MET Costume Institute Gala 2021 : In America: A Lexicon of Fashion (Part 1 of 2)

What is Shacarri wearing??

YouTube needs to get smacked for inviting the most random of people to the MET. I love Jackie Aina, but why.

What’s this trend where girls rock auntie haircuts down the MET stairs? Joan has the same exact cut. It looks horrible on everyone.

Rosalía in a giant Rick Owens mantilla is just divine but I wish her hair was done up with one of those martian peinetas Rick did for S/S 2011.

Natalia Bryant in Conner Ives is a disaster, that dress only looks good on the mannequin!

Isabelle Huppert looks so uncomfortable, that dress is just tragic...wish she had gone in a different color-way of the orange semi-fitted suit with a huge hat from the Couture.

Pierpaolo did everything he could but Carey Mulligan still looks hopelessly bland...

Hunter in Prada is cute even though the make-up looks like Björk's discarded prosthetics.

I know we say this every year, but what an underwhelming guest list. Barely any A-list musicians or actors.

I disagree, to me it was an endless parade of some of the most relevant people. I mean, it's true that there were many people I'm only vaguely familiar with, but the guest list was extensive and ran the gamut. You've got the American cultural icons, you've got the most famous of the social media stars, you've got the current chart-toppers in the music industry, big name designers and the upstarts, lots of A-list actresses, etc.

Dixie D’amelio is there with Valentino.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a pop culture junkie and I know pretty much everyone who attended. Everyone is in the moment and relevant, that cannot be disputed. But I can’t help but miss the Rihannas and the Beyoncés, that calibre of celebrities.

Paloma looks GREAT!!!!

Aw, Adut’s look is quite underwhelming…

Did the Olsens skip this year? Must be the first time in years. Also surprised at no SJP. I do think a lot of the old regular fixtures such as those and also Kirsten Dunst, Beyonce, Liv Tyler have probably grown a bit tired. It has become a bit of a circus which started around the time Kim K. was invited.

Lil Nas took a photo with Lil Uzi, Jack Harlow & Rihanna at the MET, yet all three have NO paparazzi photos whatsoever…?

*UPDATE: It was Erykah Badu & I’m slow. Where’s the other two, though?

Relevant or not doesn’t make them any less stupid, tacky, low class, tasteless or ugly.

Well, those are broad strokes to describe everyone from Debbie Harry to Tom Ford to Sha'Carri Richardson. It's the costume institute, it isn't about being the most tasteful. They're there to party and be seen, have fun and make a statement. In fact, if someone dresses tastefully it's universally written off as boring (Hailey Bieber, for example). Stupid? Perhaps some of them, but most of these people are at the very top of their respective fields, many of them very much self-made. You don't get to their level without talent and smarts. Ugly? Well that's a matter of personal taste but I'd say some attendees are among the most beautiful people I've seen. Personally, I find the relentless negativity a bit stupid, tacky, low class, tasteless, and ugly.

Yeah, I remember when I'd watch this as a teen, and you'd see pictures of like Bill Gates, Nicole Kidman and Queen Rania having a conversation. Just these once in a lifetime combinations of people that aren't just show business relevant but in society, who have this monumental legacy, power or work behind them, in their own field. Obviously one shouldn't just expect this to be this mega elitist event but it's still primarily a fundraiser, for a highly prestigious and serious institution, not really the MTV movie awards or even the Cannes Film Festival.. you want people to talk about it, but I'm sure the goal remains on funds and the exhibition.

I do think they'd benefit far more by keeping it more exclusive, with more legends and less youtubers and tiktok stars involved.. there's no need to dumb everything down just to keep people interested..

Kim's look btw: just giving the public what they want.. to not see her.

I kind of like Kim K's look tbh lol. Also Troye Sivan looks kunt. And I thought Sienna Miller looked GORG.

(Rihanna is only going to the afterpary)

what even is the theme? it's so rando.

this event should be more focused imo. i loved the CDG or punk ones - even though in the latter a lot showed up off theme - because at least they were focussed. i don't get what this is supposed to be.

"america lexicon" is a bit broad.

Rihanna settled. Miss Hassan.

Anyway lol, looking forward to her arrival. Forgot to add Imaan Hammam is another favorite. I guess that if the choice is barbie vs trampy this year, I will always opt for the latter.
