Personal Style

Hmm I was thinking about my 'personal style' today on the bus...and how my views have changed so much in the last year that it's completely unpredictable as to what I'll be wearing next year etc etc. Personal style to me is about expressing myself, pushing my emotions through my clothes (I'm having a VERY black phase at the moment, not because of sadness or what most would related to black, but just because I'm feeling a bit dark at the moment, I think tim burton movies and the 'neo gothic' thing has a lot to do with it) I'm whisked up in a storm of black ^_^
I'm adamant not to fall into the indie trap at the moment, it bores me rigid but there's just so much of it around that some might just creep into my wardrobe

i thought we could move the party over here...
in an effort to keep 'what are you wearing today' on topic...

what does personal style mean to you?...
does it mean lots of designer labels...
does it mean everything matches...
does it mean following trends...

SPEAK YOUR MIND!!!...
this is the place to do it!!!...

mine:
personal style to me is a way to express myself giving certain occasions. I work at a finance firm so the dress code is quite conservative there. I try to add a little twist to my outfits or use pieces of designer clothes to highlight the outfits.
what does personal style mean to you?...
it means the outfit on me looks "mine" and it makes me look pretty/elegant/sharp/cool......however I feel on a certain day.
Occasionally, if I really like certain pieces, I don't mind wearing that piece with the danger of "the clothes wearing me" because what I want is to show that piece of clothes...not me
does it mean lots of designer labels...
Absolutely not. But if I can afford those things by spending my own money, why not? Just "No logo" please~
At the same time, designer labels save my time to search for quality products and they are good elements to work from. I am working my way up, and I passed the stage of wearing disposable clothes (in fact, when I was younger, I was too busy to consider my style. Style was not in consideration when I only had 4-6 hrs of sleep for school:ninja: ) I also found that I no longer waste my clothes after I started buying designer clothes. Every single piece is fully used. I consider my purchase carefully and I don't buy a lot of pieces. I like quality, not quantity.
does it mean everything matches...
No, no, no. I hate being matchy matchy (no red shoes+red bag combo:yuk: ). A short cut is to wear lots of blacks because you are never too matchy
does it mean following trends...
Yes and no. I don't want to look like a person coming from a different era or a different "place". At the same time, not all the trends work on me, so I pick one or two. For instance, I look like a toy soldier with military coats on, while cinching the waist makes me look great. the YSL silhouette works well on me, and it might follow me for the years to come.

This thread is inspired by people who seem to think having a designer bag means they have style, no matter how poorly they dress. I've attached some examples (pics credited to jjb). The bag in the second picture is even supposedly fake, by the way.

So...what is it that you think makes you stylish? Do you rely on a single accessory like a bag, pair of shoes, or sunglasses? Is your stylish look a result of a well-put-together outfit? Are you stylish because of your antistyle ways? Is it about the brands you wear? Discuss...

I think it's many strong pieces accumulated over time that are brought together in one cohesive ensemble. That makes me stylish. Stylish isn't just a bag, stylish isn't a pair of Louboutin's. ANYONE can get Louboutin's. It's a gorgeous bag, the Louboutins and a Cartier Tank worked seamlessly and easily into a casual or formal wardrobe. And ensemble is style, a bag (shoe, t-shirt) is not.

Also it doesn't hurt to have a couple millions in the bank, though money seems to work against Paris and Nicky.

being stylish means looking consistently good.
What I mean is, you may not always have a remarkably great outfit on, but whatever you wear out of the house, you would be comfortable having your picture taken in it.
If you don't feel like combing your hair- or putting on any makeup- or wearing pants- Please! Just Stay Home!!!
I do this- I don't understand why celebrities-(Who are much more likely to be photographed than I am)- don't.
Being stylish means no matter what you're wearing- to look like you've tried. Not nescessarily tried too hard- But at least tried!
Being stylish means- however you look- you intend to look that way, and you weren't just too lazy to put on something else.
Wearing something designer can be stylish, but only if you put some thought into the rest of the outfit.
And wearing a head to toe designer runway look is not stylish, because that's just lazy- letting someone else dress you.

Being stylish is being able to take something and make it look like it was made specifically for you. When I think stylish I think of the ability to take clothes and shoes and bags and accessories and turn them into a look. Someone who is stylish can be standing in a room filled with people wearing the exact same thing as themselves and still be able to stand out.....

Does that make any sense?

lots of great thoughts on this..

I guess in my opinion it'd be the ability to wear clothes, and not have the clothes wear you. To be stylish is to have a distinct grace, look, feel in your clothes, while you're still being yourself. Some of the most stylish women I've seen don't necessarily wear the "it" item, but carry themselves and put together outfits that just seem like "them." The girls in the photos, and on the streets, dont' really seems to dress to appeal to themselves...it seems like they're dressing for some sort of stamp of "chic" that they hope their bags grant them. It's sooo silly. Especially when i see people wearing hideous sweats and stuff i'd mow the lawn with, and they carry around a Louis Vuitton bag like it's their whole outfit.

For me, I do not wear long pants EVER (my legs are too short and it drags me down) so I wear sweats all the time. I'm in high school though so it works. I still can look stylish though-it's just a matter of having something that makes you pop. One of the principals at my school seems to compliment me every time I wear something semi-stylish-for example:
vintage silver-threaded black cardigan that my mom made (in the 70's!)
striped socks with marabou trim
cropped gauchos with lacy tights underneath and stiletto heels

It's about being able to do simple things to make an ordinary outfit seem...extraordinary.

i agree with most of your deep thoughts but i basically see fashion as a way of fun.

clothes can make you feel like a rock star, can caught your attention when you see them in other people, can make you get out of a really depressive mood even. i paint my eyes real black and put on my most r n´r clothes when i am feeling miserable and it does help:smile:!

of course fashion is not a joke but even if a "serious" thing, i always like to enjoy the fun of it. well... i dont usually like ppl who take things (and themselves) too seriously...

what does personal style mean to you?... a style you feel absolutely yours. personally it's a chic mix of other styles and my imagination..
does it mean lots of designer labels... of course not, why would? there is nothing designer on me
does it mean everything matches... both everything and nothing matches look "trying too hard" to me. but i like interesting, sometimes surprising ideas. as usually, truth is somewhere between..
does it mean following trends... i can't say i don't follow trends, but not exactly as it goes to spotlight, from the various trends i pick the details i like and show in a different setting.

Good thread, Alex. It's interesting to see people's different perspectives on that "it" that makes someone stylish or outstanding in a sea of people. For me, it's personality and swagger that makes someone stylish...the clothes could be on point but if there isn't that sense of comfort within one's own skin as well as the clothes blending into the person's whole aura into one unified body, no amount of expensive clothing is gonna work. As cliche as it sounds, you gotta wear the clothes, you can't let them wear you.

for me being stylish sometimes dosent mean individual garments.. its the fact that i dont care what people think of how i look.. if i like it then i will carry it well. I mean i wouldnt buy something really creative and cower away in it incase people dissparove of it. ^_^

it's definitely wearing the clothes instead of vice versa. But for me it's also the colours (black, gray, navy, white), the cut and only buying the items you absolutely love.

To me being stylish has to do with the confidence level you have, the ability to dress in a way that works for you, your body, etc. being able to establish your wardrobe so that it has individuality and not just a closet full of trendy items. Have knowledge about fabrics, designers, clothing lines, and seasons. Knowing how little or how much to pay for a particular item. And most of all...being stylish is sticking to you! Expressing yourself and feeling good about who you are and what you wear!

Good topic!
I think being stylish is about representing yourself - your self, your essence, your personality - and at the same time respecting your proportions, dressing for your body type...

A good outfit may wear a person if they don't feel comfortable in it, right? I feel the same happens when you don't put enough of yourself into how you pick your clothes.
