Antonio Banderas, Melanie Griffith buy art at Chile charity auction

2007-12-12 17:46:35 -

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) - Antonio Banderas and wife Melanie Griffith paid U$50,000 (¤35,000) for two works by Spanish artists Joan Miro and Salvador Dali at a charity event, an auction official said Wednesday.
«They bought the two works for a price much higher than their commercial value because the proceedings of the auction went to UNICEF,» Denise Ratinoff, head of the auction house, told The Associated Press by telephone.
«It was virtually a donation to UNICEF,» she added. «And it helped a lot, because their presence in the auction made many other people also pay steeply for what they purchased.
Ratinoff said the etchings purchased by the couple were «San Lazaro et Ses Amis» by Miro and «Rosy Horse» by Dali.
The U.S. actress and her Spanish actor husband came to Chile as part of an tour to promote a cologne sponsored by the actor. Their activities includes a luncheon with President Michelle Bachelet, with whom «we talked about politics, movies, life,» according to Banderas.

“ZORRO” ARRIVES IN SANTIAGO

Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, best known for roles in “Zorro” and “Desperado,” arrived Sunday with his wife Melanie Griffith on a private plane from Brazil. This visit marks the superstar’s first-ever appearance in Santiago.

The actor moved up his arrival date due to a packed schedule that will see him participating in conferences, promotions and autograph signings during his three-day stay in the capital.

“I am very excited to finally be here,” he said. Sources claim he has a planned meeting Tuesday morning with President Michelle Bachelet at the presidential palace, La Moneda.

After arriving his first order of business was to give a press conference at the Hyatt Hotel where he and Griffith are staying.

Hours later he took part in perhaps the most important activity of his trip: a charity event at the offices of UNICEF which presented an early stimulation manual — called Time to Grow — to mothers in the program Bridge of Chilean Solidarity. At the office he met with Chile’s UNICEF ambassadors, Benjamín Vicuña and Iván Zamorano.

On Monday night he also participated in the hit Chilean show “Locos por el Baile,” where he was interviewed by host Sergio Lagos.

On Tuesday Banderas will participate in a gala dinner at the Grand Hyatt where he will promote his new cologne — Blue Seduction — which is a primary reason for his visit. After the banquet he will preside over a charity auction. He and his wife will then depart Wednesday for Buenos Aires.

Exclusive, Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith in Chile: "More than friends, we are lovers"

Melanie Griffith: "A great sex is the key to being together so long"

"I just like how the family is living the life of Antonio, and I like to laugh and how to have the passion and sense family. This is not the case in the United States. The American families do not have much of that. "
