Recommendations : Books About Fashion & Designers

My friend is going to London at December and I want her to bring some fashion related books mentioned here :) Ordering from Amazon is too pricey for Russia :( What do you think she can find in bookshops?

"Mémoire de la mode"

A very good collection about designers, style, magazines, etc ,that surely many TFS members know, but not yet mentionned in this thread.
"Mémoire de la mode" éditions Assouline
I have read some of them, always interesting with beautiful iconography.
Because this collection lasted for ten years some titles have run out.
The covers of some of them:

The Rise of Fashion: A Reader, edited by Daniel Leonhard Purdy.
This collection is a dream for someone who loves both fashion and social science. It includes writings by J-J Rousseau, Hegel, Georg Simmel, Thorstein Veblen, and many others. These prominent minds have thought about questions like what fashion does, what clothes should look like, and why fashions change. I LOVE THIS BOOK!

Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster, by Dana Thomas.
Describes the history of luxury and high fashion, the globalization of luxury, and where luxury has been going. Gives examples based on such fashion houses as Prada, Chanel, and Hermes.

Also, I echo those who said The End of Fashion by Teri Agins.

My current fave: the new Lanvin book..
This now replaces my Shocking: Schiaparelli book as my new fave..This book (which is about $30 cheaper thru Amazon) does a great job at showing how Elbaz's work follows in the same spirit as Jeanne Lanvin's original creations..Plus, the text is very well-written, with details such as personal life, how she differed from the other designers of her time, and various sources of inspiration, not to mention countless images from the house's archives...Loving it!

My friend whom I asked to buy some fashion related books during her trip to London sent me SMS that there are no any fashion books I asked her about!!!! How can it be! May be she is going to the wrong book stores?

Fashion books are pretty specialized, so I would think that she'd need to go to some book stores that specialized in fashion books ... perhaps in or near fashion colleges or in the fashion district (do they even have a fashion district in London?).

I know that there are lots of choices in in the book store in the California Apparel Mart in L.A. ... which is a big building in the fashion district here, where there are lots of designers, wholesalers and showrooms. So perhaps London has something similar?

Thanks Bette for sharing :) I'll try to do a search!

Go to RD Franks, it's near Topshop by Oxford circus in London. That's the only place I know that specializes in fashion books..

Thank you:woot::woot::woot: I'll tell her:D. RD is the name or some abbreviation? Is it a bookstore?

My grandma got me this book last Christmas...she found it at a yard sale, no less!
It's my favorite fashion book! It's so phenomenal! It's basically Lacroix's diary for an Haute Couture collection, from the very start to the very finish! The book itself is a work of art, just as much as the clothes are! Lacroix does these amazing collages of inspiration and I love his sketching style...I just look at this book all the time!

^^Thank you SO much for that link! I had never seen it before, but I LOVE mood boards/ inspiration collages!

I really enjoyed Fashion Babylon, and Deluxe - How Luxury Lost its Lustre. Currently reading the Terry Agins one - is it The End of Fashion? Obviously the Vogue ones are beautiful, I have Unseen Vogue, People in Vogue and In Vogue [the massive one]. Lots more on my Want list, I feel like these books are all I read - I'm doing my dissertation and have tonnes of research to do!

Just found a bunch of those recommended here on eBay!

Thanks for all your input everyone.
