Belt loops Vs No belt loops
Tweed Vs stretchy material
Fishtail Vs no tail

All of the above and...

Hidden zipper, on the side or the back
No flairing at the hemline
Solid color
Relatively heavy fabric
Full lining and fitted
One hidden pocket for a little money and a key

Skirt lengths that are just below, at or above the knee so people of various heights and leg shapes have options. I'm thin and kind of short, so I wear all three lengths dependent on the style of shoes I wear. Also, I prefer a high waist on pencil skirts, to elongate my body. Here are examples I like.

Fits snugly around the hips and derriere and follows a smooth line down your legs , I dislike ones that don't follow the line of your leg down to your knees but I think that is mostly because of my shape not a design fault.

I absolutely HATE stretchy pencil skirts the ones they peddle for office wear.

I have a beautiful black pencil skirt which hits just above the knee, with a back split and a high rise ... I'm not a connoisseur but it seems perfect!

What do you think pencil skirts should be worn with? I'm having trouble creating outfits that work for everyday life (heels are beautiful but sometimes a bit ott), looking pulled together without seeming too dressy. Also, should the top be tucked into the skirt or pulled over it?

No side slits ever again please!

Has to have a high waist, stretchy, no belt loops either.

With a shirt tucked in, I dont think you can go wrong.

high waist, overlapping back slit, tapered to the knee, great seaming, NO stretch, NO loops/pockets/buttons = perfect

love pencil skirts, but am very very picky about them.

the tweed celine that diamond star posted is pretty much perfection to me...

^picky, picky, picky! how are you to ever find one form all that snootiness?

i don't really understand what's snooty about knowing what you like. sweet_n_simple asked, so i answered... :innocent:

Does anyone know where I could find a satin short pencil skirt? I saw it from an episode in sex and the city when Carrie wore it. It was beautiful!

I like high waisted with a back slit and definitely no belt loops!
As for the fabric, I prefer it has a little weight to it, since the pencil skirt is more of a structured piece. I like it to the knee or a little higher, I really can't pull of the longer ones.

i love a good pencil skirt! they are just so in line with Tom Ford's vision of women that is just so strong! But they have to be in a good fabric in order to work well - a nice satin one is perfection

I've been on the lookout for a dark denim pencil skirt to wear to work, but no luck yet.

My criteria will be:
No pockets, because they tend to not lay flat.
Just enough stretch to conform to the shape I want and make me appear curvier (I have narrow hips, and not much of a waist).
Maybe a back slit? Depends on how high it is. If it's all the way up THERE so that it would give a little peek, then no thanks.

try a good denim retailer like replay or seven. they should have some. or maybe reiss. The criteria are pretty easy to accomodate although you may have trouble finding one without pockets but they are out there im sure. good luck

I love a great pencil skirt but it's so difficult for me to find one that fits perfectly well! I have this gorgeous pencil skirt dress from the 1940's that fits really well, I'm thinking about reconstructing the top to make it more wearable.

Pencil skirts can look amazing.

I've noticed there are a million and one pencil skirts for fall ... not sure if I'll be buying any though ... what about you? :flower:

i want a tube skirt actually...

you know....
like a pencil skirt..
but longer and skinny and knit...
