Martin Margiela - Designer

I've tried posting my own pics on here which I used my own diditial camera...but this website confuses me. I'm not sure why my pics never down-load, and it's not b/c my pics are too big??

Anyway...I have multiple pieces from the Doll's Wardrobe series. I own a similar coat to the one that is posted in the above pic...but mine is a heavier wool fabric, and it's pinstriped. Also...I own the twin-set cardigan and pull-over in the picture where there are manequins wearing the collection. I own a necklace from this same collection, too. It's a rubber baby-doll's hand that has been painted white, and it's placed on a black shoestring. I have a few undergarment pieces, too from The Doll's Wardrobe collection, too. I've been collecting Margiela pieces since 1989, so I do have a large collection of pieces ffrom almost EVERY season since 1989.

I also have an extremely thick and heavy cotton sweater...and the sweater came with a huge, plastic letter "U"...which I understand is supposed to stand for "University" because the sweater is a reproduction of a College University sweater. The label inside the sweater is also, GIGANTIC. I have a pair of dark classic jeans from this collection, too...but the details, such as the zipper-pull for the fly..the gold stitching, and the back pockets have been exxaggerated and deliberately oversized. I'm not in front of my clost at the moment...but, I can go through my Margiela pieces to see if I have anything else from this particular collection.

If someone could please guide me...as far as learning how to post personal pics on here...I'd love to show all of you some of my pieces!!:smile:

hello Fash-Off...you and I should definitely chat w/each other. We both seem to have a passion for Margiela...and we both share favorite past collections from Margiela. Most of my pieces are early/vintage...dating back to around 1989. I still love Margiela to this day, but I've sorta lost interest as-of-late. Around 2004 was when I was beginning to loose interest.

At first...I only read the last page of this post...until I started to look at previous pages, and saw there is a picture posted of some of the actual pieces I own in my personal collection. I own the heavy, striped sweater with the large letter "U" pin. I also own the huge, metal, military dog-tag necklace. I don't wear it often cuz it's kinda heavy and bulky...and I'm afriad I might scratch or dent the metal if I accidetally bump into something...or by mistake, knock someone out with it...hahahaha!!! I have other accessory pieces from other collections, too...such as a hair necklace and braided belt.

Trust me..I'm a huge Margiela fan (my username on here makes it kinda obvious??)...and we both could post some of our pics on here...but...I'm not sure how to download pics on here with my digital camera?? Take care...from Mike!!

The men's artisinal piece...the one that is a cut-off t-shirt with attached sleeves is a brilliant piece....and if the wearer wanted to, I think this piece can also be worn as a scarf!!!

I have a similar artisinal piece like the one that is comprised of 3 different shirts....but mine is constucted a bit differently. The one you posted looks like 3 different horizointal panels....mine is kinda the same concept, but the panels have been re-attached verticaly (up and down).

I have a few other artisianal 0/10 t-shirts....but they're mostly photographs that have been super-imposed on top of a t-shirt.

Like yourself..I collect both men's and women's pieces...either from the entirely white/blank label (women's first line)...10, which is the basic men's collection,...0/10 which is Artisinal mens, etc etc. I'm not very fond of Margiela's "6" collection...I do have a few pieces from 6...but I don't consider them to be "serious" or important Margiela pieces in my collection.

this is the doll wardrobe jacket on me. as you can see it is almost a normal blazer, except the sleeves are too short, the shoulders too narrow, and the bottom part is too wide compared to the fitted waist/midsection. also the buttons are oversized, and are not actually functional (the jacket closes with oversized metal snaps)

the weirdness of this collection is subtle, not overt. just various proportional details are slightly off.

I own this twin-set. I have both the large, snap-front cardigan...and the ribbed pull-over. The pieces on the manequin looks like a lavender color...the 2 pieces I own are off-white...and the pull-over I own has 3 large snaps on... the back

Hello Fashion-Fashoff...and thanks for your message you sent me. I'll try to use the help you provided me with, in oreder to post pics on here!!

Well..many years ago...I once worked at a designer boutique here in Boston...and we had the Margiela collection since 1989. My boss was a really cool guy...and on occasion, he would give me things (definitely NOT clothes...hahaha!!) but gifts such as some of the mailing information that the MMM would mail to the store. My boss gave me a large envelope from the MMM...and there is plenty of pics and info about one particular collection. Inside the envelope, there were even actual photographs. The pictures were taken by someone in the maison...and the pics are on glossy film paper. The picture is of a vintage dress with a flower decoration....but the picture of the dress has been super-imposed onto a plain dress, dome in the same reproduction. I think it must be from Margiela's "photo-print" collection.

I'll try to take as many pics as possible...and I'll try to post them here.

I also have a ton of pieces from Margiela's "Oversized" collection. I have a huge pair of pants that fold upon themselves in order to fit properly...a HUGE leather vest from the same collection...and also a vest done is a light-wool and satin version.

I remember the collection of the tin-foil slip-dress that you own..that was a really great collection. Many of the pieces from that particular collection had pieces that were meant to be folded upwards, and onto the shoulders. Long skirts were meat to be pulled up in order to make them shorter...the models were wearing painted-black RayBan-style sunglasses with the lenses popped-out of the frames and black eye makeup was circled around the model's eyes (like a raccoon animal..hahaha!!) I don't think I own any pieces from that collection...but it was certainly a great one!!!

Considering I'm a guy...I don't buy many margiela pieces that are womens. Mostly, I buy pieces that can be worn by either a guy, or a girl. Pieces that are less gender-specific...like sweaters, pants, jackets, t-shirts, vests, some accessories, etc etc. But, it depends on how gr8 the piece is...if I don't actually wear the piece..it's usually a piece that I think is amazing to just own, and collect.

Thanks Paul..and keep your eyes peeled on this post!!!

If this is true then it is a very big loss...

ny times

> INSIDER WIRE —There's been confusion a number of months about whether Martin Margiela has withdrawn from his brand, and even though Margiela execs assure he's still in place, after last week's collection, critics seem convinced he's not. As Cathy Horyn put it, "Just about everything at the show tonight — the hokey starlight projections on the ceiling, the empty design techniques, the use of beautiful young models instead of older, interesting-looking chicks — said that Mr. Margiela is no longer involved in his label, as editors have speculated for some time." WWD agreed: "Where in the world is Martin Margiela? Judging from the house’s fall collection, the designer has finally left the building." And Suzy Menkes implored a fix, fast: "Of Margiela's rigorous exploration of a personal vision, there is no sign and Renzo Rosso, chief executive of the 'Only the Brave' company that owns his Diesel empire, needs to do something fast." [NYT, WWD, IHT]

i wonder if a guy like m. margiela would go so far as to send out an intentionally "poorly" designed collection (i don't think it's poorly designed per se, it just uses a lot of familiar tropes and seems a little style over substance) in order to heighten the mystery and cloud people's minds even more about whether he is still there (hey there's even a cloud in the collection :ninja: ). is he really gone or just messing with us?

ok is this Margiela himself ?
that is funny that now, after ALL these years where the man has try to hide himself, that every journalists think he "has left the building" they show his face ... it just missed the "WANTED" on the photo ...

:ninja:
.....
ridiculous media system seriously !

that makes me think of Christian Leigh ...
who left NY artworld like a thief when he had shaked it during years ... and then there were a lot of rumors ... 'oh i've seen him', 'i've seen him here in venitia' ... etc. and he never appeared back ...
....
:ninja:

The picture above, in the previous post....is NOT....Martin Margiela.

I'm uncertain who the man is in the picture, bue he's definitely a bit too young to be Martin Margiela.

I know exactly what Martin Margiela looks like....and this is defefinitely NOT him!!

^and they use that picture of that same guy all the time! MMM is said to wear a hat quite often...a greek sailor's hat,if i am not mistaken. in fact i posted a shot of him from his exhibition in antwerp and he's holding his exhibit. book covering his face but you can see his hat! i think that guy is one of MMM's assistants meant to confuse people...ah his sense of humour.

Understandably, by my username on here, I'm a HUGE Martin Margiela fan. Although my name on here is MargielaMike2004....I joined The Fashion Spot in the year 2004...but I've been collecting Martin Margiela pieces since the beginning of his carreer in 1989, right around the time he stopped being the assistant designer to Jean Paul Gaultier.

I once worked for a very small private boutique here in Boston. We were one of the first boutiques who carried MM in the United States, back in 1989...including the years where there was no existing men's collection (10)..or, the label (6)..the jean's/basics collection.
Margiela started his men's collection in 1999, which was 10 years after his first women's presentation in 1989, hence the reason why the men's collection was called "10".

p.s. i am not believing anything till it happens! i think cathy horyn's piece is poorly perceived if you ask me,because i adored his new collection and i still saw a lot of mmm design techniques. and his team has been a major aspect in his collections....that's why he often involves them in the showings and such. irrelevant to me. and what's the big deal about the models? he's used young models before even when he was more under the radar.

^i think it is Martin, but it's obviously a very old picture...the same one can be found in the Antwerp 6 book.

I have also heard from the boutique staff here that he always wears a hat...and that he has very crazy red hair underneath. ^_^

As far as Martin Margiela, himself, walking away from the label he created...it comes as no surprise to me. It was something that I could predict would happen eventually, several years after Renzo Rosso, the founder of Diesel, invested his company into purchasing Staff International, the original manufacturer of Martin Margiela, and several other designer collections including ivienne Westwood (Red Label)...Bella Freud, Sophia Kokosalaki (forgive me if I spelled her name wrong) and a few other labels that escape my mind, at the moment.

^and bless...

yeah i dunno why he had to take on that partnership when they already had the manufacturing deal. if it does happen i don't know how loyal i would be after. maybe if he released another line under another name like 'artisanal' or something

that's what i've heard too laika!! curly!
