I think the Parisian thing so many reviews were talking about was due mainly to the fact that it was referencing Africa (and Asia, and the 20's, and the 40's for that matter) via Saint Laurent instead of directly. When you ignore the styling, the jewelry, the tribal motifs on the shoes, the obi-esque belts, what you're left with is actually pretty European looking; very sharp cropped jackets with strong shoulders, clashing colors, beadwork, mini skirts, volume, wide leg trousers and more than a hint of Josephine Baker. Even the hair, it could be inspired by Afros or it could be inspired by French poodles.
I think you kind of need to try and ignore the initial impact of it before you can see the Frenchness.
