Matthieu Blazy - Designer, Creative Director of Chanel

Did Matthieu Blazy, known for his innovative designs at Bottega Veneta, recently become the Creative Director of Chanel?

To me the worst thing about him is that he doesn’t have a world… his clothes could be Daniel Lee, Phoebe Philo, Proenza or from any other brand doing Phoebe 2.0.

I’ve never agreed with this sentiment. In fact, he managed to create a whole universe—distinctive enough, yet warm and inviting. By focusing on craft and culture, there is now a solid structure behind Bottega Veneta. At the same time, warmth and a focus on craft are qualities I would never associate with Daniel Lee—nor, for that matter, any sense of humor. Not that it’s a bad thing per se, but still, the difference is there, and it was Blazy, not Lee, who managed to attract the old BV clientele back. And don't get me started on Blazy repeating Bottega Veneta at Chanel...

Lagerfeld in his 40s had done Patou, Fendi and was starting to be recognized for his Chloe.
I am confident that Matthieu will shake things up at Chanel, smoothly.
This change was needed, Chanel has been like a broken record for the last decade.

Right now that the “Cat” is out of the bag!! What I would like to really know will we finally have Chanel menswear under blazy? Will Jacob follow as an ambassador? Who will style the collections? (Better not be Mckimn)!! Who will photograph the campaigns?! Haha these are the important questions!!

Also another question!! (I'm full of questions today) lol If Virginie’s Chanel did well and it was mediocre won’t this be an easy gig for Blazy, he doesn’t really need to do much but sustain what’s already working.. If I’m thinking right this might go the way it went at Bottega… the momentum was there and he came in to sustain it and introduce a few new things along the way but the groundwork was already set… And this would be perfect for the execs who want to breath new life but continue with what already works with a designer who will offer little to no resistance and not shake the boat too much!!

Please no McKimm, please no Koller, please no Lotta, please no in-house styling.

And yes, who will be the photographer? Thankfully no Inez!!!

GZ Blazy then đź‘Ź, i don't really care about Chanel since i've always been more interested in menswear.
Chanel menswear is so cringe, a big No !!! Legendary men fashion house is Giorgio Armani for me, no matter how impactful Chanel is...

I’m so confused at this appointment, and I think a lot of these brands will realize they are shooting themselves in the foot by hiring old-Celine proteges. I don’t think that it’s necessary for a CD to be front facing, but he lacks personality imo. His designs have whimsy, in an overally intellectual and retrospective way, but lacks the coolness and humor I’m used to from Lagerfeld’s Chanel.

I really thought Hedi had it, but I think he’ll do wonders at Armani too.

Absolutely.
And while we are entertained with the ins and outs of the fashion world, he is all zen working on another masterful Armani Privé collection with the peace of mind and focus of a Japanese samourai.

he grew BV. during Blazy it became a hot brand.

He continued the trajectory it was on, but BV was very much a “hot brand” before Blazy joined and certainly before he became CD (his debut collection was F/W 2022) so I don’t know how much credit he deserves for that. He didn’t tank the brand, that’s for certain.
