What the hell is Agyness Deyn  still doing at no 5?
Higher spot than Anja, Caroline Trentini, Freja,
Mariacarla and Anna Jagodzinska?????

Move her out of the list!!!!
Makes no sense at all, don't recall her nabbing
any major campaign for spring.....

I mean, Mariacarla got the Givenchy as well as
Dolce Gabbana and she's that far behind?

Abbey Lee is up..........dunno how, but I love her, so don't care.
Karlie Kloss is up
Coco and Lara swamped 3 & 4 I think

id wish somebody from mdc would explain their ways of ranking the models.I still cant believe that magdalena is still ranked so low!

  • Lara vs Natasha for the New No 1 slot at MDC.
Raquel Zimmerman has ruled the No 1 spot at MDC for almost two years now, signaling that she is indeed that rare, rare paragon of longevity. Open US Vogue today and there she still is poised and inscrutable as ever...mystery and reputation perfectly intact. But the upcoming FW 09 campaign and editorial season seems to be telegraphing that a new wave of defining models are rising fast to own this moment. Two very different girls are sweeping in from opposite career directions to bid as the next girl destined for that No 1 slot . On the right, the immaculate Natasha Poly who has witnessed a career that started blue chip from day one, with bookings that have swept through all the classic landmarks of impending star status . On the left lurks that most unlikely of sensations, Ms Lara Stone, a girl who has managed to pull virtually every power client imaginable under her sway in the last two years ranging from a Vogue Italia cover to an All-Lara French Vogue issue, culminating in her current inclusion in the US Vogue club. Whose moment is it finally then? Both girls have their supporters and detractors...and this is the quick synopsis of the sentiments swirling around each girl.

ARGUMENTS FOR NATASHA
1. No model in recent times has had a more pristine booking trail. None. It is one that has never dipped, never seen an off season and Natasha has never failed to upgrade her client list. It started at Vogue Paris via the imagery of Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin gained recent sanction from the Meisel camp in US Vogue and has entailed repeat clients like Blumarine, Jil Sander and Gucci as well as brands such as CK Jeans, Balmain and Givenchy.
2. Runway history= FLAWLESS.
3. Given her consistency and utter professionalism chances are Natasha at No 1 will not be suspectible to sudden dips in her bookings. As a classic beauty presenting a perfect fashion frame chances are she stands to match the tradition of Raquel and Daria as true long distance runners.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST NATASHA
1. Where is that classic clincher...that makes a No 1 indisputable...that big money blue chip cosmetic brand contract that truly sets a girl in a whole different context? Does it bode well to wait for that to fall into place before pushing Ms Poly to that No 1 slot.
2. Natasha going to No 1 continues a tradition of a journeyman model with no public impact and no media heat rising to the top in the eyes of industry insiders but adding little excitement to the overall fashion industry.
3. In that vein, Natasha has had a lot of editorial presence recently but beyond the group US Vogue fold-out , little solo cover presence.

ARGUMENTS FOR LARA STONE.
1. Her ability to pull in and hold fashion's biggest punters in constant fascination is a sign of a star model. Carine Roitfeld's All Lara issue , Inez and Vinoodh's landmark editorials with her , the Givenchy,CK/Jeans and Calvin Klein Cosmetics bookings all converge to make Lara seem quite consistent and coveted.
2. Since July 2008 Lara Stone has had 7 covers (W July 2008 with Daria and Kate by Bruce Weber, V Magazine Sept 2008 with Inez and Vinoodh, The Journal with Juergen Teller, ID November 2008, Vogue Paris Feb 2009 with Inez and Vinoodh, Japanese Vogue April 2009, US Vogue May 2009 (group) .
3. Lara Stone the grown woman in a sea of teenagers with a woman's body and a woman's presence inadvertently has risen to be a kind of cultural force. She's sexy and gritty and real that promises to take the idea of modeling outside the limited confines the fashion industry even as she challenges and changes the ideal of what a model can be. Maybe that's the kind of ideal a bored fashion culture needs right now.

ARGUMENTS AGAINST LARA STONE
1. The campaign history, while respectable is not remarkable relative to even a Sasha (who seems to be resurging this season now that she's in the Chanel camp) .Every No One thus far has proven to be a repeat offender with multiple blue chip brands. Is Lara then more of a highly celebrated editorial sensation as opposed to a client-keeper.
2. Is there room left to rise in Lara Stone's career trajectory? Or is the current moment a peak that will see an inevitable fall? After the Calvin Klein Cosmetics visibility is there really room left for a cross-over to the Cover Girls/Maybellines/Estees for such a rock n roll figure as La Lara.? It may be argued that Natasha still has a very visible fragrance booking on her CV, proving her preferred status as a commercial commodity.
3. Lara's clear disenchantment with the runway circuit leads one to suspect that being in fashion is not life or death to her. But do you survive this business without that desire to be the best at your trade?
And then as an addendum comes that sight of Sasha seeming to re-ignite after the inevitable slow Post-Prada season. Will the FW 09 bookings reflect a three way race. I'd be very happy to hear your thoughts.

IMO Sasha should be No.1 before Lara does, Sasha does well in both campaigns and editorials, while Lara is less popular with the campaign clients...

Though the 3rd point against Natasha is totally unfair. Since July 2008 Natasha has had two Japanese Vogue covers (Sept 2008, June 2009), two Russian Vogue covers (July 2008, March 2009), one V cover, one ID cover (November 2008), one The Last Magazine cover (#2), one W Korea cover (May 2009), all of them solo. If you add the group shot in Vogue US, it makes 9. Which is actually MORE than Lara's cover count.

In fact, the 3rd point against Natasha should be that she's having less editorial exposure, but I think that's just because she's being more selective. Almost all her recent editorials are also cover gigs.

I guess Wayne just isn't familiar with Natasha's work.

^You make a good point about the covers.

Whyyy do they have an anti-sasha bias?!

I remember it used to be Raquel vs Sasha for #1. They said Sasha had to prove she could last after Prada.

Since Prada she has done Tiffany's, GAP, Zara, Biotherm Cosmetics, continued her Armani cosmetic campaigns, John Galliano, Longchamp with Kate Moss, Chanel Cruise and Resort campaigns plus closed and opened many Chanel shows. I can't even remember all her campaigns there are so many and they are all extremely lucrative!

Right now she is on the cover of Italian VOGUE - when was Raquel last on the cover of Italian VOGUE with an only girl editorial to boot???

Does Raquel have 2 MAJOR cosmetic contract at this moment? Is she fronting campaigns for the largest fashion retail stores (Gap and Zara)?

Does Raquel inspire people with her personality? Are magazines around the world constantly writing features about her beauty and talent?

Sasha does the highest of the high fashion AND the most desireable commercial work.

#1 Natasha, #2 Sasha, #3 Lara I would say. Why doesn't Raquel stay?

sethii I think Raquel works more than Sasha editorial-wise maybe not as exclusive as Sasha but more. She's often in Vogue Paris, Vogue US, Self Service and so on. There's a lot about Raquel in magazines. I think Sasha comes really really close and she definitely proved that she can live without Prada which we actually knew before because she always opened or closed prestige fashion shows. Why not making them all #1 since many positions are shared by two models.

So well said :flower: I love Raquel though but I seriously cant understand why it would be LARA vs Natasha , imo Sasha is MUCH MORE DESERVING. :p

Raquel has done stuff for Balenciaga, Chanel, Chloé, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Dolce & Gabbana, Dsquared2, Escada, Fendi, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Hermés, Hugo Boss, Jean Paul Gaultier, Lanvin, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Max Mara, Oscar de la Renta, Prada, Roberto Cavalli, TSE, Valentino, Versace, Yves Saint Laurent.

To name the biggest most of them more seasons, some of them just accessoires but I think that's worth mentinong.

Lots of beauty campaigns and at least three fragrance contracts with Gucci, Versace & Fendi. She has been on the top for years so I really think she is deserving.

Sasha: Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Longchamp, Prada, Pringle of Scotland, Tiffany & Co to name the biggest.

I like Sasha too and she has a huge satus but she doesn't really compete with Raquel campaign-wise and those campaigns are the most important right? Raquel has always done beauty stuff too.

Raquel is too old for the regular ranking. Sasha started in AW05 - when did Raquel start? SS91? Sasha has ALWAYS been at the very top for her entire career. What about Raquel? Has she been front and centre on US VOGUE like Sasha? Has she been on UK VOGUE? Russian VOGUE? Chinese VOGUE?

^That makes more sense you could argue that Raquel had and needed a lot more time to gain the status Raquel and Sasha have.

Yes Raquel was on the US Vogue cover not front but twice, Russian Vogue in October 2008 and Chinese Vogue in September 2008. Just for the record. Raquel has had three Vogue Italia covers (so Sasha beats her with three only girl covers and another one) and she doesn't have a Vogue Paris cover...

To be precise, Raquel went to modelling school in 1995 - 10 years before Sasha walks her first runway. She has had much more time to build her career and develop this huge list of campaigns.

Sasha has also branched out and used her modelling success to get jobs such as magazine editor (Fashion Week Daily Russia), and have exhibitions or her art in Paris and New York. This kind of thing is going to increase her visibility as an 'iconic' model. Raquel seems to treat modelling like a regular job rather than living and breathing it.

Should we also consider that Raquel has a near perfect body? Sasha didn't have that in her favour but she still made it and opens / closes haute couture shows.

Change for the sake of Change

I think the justification for outing Raquel is weak--I hope that Wayne/MDC provides a better explanation in the near future. It seems like they are changing the number 1 for the sake of change.

Do we all really think Raquel isn't going to do well in the next campaign season? We know she is back at Gucci, among other campaigns. She gets an awful lot of runway work despite her insane runway fee during this recession. And we still see her do significant editorial work. Are Lara and Natasha doing better than she is? Questionable. And I think that the number 1 spot should be changed when there is with out a doubt better girl. And clearly there are doubts.

Then again, maybe Raquel will not do well next season. The MDC crew always knows things we don't.

But while we are voting I say Sasha too!

I don't even think Raquel is a full two years older than Sasha. And if Raquel is too old for the list, then Lara is too. There are plenty of girls on the list Raquel's age.

As for the new number one, I'd probably give it to Anna J or Toni Garrn. They've been dominant and have proven they are here for the long haul.

^^^^
too early IMO. They've done 2 decent seasons but will people get sick of them?
And Sasha and Nat SHOULD be #1 before they are.
