MET Costume Institute Gala 2023 : Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

I visited the exhibit yesterday, I thought it was well done. The crowd I was with yesterday evening seemed to really enjoy it as well, the notice to “step away from the art” was constantly playing because people kept going too close to the dresses, to see the details.:rofllaughing:

The pieces from Fendi and Chloe were the most interesting to look at, IMO.

I waited to make a review but tbh, I was quite disappointed by the exhibition…
I think for someone who has contributed so much to fashion and culture, it was at the caliber of the Exhibitions held at the Alaia space in Paris (which are more intimate and more in the sense of essay).

‘For a first major exhibition (The one in Bonn doesn’t count frankly) in such a important place, a chronological exhibition would have been more fitting.

Part of the appeal of Karl is his longevity and while I think the exhibition highlight the timeless quality of his work, you want more.

Karl is maybe the only designer in fashion who was very comfortable in every aspect of the industry. You never felt through his work that he sacrificed his creativity or vision for commercialism for example, because he embraced commercialism. He loved playing with shapes sometimes in the most horrendous way but the sense of design was important.

Really the great thing about the exhibition for me was seeing the Chloe and Fendi pieces. Obviously because they are very full of ideas but also because it’s the most underrated part of his work.

‘The selection Andrew did from Chanel was disappointing because I think it’s good to have pieces that have visual impact in that kind of exhibition. I miss the feather dress from SS2011 for example, he was very much inspired by Art beyond the 18th Century, I miss accessories, I miss a sense of grandeur really…

For someone who was part of Pop Culture, who designed collections based on pop culture, you want to see Pop culture also on the exhibition…

I really loved the recreation of his desk, the inclusion of the premieres d’Ateliers but u didn’t get the room with the phones.

‘I think Le Grand Palais should have a KL exhibition for their re-opening and have either Pamela Goblin or Olivier Saillard involved.

It was good going to the MET for Karl but it could have been different and therefore…better.
