Nylon August 2008 : Mischa Barton by Taki Bibelas

I got my issue in the mail today.

Doesn't seem like a bad issue, but I've only flipped through it.

Mischa is so overrated! And totally talentless!

This was seriously one of the worst articles I have ever seen. The writing in particular was beyond awful and Mischa comes across as snotty and ungrateful, some examples:

"She's tall, looks like she actually eats, and her famously low voice is just as Eartha Kitt as it's always been."

(Huh?? Mischa sounds nothing like Eartha and her voice has all the sex appeal of a rock. What a bizarre comparison.)

About being arrested: "Like, it was one of those things that I never thought would happen to me, and I was disappointed because it associated me with a group of girls that I would rather not be associated with. That was the biggest bummer for me -- I didn't leave my house."

"...I've done a lot to pay back for what I did (speaking about driving without a license, driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of narcotics). I ask what she means by pay back, expecting an answer about friends and family and regaining trust. Instead she looks at me and says, "Just like stuff you have to do to please the courts."

(Needless to say, the remorse here is overwhelming.)

"I was thinking about that, you know (about doing projects where she plays a highschool character). I was the youngest on The O.C. They were all like 26, 27, playing 16 and 17 and I was 17. So now that I'm 22, I don't want to be doing that forever."

(Obviously, being the youngest on the O.C. was due to her overwhelming acting abilities. Nice of her to backhand her former co-stars from the O.C. at the same time.)

It goes on for pages with her talking about how she always does "really dark roles" (uh, like in T.A.T.U?) and desperately making herself sound serious and not a teenager. Yet she comes across as self-absorbed and thoughtless as one. Maybe, she's not such a good actress after all if she can't even pull that off, huh?

WOW she didnt even try to sound smart, damn at least go for it, and the journalist didnt bother to make her look better since i guess there was no hope ,lol, for some magazines try and pack their cover subject as this very smart worthy person, i love that Nylon didnt go down that road.

This is the cover shoot where Mischa threw a tantrum on the set and rumors flew out (in retaliation???) that they had a hard time photoshopping her cellulite. Well, this should be interesting: at last, Nylon is writing articles that don't read like they are written by a publicist. Something to look forward too...

it's probably as irrelevant as her career is now but I still remember she had a reputation for giving rather snotty interviews.. I didn't buy into those rumours until I stumbled upon US Elle April 2005..

highlight from the interview..

... Barton's thoughts on such reactions are psychologically astute, if perhaps emotionally less than generous: “I think they're just surprised I'm their age and they could in any way relate to me. Anybody who feels any kind of insecurity in themselves may be surprised that somebody their age would look like this.”
When I ask what kind of fan mail she receives, Barton says, “It's fascinating the stories you'll get.” For example? In a weary, singsong voice, she says, “Like, 'I was in the war and my leg got cut off and I'm in the hospital. I'll never walk again, but all I can do is lie in bed and watch your TV show.' It's just—stuff you get.” She shrugs and takes another bite of swordfish. I ask if that letter came from a soldier in Iraq, and she says, “I don't remember. But that one was big on the list of, like, heart-wrenching stories. Are you joking? The O.C.? Surely there are more important things in life than my stupid show. But, like, okay, if you feel that way. I'm like, that's”—she chuckles and rolls her eyes—“nice.” A couple of hours later we're at the nightclub the Troubadour, where a middle-aged blond enthusiastically chats up Barton. At the end of the evening, I ask what the woman said. “She knew an actress who had a small part in one episode. She said she was this person's next-door neighbor, and isn't she a great actress. And I said, 'Yes, yes,' to be polite. That's the thing about Hollywood,” Barton says, shifting on her three-inch heels and pulling up the right shoulder of her black minidress, which has been falling down all night. “Everybody knows someone. Or at least someone's sister's best friend's husband. Sweet, but painful.”
The first few times Barton spoke this way about people who admire her, I was surprised. I've never encountered an actress who said this kind of thing out loud, on the record. And while it would be wrong to let Barton's casual condescension go unmentioned, it would also be wrong to dwell on it.

The cover is great - I still have good hope, as I always have, that Mischa will become the great actress she could be. She may have had some really bad luck - first playing Marisa - a role that was very out of character for her, but doing it so well everybody still thinks she's that character - and then leaping onto the movies when they're essentially officially dead.

Well, well, meanwhile she's a great model, and perhaps one of her indie endeavours will turn out ok. Though I doubt it, again it seems nobody can forget her humorous role as Marisa

The interview - I love it - it's great to see she's honest and no Cali s**k-up As that silly interviewer in the Elle interview you posted - MF - "ohhhh I can't let this go unmentioned (read: because Mischa didn't s**k up to me, invite me to fifteen parties and rub me all over in saccharine) but it's unhealthy to dwell on it...."

Like the 15 year olds who read this and connected with her role as Marisa would not remember this forever and draw strange conclusions from it?

The thing about Mischa is that she just speaks her mind - she doesn't care if it comes out weird. Must be a real smorgosbord for journalists used to talking to self-conscious pros all day long.

I like it but Mischa has absolutely nothing going on. I guess it's just the IT GIRL factor...

That Elle interview is legendary at this point, people ripped her for that for like months. She really hasn't changed though...

^About the last one, that's a pretty sour thing to infer about your coworkers. It's like she was saying she was doing something normal but the others were slumming it, stuck in teenage roles. Like, 'Ew, I wouldn't be caught dead doing that at their age! '

The OC cast did kind of evaporate...except Rachel Bilson who made the transition to the big screen successfully. I know Mish turned down the role in Gossip Girl because she didn't want to keep playing high school, in hindsight it was probably a good idea but she really hasn't done anything substantial.

She does have certain qualities that make would make her a great star, but she has that rep for not being able to act.

Well, perhaps she heard from them how annoying it was to keep playing teens? And then think she should learn from that and do something different.

I think she should take television roles instead, the internet killed the movie star anyway Even many of the more talented directors are ditching the big screen for the small one...

Anyway, I'll be getting this one for the cover alone...love her pose, the straw, hat and denim....

It's not being associated with Hilton and Lohan. Her biggest "bummer" was that? How about possibly killing innocent people while you were out driving drunk and high? How about ruining the trust you had with your family and friends? How about having a criminal record? All she could think about was being lumped in with party girls, and "like stuff" she only did so the judge would get off her back? Why would she need to tell a lot of lies about being repentant? She should be anyway! She needs a huge serving of some humble pie.

Like cestmagique says, the last bit is blatant age-ism and also a very negative comment about her co-stars abilities and careers.

Rude, thoughtless comments and I sure would be offended if I read/heard someone I knew saying things like this. It reflects very badly on her.

^I really think she just doesn't want to share personal feelings with the mags. Honestly, it could be a cultural thing...she's from Britain after all, people are far less sell-out and keep their feelings to themselves there.

Her mistake is to say anything...she should just be evasive.

It's strange that I'm saying this, but I actually like the cover. At least it's more decent than Scarlett's cover. It's much better than the past few months. However, the editorial shots... sub par.
