Prada Group acquires Versace for €1.25 billion

COMPLETELY agree. a very grandesque flashy goodbye for Donatella via a campaign / show / activation (imo) would have brought soooo much revenue from Donatella fans that we all are !! a miscalculation from the suits in my opinion.
I don't understand why she has so much fans ... and factually she has not, otherwise Versace would have performed better.

POP CULTURE

fans are their foremost for the entertainment for her (pop) persona and the nostalgia/her story relating to her brother and the brand but this not fans of the house persse as thats style or taste related.

why KL also a pop icon can do H&M as his persona is entertainment and a bit his cosplaying into his style per example with the H&M collection evne his own brand...

Anna Wintor has also this pop notoriety because of the movie and met gala and how she appears and stories being told of her does not mean vogue does better because of that either.

being famous does not means sales perse

I think you bring up a very interesting point that I personally have not thought about before, it’s food for thought.
an example pops up in my head-Nadège Vanhée-Cybulski of Hermes, who doesn’t have a cult following per se and yet as we know, the sales are astronomical. Only fashion insiders might have an interest in her persona, otherwise everyone wants a Birkin or some pieces from rtw. You get my point.
Donatella is a great supporter of LGBTQ community, she is friends with everyone who we deem an icon in the pop culture - from Naomi to Lady Gaga to Dula Peepa, and even visually speaking Donatella doesn’t and never did look like the majority of creative directors nowadays - Phoebe, Miuccia, Meiers etc etc are well combed and don’t steal attention with their looks per se, yet Donatella is over the top, typical Italian bella Donna.
She carved a universe for herself and kudos to her for that! She is MOTHER!!
Having said all of the above I truly believe that having a huge fan base and admiration of many is not directly related to sales ( unfortunately!).

I doubt Prada or anyone else will be able to turn a house around that specialises in pure pastiche. Obviously I’m not as well informed as the experts here, and the only thing I know about Gianni was that he was shot dead. This thread made me want to google some of his older work and yeah…how many p*rnstar dresses and pimp shirts can you sell? Maybe this perception is ignorant, but believe me when I say the average consumer thinks Versace is nothing but Barocco prints and other wear-it-once BDSM costumes. Clearly the Capri CEO thought so as well. Is there a subtle difference between Gucci, D&G, Plein and Versace? Yes. Can their target buyer explain it? No.

Spring 2000 - 2001, fall 2002 and Spring 2009 would like to have a word with you…
SS2012 and I would even say FW2013. Even my favorite collection, SS2007 was sexy.

Prada can definitely be sexy indeed. And I would say that Prada is at it best when it is sexy….Because it’s not the obvious. It’s a sexy rooted in the codes of bourgeoisie from northern Italy.

^ Oh forgot FW 2013, which happens to be bit of a personal fave as it is a more film noir/vampy kind of sexy. I considered SS2012, but I still find it very kitschy and dare I say I tad twee. Perhaps the pastels, the shoes (as "iconic" as they are) and the "bloomer"-ness of some garments do that for me. Fabulous pleats in there, the sexiest part I find about the collection.
