?!? And I think Matthew Fox should have been nominated for the season finale episode. Here's the complete list of nominations for them:

  • Best Supporting Actor for a Drama Series: Terry O'Quinn
  • Best Supporting Actor for a Drama Series: Michael Emerson
  • Best Writing for a Drama Series: Episode "Through the Looking Glass"
  • Best Directing for a Drama Series: Episode "Through the Looking Glass"
  • Best Single-camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series: Epsiode "Through the Looking Glass"
  • Best Sound Editing For A Series: Episode: A Tale of Two Cities"

Actor Harold Perrineau to Rejoin Cast of 'Lost'

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Turncoat Michael is making a "Lost" comeback. Harold Perrineau, who plays the character last seen betraying his fellow crash survivors to save himself and his son, will return to the show next season.

ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPherson didn't offer any details Wednesday of what's in store for Michael. He also didn't say whether Walt, the son played by Malcolm David Kelley, will be seen again.

The pair fled the mysterious island where the crash victims were struggling to survive against the dangerous "Others," with desperate Michael turning over his friends in exchange for escape.

The network had planned to make the "Lost" announcement at Comic-Con International, the comic book and pop-culture show starting Thursday in San Diego. But McPherson, speaking to a meeting of the Television Critics Association, was pressed for the information.

McPherson initially balked at talking, instead joking about what the announcement might be.

"I've cast Don Imus on 'Lost'," McPherson quipped.

Earlier this year, ABC said will run for three more seasons, concluding in 2009-10. The series will return for its fourth season in January.

This thread is, well, non-existant! But I'm sur the hype will come back when the season starts up.

I ended up watching the 2nd season. I never watched the first, and I still haven't. I try to figure it out as I go along. So when's it starting up again?

Found some good articles. Don't know if they've been shared yet.

(BTW: New season starts up again in February 2008. We have a while to go.)

ABC GIVES VIEWERS 48 MORE ORIGINAL EPISODES OF THE HIT DRAMA "LOST,"
CULMINATING IN AN EXCITING SERIES CONCLUSION

Episodes Will Air Uninterrupted Over Three Seasons
Starting with the 2007-08 season, ABC will begin airing the 48 remaining original episodes of the hit drama "Lost," it was announced today by Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment. The episodes will air uninterrupted over three seasons (16 episodes each season), with the series concluding in 2009-10 with a highly anticipated and shocking finale.

"In considering the powerful storytelling of 'Lost,' we felt this was the only way to give it a proper creative conclusion," said McPherson. "I always said that we would allow the series to grow and give viewers the most compelling hour possible. And, due to the unique nature of the series, we knew it would require an end date to keep the integrity and strength of the show consistent throughout, and to give the audience the payoff they deserve. "

"Additionally," said McPherson, "having Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse signed on to complete the journey of this show was critical to me and the network. Damon and Carlton have tremendous talent, and we're thrilled that they'll be with the show throughout its run."

"This is a bold and unprecedented move for ABC," said Lindelof and Cuse, executive producers. "The show would not be what it is without the vision and support we've received from Steve McPherson, Mark Pedowitz and everyone at ABC and ABC TV Studios. We always envisioned 'Lost' as a show with a beginning, middle and end. By officially announcing exactly when that ending will be, the audience will now have the security of knowing that the story will play out as we've intended."

"Lost" premiered September 22, 2004 and soon became the most talked-about new show of the season, with a never-before-seen storyline that spawned water-cooler talk and blogs galore. In its premiere season "Lost" was the No. 1 scripted series on Wednesday night with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. On average "Lost" delivered the highest Adult 18-49 rating for any 8:00 p.m. drama on any network in seven years.

For the second season in a row, "Lost" stood as the No. 1 scripted TV program on Wednesday night during the season in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. It also ranked No.1 in its hour among Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 (tied w/Fox), regularly competing with Fox's "American Idol" results show during its first half-hour. Despite the "Idol" competition, "Lost" retained nearly all of its overall viewers from the same point the previous season, and actually grew 11% with Adults 18-49. The sophomore ABC drama was the No.1 scripted program on the evening among Adults 18-49 in all 22 of its original telecasts, and qualified as ABC's most-watched series in the time period in nine years.

"Lost" has ranked No. 1 in its time period with Adults 18-49 for the third season in a row, and is the No. 1 10:00 p.m. series on any network with Adults 18-49. It is the most recorded show on TV, gaining 18% more Total Viewers through "time-shifted" (TiVo/DVR) viewing. On average in its

10 o'clock time period, Nielsen reports 2.1 million additional viewers watch the show after its live broadcast. On top of Nielsen's reported numbers, millions more viewers watch "Lost" episodes through "place-shifted" viewing via streaming replays on ABC.com, iPod downloads and DVDs.

"Lost" has garnered numerous awards, including six Emmy Awards, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, a Producers Guild Award, an NAACP Image Award, a Prism Award and two ALMA Awards, just to name a few.

I think I'll try to get back into lost this season. I lost interest when Shannon died but managed to stick it through to the end of the 2nd season

Actually, Boone was my favourite character. I was literally heartbroken when he died.

Course, the fact that Ian Somerhalder was so hot didn't help either

:rofl: You couldn't be funnier, TGA! Karma.

There's no episode I love more than when the Korean people are talking and I tell my mom to translate to tell me if their Korean is right. She says it is but it's like talking to a little kid.

^That's interesting, I am curious to see thier parts.

I LOVE this show:heart: I missed the first season, so I rented the DVD and started watching the rest on TV.

Ben freaks me out. Every time I see him I get scared, his eyes are so piercing. He was definitely I great choice for that part. Charlie is my favourite, I was so sad when he died
