this is a tv/advert thing rather than a real model contest, much like the 'next top model' franchise everywhere else. the women here all look like Maxim rejects clinging to their last attempt at fame or something. pretty hideous. but makes for good drama i bet.

real contests are held by agencies or businesses, and most of the time winners just want $ as a reward. there are contests probably every week somewhere in china.

scouting is nonexistent and contests are currently the only way to become a model in China. even those who win often go nowhere (afterall it's decisions by a few old fogeys) and they are 99% of the time not good - i see more potential in those who dont win. so, you end up with models who really want to be there, instead of seasoned eyes of photographers/stylists/designers wanting them to be there.


example of a typical contest in a local city in 2004 - any of them can be a DuJuan or HanJin - but are any of them models today? nope.

The finale aired yesterday, and Yin Ge emerged as the winner! She gets a contract with Next USA and Pantene. Here she is:

some interesting notes about this cycle:

- the host was chinese model Li Ai

- Tanya is originally from Belarus

- Qian is originally from Australia

- Tanya, Qian and Diana spoke english in the show

- the winner Angela didn't get the prize's she deserved because she had past modelling experience which is against the rules

- Vivian and Icy also had past modelling experience


- China's Next Top Model had a banned photoshoot:

the second photoshoot was actually an S&M themed one but the shoot was banned from T.V so they had to take the photoshoot from week 4 (mock magazine covers) and moved it forward to the week 2 (this explains why Sarah doesn't have a photo that week cause she was eliminated by then) only Michele, Icy and Angela's photos for this week were leaked on the internet (i can't find Angela's)


- Wendy quit in week 2 because she was pregnant (this explains why she also doesn't have a photo in photoshoot 2 along with Sarah cause Wendy was eliminated by then)

- though she was shown quiting, Icy's reasons were never revealed (she just rights a goodbye letter and leaves)

- during the Pantene Comercial and photoshoot, Qian had to do her comercial in english because she can't read chinese and had difficulty with the script

- through out the competition the girls were given blogs on the website and blogged through out the weeks


- the competition originally started out with 12 girls and not 10:

even though they were put in the opening, Kou Li and Chen Qiao Ling were double eliminated before they entered the house so they were taking out the opening, not given blogs and weren't even given profiles on the website


- this cycle had 2 openings:

one with Kou Li and Chen Qiao Ling in it plus pre-show photo's of the girls


one where Kou Li and Chen Qiao Ling were taken out and the pre-show pictures were replaced by shots of the 10 girls



- the cycle was sponsored by Pantene and was called "Pantene China's Next Top Model" not actually "China's Next Top Model"

cycle 2 was a good cycle for me the models were decent, the drama was great and the shoots were fantastic (apart from the first one that one sucked!) the girls names were:

P.S love that they had a girl called Hu Lu Lu such a cool name i wanna call her Hulahoop
