I don't know too much about celeb style and would prefer we trailed off it too. If anyone wants to start another topic, I'd be just as eager to read :D

i am not familiar, but it would seem to warrant it's own discussion and thread..

i bet if you explain that well, then you would get a lot of responses and a really interesting discussion...

i don't agree that $ makes individuality/personality/style/etc, it's in HOW you wear it.
of course, it helps too if nobody steels it and make it mainstream.. then you look like everybody else even though you liked it before a gigantic brand showed it as the it look...

But if you think about it, that's even a reason why people prefer dropping big bucks on items that can't replicate the 'how' something is worn. The less people who can afford it, the less chance it'll be stolen down to a T.

I don't think $ is the sole factor in individualtiy/style etc , but to completely rule it out as a contributing factor at all to consumer purchases ... I'm not sure I could agree with that given that i've come across people who do buy for the $ to make a look. Even I've succumb to a price tag for an item, completely aware that it's how you wear an item over the item itself.
 
oh, dear! i've never heard that before.. i do believe that it could look better if you have extra $, but it doesn't mean you need it, moreover, if the price is the sole reson you are inclined to buy it, then style is not what we are discussing.. even though perception defines whether you like someone's style or not, i've never look at someone who's style i liked and went "yes, that is expensive, she/he looks good". at any rate, i'm more drawn to those little things that aren't in the clothes themselves and seem irrelevant but really make a difference. all i can think of for an example is the way a ribbon might be placed, and how it changes the look.
 
I am wearing black for the first time.Black kind of billowy top with beige jeans.RIP Lee.I didn't have to go anywhere yesterday so I didn't bother wearing it.
 
snow and ice really limit my personal style options...:(

^I apologise. The reason why I was using celebrities so much was because it makes explaining easier. I guess my main question was, why do people who dress similarly not only in terms of clothings, but also accesories, hairstyles, makeup, etc. with similar body shapes have such different styles.

Because if personal style is personal expression, then i feel that knowing why the above happens can help me express myself better.

I think what you're talking about is the nature of personal style ... which might be a good thread. I think the questions you're asking are really interesting--unfortunately I don't pay that much attention to celebrities' style, so I can't really participate in the discussion. I understand why they're germane, though ... because you don't know my friends and I don't know yours, but we all could know what celebrities' personal style is--if that is we were paying attention ;) :innocent:

I suspect, though, that personality plays a considerably bigger role in personal style than we're used to giving it credit for, and that is probably the answer to your question.

In your defense if you were to switch their wardrobes I wouldn't be able to differentiate who would own what piece. Additionally, I would also not be able to tell which one was wearing other person's style if you had thrown them in a garment worn by someone with different styles as them.

Sorry, just back from CNY.

I think you just got what I meant! If I were to dump their clothes into a pile, I wouldn't know what belongs to who. And if I were to see what they wear, they tend to go for the same lines and shapes. But when I look at them, even without the media hype, they have different styles to me!

celest put it a lot better than I did. To steal her words, the one to many is what you create for yourself. i.e what you choose to wear, how you style yourself etc. whereas the many to one is what the public perceives of you. i.e what style they think you have.

for example, 2 people can wear similar items in an attempt to portray a similar style. that is one to many. they are trying to create something about themselves that they will show others. but people might see them differently, with one being perceived as stylish but the other perceived as trying too hard. that is many to one.

of course we can say that different people will then have different ideas of what an individual's style is, but when many arrive at the same conclusion, then there should be some other thing that i missed.

1) media influence. Because many people says it is so i think it is. but this doesn't answer the question, how does the media arrive at that decision in the first place? wouldn't there need a sizeable(or at least a group) no. of people for the ball the start rolling?(or else wouldn't it be one of those the critics says it's good but every one I know doesn't think so kind of thing?)

2) there really is something else that is contributing to how people(many) perceive an individual's (one) style.

my interest is if it's (2) then what is that extra something.
if it's not (2) then what are the other reasons that cause the difference?

the only thing is that the term hipster really hadn't been coined yet, so no one used that term...
but it's still the same thing...

maybe if alexa chung actually DOES something other than look cute...then we will all think of her as something other than a hipster...

you mean features wise or style wise?

I really do think A.C and S.C have roughly the same features. I mean, sure I probably wouldn't mistake one for the other, but they have similar bone structure and S.C's facial features are slightly bigger, but they kinda look the same(looks wise) to me.

S.C style now is different what she wore back then. A lot more punk, grunge, and I guess what you would call hipster(if there was such a word back then). But her style is different now and I'm comparing her current style to A.C's current style.

If SC style remains the same but she hasn't directed any movies, would we think differently of her style? I mean sure, she would definitely NOT be "indie director extraordinaire"(I was just quoting, not her no.1 fan or even her no.2 fan or anything like that) but I think her current style is still not hipster style. (casual, laid back, subtle has been used I believe).

(got chased off workplace, will continue on monday when I'm back. Home internet connection sucks)

i'm waiting for it to come back...

I got one from asos a few months ago... very long, can be worn as a dress too, or as long as you want it... i don't know if they still have it... not the greatest quality, but pretty good for its price...

.....most shops are now focusing on spring collections which makes your quest even more difficult...

how do you plan on wearing it? ;)

last year my mom knitted me skirt like that, it was gorgeus but my cat totally ruined it when she was just kitten :(
...maybe someone could knit you skirt like that??
because it could be pretty hard to find that from stores at the moment, as they have spring collection now. maybe some vintage / thrift store.
 
i'm feeling there is a lot of knit invasion coming soon, because i find myself craving for knits for a while now... maybe i'm wrong, but i'd start moving, soft...:unsure::lol:

I am looking for a long length black wool coat with frayed edges with slightly short sleeves.

It's the perfect yet elusive item that has been on my mind for so long.
