this is a tv/advert thing rather than a real model contest, much like the 'next top model' franchise everywhere else. the women here all look like Maxim rejects clinging to their last attempt at fame or something. pretty hideous. but makes for good drama i bet.
real contests are held by agencies or businesses, and most of the time winners just want $ as a reward. there are contests probably every week somewhere in china.
scouting is nonexistent and contests are currently the only way to become a model in China. even those who win often go nowhere (afterall it's decisions by a few old fogeys) and they are 99% of the time not good - i see more potential in those who dont win. so, you end up with models who really want to be there, instead of seasoned eyes of photographers/stylists/designers wanting them to be there.
example of a typical contest in a local city in 2004 - any of them can be a DuJuan or HanJin - but are any of them models today? nope.
