Just finished reading Like no other store... by Marvin Traub (Bloomingdales)
and Crossing Fifth Avenue by Ira Neimark (Bergdoff Goodman)
Both of these men took stores that were already well known and turned them into cultural institutions and landmarks. A must read for fashion merchandising students.

My shame, never heard about these books. So thank you for your recommendation! :flower:

^ Re: Assouline's Chanel Books- obviously the boxed set is out of sight, but I have managed to find each volume on EBay over time, and they are some of my favorites; beautiful pictures, many drawings by Karl as well- highly recommended if you can find them at an affordable price...

New Book!

Bob Recine, Alchemy of Beauty
Art Director: Fabien Baron
Publish: Damiani

-------------------------------------

The man behind some of the most avant-garde hairdos and head dresses worn by Lady Gaga, Recine has taken hair styling to incredibly creative heights-often literally, as he propels the braids and locks of his subjects into gravity-defying contours, augmenting them with sculptural gestures such as clumps of headphones or sunglasses, tendrils of Play-Doh and complex meshes of wire or cellophane. Starting out as an artist, Recine secured a project creating hairstyles and head ornaments for the windows of Henri Bendel. His designs caught the eye of world-renowned hair stylist Jean Louis David, who offered him the opportunity to travel to Paris and hone his craft; four years later, Recine returned to New York, armed with a portfolio of innovative stylings for top photographers and magazines. Today Recine is a legend among A-list celebrities, having worked with Gwyneth Paltrow, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, Angelina Jolie, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Kate Hudson, Renée Zellweger, Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman and Tilda Swinton. His talents have even returned him circuitously to the world of fine art, for his extensive collaborations with Vanessa Beecroft. Alchemy of Beauty gathers original artwork by Recine, from sketches, collages and paintings to previously published and unpublished editorial images of his extraordinary sculpture and headdresses. Art direction for the volume is by Fabien Baron.
with photos of Mario Sorrenti, Robbie Fimmano, Mariano Vivanco, etc.

I got this book the other day, its pretty much the exhibition in a book form, its very straight forward, a look at the archive and the focus is on the individual pieces, there aren't many editorials showing the clothes, its more plain and straight to the point and it does make you appreciate the clothes more and it made me feel better about not being able to go to the exhibit.

Azzedine Alaîa In The 21st Century

This book is published on the occasion of the second exhibition about the work of Azzedine Alaïa at the Groninger Museum in The Netherlands. This exhibition displays the most fantastic Alaïa fashion creations of the last ten years. The name Alaïa stands for glamour, sensuality, style, cut, self-confidence, comfort and, of course, sex appeal. His tight dresses embrace the bodies of the world's most seductive and successful women and received great acclaim from celebrities such as Naomi Campbell, Stephanie Seymour, Victoria Beckham, Shakira and Michelle Obama.

Alber Elbaz, Lanvin by Shelly Verthime & Pascal Dangin

It has been ten years since the creator Alber Elbaz, playful and discreet as a child, enchants women's fashion brand for Lanvin. For ten years of this collaboration, Lanvin released a superb book that will mark the first chapter may be the next ten years?

This book, simply called "Alber Elbaz, Lanvin", traces the decade of this life together, but shows us precisely the creative work behind the Lanvin Fall-Winter 2011.

A book that is only available in a deluxe hardcover with a cover made by hand, bound in silk chiffon grosgrain. Lovers of luxury impressions, I know at least one, appreciate typography carved and gilt on the edge of pages. In printing this is a very delicate work. The book will find a little protection in its cardboard box, also made hands.

To let the magic, it will gently turn the 688 pages and discover the 317 boards. For those who are interested (s) by this collector's item, know that it is sold at Lanvin flagship store at 15 and 22 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honore but also online, on the site, prices € 320.

The texts are signed by Alber Elbaz, co-edited by Pascal Dangin and Shelly Verthime. Photographs are the Purpose of Sou Lai. Creative direction and art was created by Pascal Dangin. Published by Steidl

Alber Elbaz has explained, with his trademark humour and modesty, how his own appearance influenced his debut book - which pays tribute to the many artisans who help make his collection, from fitters to those who sew the stitches.
"The book is small and fat - something I could relate to!" Elbaz told the International Herald Tribune, before adding, "I was searching for a story that people would get when they look at the book - and the story is the process."
Heavily picture-based, 3,000 pictures were taken for the book in a bid to document all elements of how the Lanvin team works. Each gilded page is narrated with a short quote from Elbaz, with musings such as "It's not about the front or back of a dress. It's about what is in-between; the body, the human being; the person."
The book will be available in early spring, priced at €340 (£265).
