Pierpaolo Piccioli - Designer

How is MGC an improvement over PPP as far as bags and accessories go.

Dior keeps recycling Galliano era bags.
I haven't followed Dior in ages, so I actually had to look to see if this was the case. It turns out that other than that awful Book Tote, she depends heavily on reissuing/remodelling old models:
- We have the reissue of Galliano's Saddle bag
- The D-Joy, Toujours, Caro and Miss Dior are all heavily based on the Lady (quilting and "DIOR" charms)
- The Bobby and 30 Montaigne are relatively smaller lines, so I'm guessing they weren't as successful

The truth is that she (or Dior while she was at the helm) made the Lady Dior really popular… before her, it was considered as a very old-fashioned bag and it was very hard to sell. She made all the canvas versions, she removed the zipper in some, did the soft version… I think she had a good eye for accessories tbh. The J’adior shoe was a mega success also from the very beginning.

I hate MGC as much as the next person, but money wise her tenure was a miracle and it was thanks to the accessories.

I haven't really had any strong feelings towards any of his post-covid stuff, so I can't say I have any now. It does pique my interest, though, in terms of fashion's current CD revolving door. Will he retire? Who are they poaching to replace him? If MGC (wtf), then who will go to Dior? If Michele, what will that mean for the Valentino vocabulary? Etc, etc. So many moving parts in the industry right now!

Poor girl

Seriously?! And they could've easily cut those 3-5 seconds out, but no. The most disturbing part is that it's the "most replayed" part of the video. Also that finale walk was a mess. The first two models just stormed ahead leaving a huge gap in the line.

I'm an American so think about this. If you're in America in a major city and you are a young woman or a young man or an older one whatever and you pay rent, you are paying between $1,500 to $5,000 a month on rent now they are trying to seduce you to buy a pocketbook for $5,000 the dream is lost in the economy it doesn't make sense for anyone to try to purchase something at that price range. And these brands cannot survive off of the super rich alone they need the bottom to prop them up the bottom customers who buy one or two items a year one bag a year lipstick perfumes are what keeps these houses profitable. I believe one of the biggest selling brands of this year will be Sheen and pretty little things which is not fashion at all or is it?
I think the big problem today is that people feel like they are entitled to luxury.
I love to think that people are rational and won’t spend 5000$ or whatever currency for a piece that doesn’t fit their lifestyle or that will hurt their pockets. At best, if they love a piece, they can save or wait for sales or for the time it goes on outlets (Valentino RTW is like Outlet goals almost).
But from a business POV, a lot of those brands have entry-level priced items. You can buy a Valentino dress at a fraction of a price of a Chanel jacket. You can buy a Stella McCartney jacket at a fraction of the price of a Valentino dress.

And because people feels like they are entitled to luxury, they would rather spend money on a bag that scream « I have money » than a bag from a brand or designer they loves.
I may love some of those brands but from a everyday POV, I carry either my Loewe, my Tom Ford’s Jennifer or my Pierre Hardy bag.

I have decided to not buy a new Chanel classic years ago when it went above the 6K mark.

Price increases are shocking but I can’t never be mad about it. Some people gets really mad about those. The same way people are willing to « play the Hermes game » in order to be offered the opportunity to purchase the product they really want.

Quite spot on, especially when it comes to those people feeling "entitled to luxury" and how they spend their bucks into items meaning "got money" rather choosing something with their eyes and hearts because they do love the brand, designer or this very item's look (yes, it happens that I found some lovely ones from brands I don't relate to usually).

Having always been on a budget, well, most of my adult life to say the least, I can't remember when was the last time I bought some designer clothes... Like 15 years ago and was some second-hand Rick Owens jacket. So, yeah, most of my wardrobe is cheap or second-hand, it does look cheap taken item by item but once the outfit is well-put-together, makes some little magic sometimes. But obviously most people don't care about this aspect any longer (well, it has always existed but seems it have taken bigger proportions lately)... Maybe one day they'll wake up and realize imagination is the only real luxury?!

Can't say I'll really miss "PPP". But it's always a pleasure to see Valentino Garavani every now and then. I probably wouldn't have worn most of his own collections back then but his shows were a delight to watch!

It's silly to accuse people of feeling "entitled to luxury" without examining why they feel that way... hmmmMmmm... what could have caused that feeling of entitlement (but I think it's more keeping up with the Joneses/appearances, than "entitlement"). Or, in other words, of course people feel "entitled" to something they're constantly told they deserve.

I don't think it's that "silly" but you're right while explaining where it comes from. Though, I have troubles to find them excuses. Why does it work on some people and not others? It's like with cheap rumors (why are some people more into spreading them?) or dubious politics (why some tend to believe what the ugliest politicians keep shoving down their throats while others won't even care to listen a single word unless it's meant to prove how wrong those are?). And you'll find this kind of things in almost every field, in several aspects of today's life. Sometimes it's rather harmless but in other situations, it can lead to the worst. We all know about this, at least a little. But you're very right, it's not that important when a large bunch of yay-sayers want to let us now about their alleged wealth by wearing stuff they don't really care about at the end of the day.

Socioeconomic background, and susceptibility to varying levels of sophistication in propaganda. If you're deep in ignorance/lack of education/poverty, it's very easy to convince you that the lack of jobs in your community, your low salary, limited or no access to healthcare, you name it, it's all the fault of 'foreign presence', aliens that came to take it all away from you. That's why you go after this specific group, gather them and nurture their sense of helplessness if you want them to vote for you. The strategy is a bit harder if you go up the ladder, to the middle class, where the blaming starts to fade because that would mean accepting defeat and nothing works better than presenting them with the horror of being any poorer, while simultaneously recognising the 'progress' that came from their brilliant, one-of-a-kind mind that left the less smart/poor behind and if only they continue on this right track, they can single-handedly create the conditions of the rich, and be rich. The middle class is full of people truly convinced that they ARE rich, that they are in a separate category than the rest for a variety of factors, sometimes just being that they know luxury, through objects of luxury, therefore they are familiar with wealth.

I agree with @blueorchid, I'm not sure it's so much entitlement as an awareness of social status and the possibility of climbing up that pyramid. Enter the insane marketing of these luxury brands, the way they study consumers, often identifying weak points (political tension, class/race dynamics) that make people 'relate' right away, and it would take a lot of resistance to remain immune, and not at least a little bit enticed.

The poor/middle classes have always been drawn to loud expressions of luxury and wealth (look at Versace in the 90s, or say, Burberry among chavs, or the typical attire of cartel members/football players/rappers) but that also grew exponentially because fashion's become so wildly corporate that there is no demographic they're too good for. If you have a wallet, you're good enough for LVMH and Kering, so can we blame consumers for engaging?
