Lupita Bosses Up in Balmain

With its exaggerated shoulders, prim starched collars, bland color palette, and boxy cut, the original ’80s “borrowed from the boys” power suit was designed for politicians, CEOs, and other professional women to deflect attention away from their femininity. But as Lupita Nyong’o, one of today’s biggest Hollywood power players, proved just last night, girl-bossing it up in 2016 certainly doesn’t necessitate buttoning up. As she breezed through the set of the Late Night With Seth Meyers talk show in a tomato red Balmain pantsuit, the voluminous hems of her micro-pleat trousers fluttering as she took her seat, the Academy Award winner easily did away with the stuffy stylings of the traditional dress code.

Eschewing the traditional white oxford shirt, the Eclipsed Broadway star instead layered a skin-baring bandeau top under her oversize blazer for a bold and confident look. Even her hair had a certain familiar edge, fashioned into an asymmetrical high-top fade that recalled another powerful female impresario, Grace Jones. Clearly, as she took her perch on the late-night talk show couch, Nyong’o was calling all the shots.

lol, yes - grace is the opposite of grounded. still, it's one of the things i like most about her.

lupita was great in that vogue interview.

She's really killing it lately, the tangerine Balmain outfit would look wrong on probably anybody else but she just shines and I'm not even bothered by the crop top, which I usually loathe, or the flare pleated pants. The oversize jacket was a really good idea, it gives structure and class to the outfit but she certainly is the one who makes the look work. Such a wondeful girl. I repeat myself but her smile and hair are really the cutest.

She looks absolutely incredible in the Instyle editorial. One of the best celebrity eds of the year for sure. The natural makeup really makes her beauty shines through. That portrait shot with the Prada earrings would've made such an outstanding cover.
