Nevertheless, the first thing I thought of when I saw the article was that the manager or whoever is of power in Hermes (which I pronounce Herr-mees) should quickly give Oprah the chance of going inside the store and letting her get everything she wants - for free. Eh?

I think Oprah would clean out the store if she could...

It can be the only thing that can save them though.

But nevertheless I think there are customers (patrons) who won't care about this scandal and continue buying.

Man. What's up with Oprah always having to do with racism in fashion?

It's sad that some people feel as if non-whites can not afford nice things.

it's usually expected one should be well turned out when shopping- i use to fal into this trap until i came to the realisation that who cares what the sales assistants thinks of me- minimum wage cannot buy you an attitude(!) i now have a total indifference to SA's.
i've often been into hermes looking a right scruff and have never had any trouble

the worst employess work at prada...period!

I know some Prada employees that are very sweet while others are extremely arrogant.

thats so mean on poor oprah .. :flower: if only they realise who she was and that she has big bucks she could spen din there there loss. Also how did they know she was north african, she could have been carribean or african amercian like she is.
I know its not the same but i get stuff like this because of my age, and thats abd enough but because of race .... isnt there some kind of law against that. I realy am so shocked !!

well nobody actually said it WAS to do with her race.......

Indirectly they kind of did because their reason for not letting her in was because they were having problems with north africans. They saw her skin color and assumed she was north african I suppose.

Although this doesn't make much sense to me since North Africans aren't black! 99% of them are Arab-Berber.

Anyhow, I  Oprah and am going to boycot Hermes if this turns out to be true. :D

nothing makes sense about this story if u ask me, north africans aren t black so these people are not only racist but also ignorant

Well maybe they never took a geography class.

Although you are very right, one must be pretty iggnorant to think that all the people in Africa are black.

Sorry acid, they said that they did not allow her entry because of problems they have been having with Northern Africans, and some other nonsense about her hair not being done.

WHATEVER...
IN all points they were wrong. They were stereotyping her.

oops i didnt see that part..... :flower:
well we dont know what the problems were......it could have been anything from attitude, violence, shoplifting/ attempted shoplifting, fraudulent purchases etc

it is not acceptable to stereopype one race of course

"because they have been 'having a problem with North Africans' lately'"

What the hell is that supposed to mean? That's just rude. I mean it's OPRAH! How can they not let her in?

you know I really believe that the employees doesn't know who she was

I think it is obvious that they didn't know who she was. If they did they would have let her in. They didn't let her in because she was black and didn't look too good.

They're still wrong for doing so. Even if she wasn't Oprah and just some other black woman they should still let her in. You can keep people out of stores based on race, that is literally the definition of racism and it is morally wrong.

Shops do not invite you to come in, you do so at your own will.
Maybe stores should put up signs at the entrance "No Black's, Hispanic's, Asian's allowed to enter"

:o Can you imagine that? That would be horrible... I'm half Asian so I would have to ask "Can I put one foot through the door?"

Ohhh .. I'm dying to know what Oprah is going to do ... and then Hermes comeback!!!

*salivates*
*salivates*
*dehydrates from salivating too much*
*gets electric shocks from salivating on top of the keyboard*

This just reminds me .. what was that line from "Pretty woman"?:
'Mistake, BIG mistake'

Ha, ha, ha!

I walked in a Sony store today dressed in my usual attire (worn in denim shorts, black hoodie and dirty shoes) and was pretty much ignored.... It s*** because I wanted to buy a digital camera..... They don't know what they're missing for snobbing non preppy dressed customers.....

Goes on to show even in 2005 image still is EVERYTHING..... :yuk:

I have a lot of respect for Oprah and I am sure she handled the situation pretty well...... Don't expect her to walk into that store anytime soon....

French Diss: Oprah Reportedly Gets The Boot In Paris

Newspaper Column Says Winfrey Denied Entry To Hermes

UPDATED: 6:51 am EDT June 21, 2005

CHICAGO -- There are published reports that talk show queen Oprah Winfrey was denied entry into an exclusive Paris boutique.

A source told the New York Post's Page Six column that Winfrey was denied entry into Hermes in Paris. The source said, "when she tried the door, they refused her entry because they have been having trouble with North Africans."

On the Magnificent Mile in Chicago, where Winfrey's daytime talk show is based, several people offered their opinions to television station WMAQ.

"I'm not welcomed -- it feels like -- in the stores," said Meesha Pike. "I have to have my husband with me just ... if I'm going to shop for a Chanel bag or something. The women don't talk to me until I am ready to make the purchase."

"I think it is terribly discriminatory," said Pike's husband, Robert. "I don't know what kind of problems they've had, but to single out someone because of the way they look, Oprah Winfrey or not, I think it is kind of ridiculous."

"She's not well known in Paris," said Sia Gotsis. "She is well known in America."

One man who was strolling along Chicago's Oak Street said he has a friend who works at Hermes -- and said the Post has the story wrong.

"What I heard is they had a party at Hermes and she somehow was able to get in, but they told her she had to go out because this store was not open," said Goran Mikic.

Mikic added that once the workers at Hermes realized who Winfrey was, she was invited back inside.

WMAQ was unable to reach anyone at Hermes to confirm either account, nor was the station able to reach anyone with Winfrey's office.
