Recommendations : Books About Fashion & Designers

Steven Klein has a new book coming out on the 1st November 2011 in a limited print of 750 copies, I'm unsure if they're going to be signed or not but it definitely looks interesting and i hope it'll be available in a regular print soon as the price for the limited edition is £850 with the book covered in embossed Leather.

Man by Steven Klein (Published by Damiani, 200 Pages Hardback)

Steven Klein's darkly sexual and surreal portraits of the likes of Madonna, Lady Gaga and Brad Pitt have defined a new idiom in fashion and celebrity photography. This luxurious production features his vision of the male nude in previously unpublished photographs and drawings. With its bold declarations of sexuality and an irreverent stance on celebrity, the fashion photography and celebrity portraiture of Steven Klein has set a defining look for our times. Klein is a very different breed of photographer to his colleagues in the field, as any one of his images conveys: the primarily cinematic character of his work lends it a rare scale of drama ('he thinks about the entirety of the set,' says his W magazine collaborator Dennis Freedman). More notoriously, Klein laces his staged scenarios with powerful doses of sadomasochism and surrealism, as his famous portraits of Brad Pitt and Madonna and his controversial video for Lady Gaga's "Alejandro" make plain. Today, as New York magazine recently raved, 'Klein is, arguably, the most influential (and busy) fashion photographer in the world...even while his career seems to be all about flouting the rules of fashion photography.' This extraordinary volume concentrates Klein's vision of the male nude and male sexuality in a series of previously unseen photographs and drawings addressing themes of death, desire, violence and transformation. Bound in leather by Italian craftsmen, and limited to an edition of 750 copies, it is the most concise and extravagant statement of the Klein aesthetic yet published.

A couple of good ones: Coco Chanel- The Legend and the Life by Justine Picardie...A really great, very readable, and as factual as possible book. The author broke down the many, many myths of previous bios and Coco's own 'tales', and found much of it was not true at all! Coco was very prominent in High Society as time went by and seems to have intentionally created her own myth of the past to cover up her rather embarrassing early days...A very well done book!
And- The House of Klein by Lisa Marsh, which is from a few years back but focuses on the business side of the Calvin story, which is just as fascinating as the designs- an excellent book for fashion students that looks more at the big picture...I was always amazed when I was around the biz how little of what went on was design oriented; so much of it is determined by marketing and dollars and cents... ;)

the book on ysl's exposition at the met is not to missed.

Personal favourites that some people might not know about: Fashion: The Century of the Designer 1900-1999 by Charlotte Seeling, Visionaries: Interviews with Fashion Designers by Susannah Frankel, and Japan Fashion Now by Valerie Steele. I'm looking forward to the Hussein Chalayan book that comes out this year.

Also, I was just at Borders today and decided to take a flip through Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's Influence and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.

i'm just wondering are there any books about burberry?

Can anyone recommend any good reading materials for someone looking to get into fashion buying?

Just finished and really enjoyed - The Chronology of Fashion : from Empire Dress to Ethical Design by N.J Stevenson.

The Chronology of Fashion traces the history of fashion from the late 18th century up to the present. Following a strict chronology, it pinpoints the times when a distinctive style of suit or dress, hat or handbag, cut or style of hair or fabric, or indeed an entire look attained its peak of popularity and influence. Highly illustrated with full figure images, silhouettes and swatches of materials, the book also looks at key designers, how fashion has played a crucial role in art and film, and the trends that identified and defined various periods. This book should be a must for anyone interested in fashion and its development.

I picked up The Ellements of Style at the local book fair. It's got some lovely images and though it's celebrity-focused, the style tips really are great.

Hands down Taschen's Fashion: A History from the 18th to the 20th Century. I looooove it.

could anybody recommend me a good book about hermés ?
has anybody read 'le carré de hermés' / 'the hermés scarf'? link HERE
i'm planning to buy this but i'm not sure if it's good.
thank you for the answers.

After reading about it here, I just purchased Deluxe: How luxury lost its lustre. I almost bought it on Amazon a week or so ago but thought against it, as I knew I would get sucked in and not study! But I just found it in my local bookstore that is closing down, and bought it for $10!

I am sucked in thus far (though, I am limiting myself to a few pages here and there). I have found it really informative thus far, not just some frivolous read. The blurb on the back sort of makes it sound a bit of a book of "yeah, we know", wish washy stuff but inside it is jam packed with info.

Will update when I am finished!

Patrick Demarchelier's Dior Tome

Fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier is putting the focus on Christian Dior in a new book titled “Dior Couture.” Published by Rizzoli, the 248-page tome — out Nov. 15 — has 120 color and black-and-white images that span from the birth of the house in 1947 until today. Among the women donning the gowns are actress Charlize Theron and model Gisele Bündchen. Artist Jeff Koons penned the foreword, and editor Ingrid Sischy wrote an essay. The title will retail for 100 euros, or $139 at current exchange.

DAZED & CONFUSED BOOK: MAKING IT UP AS WE GO ALONG

For our 20th anniversary we gathered our friends, family and coverstars in this book of legendary photo shoots and creative collaborations

It’s our 20th birthday and what better way to celebrate than by releasing a brand new, shiny book? Published by Rizzoli and edited by founders, journalist and writer Jefferson Hack and photographer Rankin, 'Making It Up As We Go Along' takes a visual look back on the colourful and multifarious content featured in the magazine over the last 20 years.

Including quotes, recollections and interviews with the photographers, stylists, designers, artists and musicians who have contributed over the years, the book provides a rich mix of different voices that have shaped the magazine’s agenda and form. Legendary photo shoots and creative collaborations are re-visited, alongside original art projects and cutting-edge fashion editorial, including iconic material by Alexander McQueen, Damien Hirst and Vivienne Westwood.

Dazed favourites and cover stars Björk, Harmony Korine, Chloe Sevigny and Thom Yorke are also featured, with an introductory conversation between Jefferson Hack and Rankin serving as an insight into the very beginnings of Dazed & Confused.

'Making It Up As We Go Along' is out October 20, 2011, published by Rizzoli.
