Racial Diversity In Modeling

I wish Sessilee all the best and hope she continues to have much success. Keep knocking down those barriers! When I was a kid in the eighties you didn't see very many black models, so I'm happy that although change is slow, my children will be able to see beauties like Sessilee and know like there is someone out there like them.

Hi, where are you and your daughter from originally apart from the us if anywhere? and yes she is so so beautiful

Racism is racism, at the end of the day it is not a matter of taste that is the most ludicrous thing ive heard, that taste is informed by racist values that many people in the world may not even think consciously but they still are.
Im not surprised one bit about the castings, the models all look the same there white, eastern european, blonde boring boring boring . Im not surprised many black models get the most work in NYC.

Thank you guys, you too honeyisle.

Our family consider ourselves African-American. Sessilee was born in Philadelphia, PA, USA. Sessilee's look comes from a variety of ethnicities in our family heritage.

Although we are African-American, our family heritage is very multi-cultural. My side of the family is extremely diverse, including my grandmother who was Dominican and my grandfather who was Caucasian (from France); my other side of the family is African-American and Native American (Cherokee Nation).

Confused yet?

Sessilee's father side of the family is African-American and Portuguese.

Not confusing in the slightest, i asked because i was sure she looked similar to allot of people in my family and we have a very similar heritage, when people ask me theyre always confused!

You know what irks me..tokenism , Jourdan Dunn at Prada such a prime example however it raises the issue of positive discrimination so if it's going to make people discuss the issue and make it prominent instead of white washing it (no pun intended) then I think it is a good thing.

Vivienne has always made a point of using a variety of models which I love and respect her for.

I remember reading an article that Duro Olowu commented on. EDIT. I thought I better check , apologies the article was a repost but i've relinked it for those that are new to the thread like me. :)

Prada isn't fooling anyone. Everyone knows their company is going public and it was simply a PR stunt.

ps. Sessilee walked one of my favourites , Nathan Jenden. He is the creative director of DVF.

I know and it shouldn't be it makes me angry , should a model say yes to "break barriers" that shouldn't even be there in the first place , or say no because she is merely being used to hush critics.

I wish some of the posters here would WAKE UP.

The United States is going to have a minority of white people within twenty years. Europe is increasingly diverse. Asians and Arabs are spending big on luxury brands.

The fashion industry has to get out of its hole and start representing the world it sells to. Hiding racism behind the proclamation of "taste" is not acceptable anymore.

But of course, some designers are more blunt. A black model was told during London Fashion Week that she looked like a monkey. All these racist jackasses should be exposed and kicked out of the fashion industry.

The Hitleresque standards of blond hair and blue eyes don't run the world anymore.

And yes, models are protected by anti-discriminatory laws in the United States. If the agency they work for has fifteen or more employees, they can rightfully file complaints with the EEOC. But luckily, it seems like blacks models are treated better in New York City. So much for the "enlightened" Europeans!

I hope none of that is aimed at me..

London books different models too. It seems odd to me though if New York is labelled as commercial and they book more models , then surely Paris and Milan can no longer argue that a look isn't marketable...

i think this whole debate is just down to a question of taste.
why must people always look for someone to blame? that is when this turned into an issue...

"ethnicity" or "race" doesnt represent any sort of "taste".
if anyone really think certain group of people only represent a particular "taste", then that person must be very narrow minded

btw anyone ever notice there not too much central asian or arabic models on catwalk?

For a person to pick one race over another due to taste IS racism (and yes it is an ugly word), you can't spin it positively no matter how hard you try.

If you even attempted to use 'taste' as an excuse, you might be able to say that some skin tones look better in certain colors of clothing - fine; but unless the entire fashion line (or fashion world) is using one fabric color for the each and every show, then there is NO EXCUSE! Call it what it is and don't insult my (and everyones') intelligence.

^ i hope i didnt cause some misunderstading because my word are sometimes confusing

what i am trying to say is that there is no groups of people in world process one flavor:
not all Russians pocess a certain taste,
neither do middle eastern people,
and of course addressing to this thread, African people (and its descent) DO NOT pocess only one particular taste.

but unfortunately many people still believe that type of stereotype/and framing, and that i think this is one of the biggest issue in terms of modeling.
