Oprah refused entry at hermes store

not sure this is quite on topic but i think it relates...although it sounds like she was denied because of her race (which is deplorable) i think perhaps it was also because-it states she didnt have her hair done-so maybe she didnt "look" like she had money..that may have contributed to it. but thats such an ignorant attitude. store owners and employees need to realize that, especially in this day and age, what you look like has nothing to do with how much money you have. i dont dress up to go shopping-last time i went downtown SF to shop i was in jeans and a t shirt and flip flops...but when i went into Dior i must say i was helped as if i'd walked in carrying a croc birkin wearing a diamond encrusted watch. it honestly was kind of cool-they didnt make assumptions about me because of how i looked..consequently they got a sale. i remember the opposite happening at Burberry once..i'd gone in looking to buy a bag, but after the SA's attitude towards me of being totally uninterested-as if she assumed i was just "there to look", i decided to take my jeans wearing *** (and my money) elsewhere

my main point-anyone should be allowed to enter, look around, and shop. and they all should be treated with respect, no matter what race they are, what country theyre from, or if they have their hair done or not.

Im mixed about choosing who to let in and who not to let in. I think they're stating thier exclusivity, you can't look like or be the riff-raff cause you're not getting in. But at the same time the person should have had some sense and should have been like "its Oprah, we're not gonna win"

I think they're stating that you have to look like a Hermes woman in order to get in, I guess that's why Britney, Mary Kate, and Lindsay dont have Birkins.

Who the hell is Hermes to dictate who can and cannot come into the store...I wouldn't be surprised if Oprah turned this into a topic on her show....and if Hermes sent her a free Birkin bag...although she would probably send it back to prove a point...You go girl!

I see what you're saying but their excuse was that they had a previous problem with North Africans. It kind of shows that they basically didn't let her in because she was black.

I've seen some very homely/poor looking people let into the Hermes in paris many times.

it s very known that in France, they re very racist when it comes to shopping in high end stores so i'm not surprised at all. before they would tell people they can t come in, now they re trying to be less ''so obviously racist'' but they re still picky about who can and who can t shop in their stores. not to say that ALL high end stores are like Hermes but most of them are especially in France. and I witnessed it happen in different stores to different people. It s a shame if u ask me, and if i were Oprah i d give them really bad rep. Shame shame shame on Hermes

A VERY wealth, VERY powerful, VERY influntial, black woman. Who happens to be VERY proud of her heritage.

I know for sure it is not uncommon to see Europeans wear informal clothes when going to these stores. (Not trying to make a generalization, but most Europeans with money look like any middle class person.)
Me and my dad have gone to Hermes (Zurich) on several occassions in baseball caps and jeans to buy ties and belts. I did notice the staff was a bit snobbish with us though. They had that "I doubt you can afford this" look.
I am surprised that this happened to Oprah, and if it happened to Oprah it could happen to anyone. Very sad how some employees judge people by their appearance when I doubt they could even afford some of the items in their own store.
