Marc Jacobs S/S 08 NYC

this collection is BEAUTIFUL, and the shoes, very imaginative!

:woot: I guess this means Marc won't be creating any more ugly "American" collections solely for Suzy's benefit  I consider that really great news :D ^_^

I don't think last fall's collection was phoned in at all ... I liked it a lot. I also noticed one of the giant malachite bracelets from that collection is about $2500--a downright bargain compared to the Lanvin $3K plastic bracelet ;)

The other piece of good news is, if you're like me & didn't like this collection, you can bet your next paycheck that next time out will be completely different & you probably *will* like that one :flower:

Do we have a "Burn in hell, Marc!" thread? Or better yet, it deserves its own site.

I'm appalled by the sheer vitriol being thrown at him. It didn't work out, 2 hrs were lost in the precious press' lives and now this? Don't tell me Ms. Menkes didn't go out of her way to not only write something horrible but to headline it.

At least he has GUTS.

When his critics are still figuring out what it all meant 6 months from now, he'll have moved on. Such is the world of fashion where most constantly yearn for things the way they were last season.

Of note, When CDG paid hommage to Westwood in the most flagrant way, did it provoke such slaughter?

People outside fashion really don't realize the rather unglamorous hard work and problems involved in getting everything delivered on time for a presentation.
This probably explains why NY is so bland and safe because there is not enough time to get anything other than a bolt of black or neutral delivered on time. I bet most collections are really pre-collections for the market and not really done for a presentation per se.

His work is particularly American, his second line is rock solid and saleable and NY will obviously be the worse for not having him. Sad.

I don't think it's vitriol, Bidwell, I think it's honesty.

At least Suzy Menkes and some of her fellow journalists have GUTS, too! :D If you admire that quality in MJ, shouldn't you also admire the same quality in them?

Would it be better for everyone to, insincerely, say 'Very well done, Marc!' every season, no matter what he's put on the runway and metaphorically pat him on the head?

Where would that get anybody (least of all him)? He'd just end up believing his own hype and then wondering why the sales figures didn't seem to match the reviews any more.

I'm absolutely sure Suzy Menkes was annoyed by his lateness and that may well have made her slightly more free with her criticism and less tactful than usual (although, she is known for her unsentimental reporting, anyway); but that openess may have, ultimately, done Marc a favour, IMO.

We all know that, for a NY designer, he has guts; he is constantly (and rightfully) praised for that. But having guts, whilst others don't, doesn't make you infallible.

I really don't think the critics of this collection (and it is criticism of the collection - not him personally, or his previous work, or potential) don't understand it and TBH, I think it is slightly patronising of you to keep suggesting that; especially your talk about 'common denominators'.

For goodness sake, he even used the term 'Emperor's New Clothes' himself! Admittedly, about the Charles Atlas filmed version, where the models only wore accessories and underwear; but the term was, obviously, praying on his mind!

I also don't think that journalists and most people on this forum constantly yearn for things as they were last season; unless they were immeasurably better and/or more relevant last season, of course. Believing that fashion is better when it evolves, is not yearning for last season, it is yearning for something other than the empty feeling one gets after another gluttoness, but ultimately unsatisfying, gorge on fast fashion.

I certainly doubt that, when Marc (the talented guy that he, undoubtedly, is) produces something far better next season, many will be yearning for this collection.

I actually think that it would be a very good idea for him to move to Paris. His last collection would not have been out of place there at all, IMO.

At the end of the day, I think what matters far more than where he shows, is that he is given the time he needs to produce his best work.

Oh please! As if he is THE conceptual artist of the world. Come on man. He's not satisfied for the negative press and came back at them with this lame excuse....

People outside fashion really don't realize the rather unglamorous hard work and problems involved in getting everything delivered on time for a presentation.

Don't just assume this please... it's just not nice.... And you don't have to be in fashion to have a super tight deadline.... or to organise a huge event... or to have to rely on others for your work to be done...

MJ has truly a lot on his plate but he is getting paid A LOT of money for that... and what he said about having to deliver many collections each season is just lame... if he can't do it, he shouldn't.... If he's willing to sacrifice the quality of his work to handle so many projects is his choice and he should be man enough to take the negative criticism when he deserves it...

Sorry if I offended anyone, that was never my intention. It just pulls into discussion a myriad of symptoms wrong with the system nowadays and I may have become overheated.
I will let it rest now.

Oh no, nobody is offended! We are just having a vigorous conversation!:flower:

this is all so funny...:p

bidwell...
i am surprised because i seem to usually agree with what you say...
but the Comme show you refer to was CALLED an homage...
the reference was not hidden and more to the point- it was
INTERPRETED in a VERY comme way...

marc - if he is any sort of artist- is a RIP OFF artist...
and he is finally being called on it...
it's one thing to copy patterns and designs from a vintage shop...
but to rip off existing designers/collections...
well- don't we have H&M for that?...
and isn't forever21 being SUED for it?

;)

*so now marc is admitting it...but why is he so angry?
if even he admits it's true...
should he expect to be praised for his complete lack of imagination or originality?...

like i said...
it's all very funny...

*BUT-the shows were DEF too early this season..
for everyone...
it was stupid really...
if anything..everything shoud have been pushed BACK ..not forward....

wow! this is really amazing! no one else could pull this stuff off but marc...

I never read many of fashion critics like Hilary and Suzy being this pissed off.I really do think that he did himself no favours by being two hours late. You do not present something this daring and bold and piss people off before they have seen it,hahah.

Anyway i disagree with it,loved this collection.

And we all know every fashion critic and its mother hated his Grunge collection for PL aswell, but it was pure genious.

Luving that Suzy!!! Never diagree with what she wrote!! As for MJ, think he is a little up his ar** at the moment. Would like to see all the fashion elite turning their back on him and see what happens.

i wouldnt say that... Jacobs is after all normal person, and as one he can be mistaken sometimes. Even john galliano has been wrong sometimes and valentino didnt always evolve with the right moods of each season. I am sure he will be able to fix this and give us something fresh and new next season... something that even Suzy MEnkes will love!

although i really hated this collection for being cheap, over-intellectualized and quite a bit messy, i really look foward for Louis Vuitton, which i am sure we will all love.

UGLY OR NOT, MARC HAS A 22 PAGES THREAD AND DE LA RENTA GOT LESS THAN 10... "dont listen what people say about you, just measure it in inches" by Andy Warhol

But if someone stole all your clothes and you had to dress from one of these collections, which would you choose ... I'm not really an Oscar girl, but from his runway I wouldn't have to go naked ...

WHAT? were the people on acid when they were designing this collection?? There must be a hidden meaning for this show?? Not what I expected from Marcie Marc at all! Looks like he's making fun of all my prom dresses (that I worked really hard on) with vintage Chanel. :)

I think he needs to go back to rehab, I can't imagine he was clear minded when he put this together. not a notch on his headboard he'll be proud of.

If Marc was to take his collections overseas, that would really be the end of NY Fashion week IMO, for the sheer fact that no other show drums up this kind of attention. There is always a buzz around it and he never fails to create some sort of reaction whether it is good or bad. True, the late starts get old season after season, however, we were warned ahead of time (KCD publicists told everyone that doors wouldn't open until 10 and to come back...not that that excuses tardiness). I sort of feel bad for Marc, as he tries to raise the bar, but people have such harsh words for him. I personally felt like Suzy Menkes' comments were a bit out of line...Whatever the case, I hope he decides to keep the show here in NY.

I agree, Marc Jacobs is THE show of ny fashionweek. I don't care what anyone says, sure Oscar De La Renta is beautiful and sure Michael Kors is money, but they do the same versions of their sellable formula season after season and while that is great for business (and in the end that is the bottom line) it doesn't generate much excitement. He's the only really directional top designer located in NY, w/o him all I have to look forward to is Proenza and Narciso.

^I really agree with that. Most of what Marc creates I love, and I respect him so much as a designer. However, some stuff was like, um, no. I wasn't that impressed.
