French fashion house and luxury retail company Louis Vuitton has unveiled a collaboration with Riot Games for the upcoming League of Legends World Championship, according to an article the developer published.

The partnership will see Louis Vuitton create a one-of-a-kind trophy travel case to hold the Summoner’s Cup, which will be awarded to the world champions in Paris, France on November 10th.

According to the announcement, the trophy travel case will “feature both traditional Louis Vuitton saviour-faire along with cutting edge, high-tech elements inspired by the League of Legends universe.”

In addition, Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director of Women’s collections, Nicolas Ghesquiere, has designed unique champion skins and a capsule collection. Other League of Legends digital assets have also been confirmed.

Naz Aletaha, Head of Global Esports Partnerships at Riot Games discussed the deal in an announcement: “We are honored to have Louis Vuitton as an official partner with designs to impact the look, feel, and prestige of our most prominent League of Legends event. This is a historic partnership that speaks to the impact Riot Games and League of Legends has had on the industry over the past nine esports seasons. We welcome the LV brand to our sport and we are eager to share the entire scope of the partnership in the months ahead, in particular on November 10 when the Summoner’s Cup is awarded in Paris.”

The League of Legends World Championship is set to kick off on October 2nd with the Play-In Stage and finish on November 10th with the Grand Finals. Berlin, Madrid and Paris will all play hosts to different stages of the tournament. The event will see 24 teams from 13 regional leagues go head-to-head to try and lift the Summoner’s Cup.

Michael Burke, Chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton also commented: “The League of Legends World Championship is not only the climax of the tournament: it’s where the world of sports and entertainment come together in celebration of new legends to be born. Louis Vuitton has long been associated with the world’s most coveted trophies, and here we are today, alongside the Summoner’s Cup. We are thrilled to be part of such an iconic event.”

This announcement marks Louis Vuitton’s first big step into the esports industry, however, the company has similarly-designed special trophy cases for sporting events like the FIFA World Cup and the Rugby World Cup.

Esports Insider says: When non-endemic brands enter the esports space it can often be executed really poorly. However, choosing to design a trophy case for the Summoner’s Cup follows a Louis Vuitton tradition and introduces something unique in esports. Very cool indeed.

I thought that this would be interesting to post and as a gamer myself, I find this to be very exciting if not also a bit random.

For those of you who don't know, League of Legends (often abbreviated as LoL) is a major online multiplayer game. I believe it is one of the most popular (if not the most) games in the world right now. It's also incredibly popular among millennials and has garnered a massive cult following.

While I think it is a bit random, this collaboration does makes sense with the final being held in Paris this year. Furthermore, it specifies that Nicolas will be designing a special set of champion skins (purchasable in-game content) and a capsule collection. I find this interesting because the majority of LoL players are male so you would think it would make more sense for Virgil to design this collaboration. I am aware that he is currently on hiatus due to health concerns so that may be a reason. However, does this also mean that the collection will be womens only? I'm very interested to see what this will look like and the price point. Nonetheless, I'm sure it will still be successful because the game is very popular in China and Korea.

Overall I think it's actually a very smart move and it's the first of this kind of collaboration (especially on such a large scale) that I can think of in the esports industry.

Nicolas seems to be one of the few designers who is genuinely a nerd lol. I don’t say that disparagingly, I play video games too. I recall him working with Final Fantasy and being inspired by Minecraft. He referenced Ghost in the Shell animated film a few times in his career. People think it’s childish to like those things but I think it’s cool to have a designer to relate to when it comes to those interests.

Nicolas is a nerd, his love for gaming, science fiction and things like that is highly documented.
Virgil is good at capturing what’s going on around himself...
But much more than that, I think that this also shows the influence of the younger Arnault boys who are much more in tune with that than maybe Delphine and Antoine...

It think it can be seen as desperate for some people but why not...
Another market to conquer!

That's very true but I just imagine that the 'hype' of Virgil would be much more appealing to the majority of the male dominated player base. I mean I'm sure more than half of them probably wouldn't even know who Nicolas is. Hopefully the collection will be unisex at least.

I also completely agree about LMVH investing in another new area and excuse my ignorance but I only just discovered last night that they had serious investments in the k-pop industry. The more you know!

TOTALLY. With a capital N. I love it. He's got a stormtrooper helmet sitting on the mantle of his fireplace in apt.

Trying to deflect from 'Made in America'? I don't think so!

I believe this was a project Nicolas and LV agreed to before Texas or Trump?

That's not really the point. Vuitton's public profile may not be in tatters right now, but it can do with something to deflect from their association with a presidency embroiled in an impeachment inquiry. This project may have gamers in a tizz, but some of us can see beyond the smoke and mirrors.

^^
But do you really think that it has an impact?
I mean people are still supporting Kanye West despite his statements and his constant support for Trump.

In a long term, everybody will « forget » about it. The LVMH/Trump « situation » is more business than anything.

I think people are somehow realistic. No matter what, he is still American’s President. How can you conduct this type of business without a government’s involvement?

LVxLoL: Collection exclusivement en ligne Collection pour LVXLOL | LOUIS VUITTON

The capsule collection has officially been released for pre-order and it looks like it will be online only.

I must say that I'm quite disappointed in this. An ugly camo print is all they could come up with? Besides the ugly print of the game character, you can barely tell that this is a collaboration. I understand that they probably want it to be sellable to a wider audience but this is just such lazy design.
