Recommendations : Books About Fashion & Designers

I have four favorites. Two are classics, one is a new acquisition and the last is self serving (I wrote it). My choices are more of a technical bent, the kind that I know working designers are more likely to use.

My most favoritist one is Vionnet by Betty Kirke. A classic. A review with analysis is here (scroll down).

My second favorite classic is Haute Couture, The Tradesman's Entrance. It's about the artisans behind the scenes who make haute couture possible (pleaters, embroiderers etc). A review of it, mostly about pleating with some photos is here (also includes pleating resources if you're needing to produce pleated skirts). Rare title, pricey.

My newest book-toy is Pattern Magic. No direct link, not on Amazon but several sources are listed here. It is avant garde pattern cutting, most useful for pattern makers but should be inspirational for designers in style development. Available and inexpensive, most ship from Japan with free postage (you can $5 extra for expedited delivery). Here's a photo of the cover:

My last favorite is as I said, self-serving (I wrote it) altho it is the most highly rated book in the garment industry so it's not just me :). You'd read this one if you really wanted to make a go of launching your own line. It's The Entrepreneur's Guide to Sewn Product Manufacturing. Over 10 free sample chapters are here (select "my book").

Thanks, Kathleen! All of those sound really interesting! (And it's so cool that you wrote a book!)

not sure of my fave fashion book ever, but i'm positive that the worst fashion book i ever read was :
The End of Fashion: How Marketing Changed the Clothing Business Forever
by Teri Agins

terribly missleading book, avoid at all costs

I love the Schiaparelli book previously mentioned, and the exhibit publications that went along with the recent Chanel and Balenciaga exhibits are very good.

100 fashion designers and 10 curators - i hope i didn't misspell it

^Does that come in a two-volume hardcover version, too? If it is, that is an EXCELLENT book! Great resource and inspiration!

Seconding the rec for 'Fashion - From the 18th to 20th Century'. It has some intriguing clothes in there and beautiful close-ups of beadwork.

I received 'Dusk Till Dawn - A History of the Evening Dress' as a present a couple of years ago and it's a very glamorous book - many stunning colour photos in it, as well as actual written content. Although I mainly ooh and ahh over all the pretty dresses!

Welcome to tFS, scotsgirl and thank you for sharing. :flower:

Fashion Babylon -Shows what it's like for a small, established London designer nowadays.

A Beautiful Fall -Not enough about YSL or Karl's actual designs and a lot about the personal relationships of them both, but it gives you a real sense of what it was like in Paris in the 70's -the glory and fantasy of fashion, right before everything got overly-commercialised.

i really have enjoyed the fashion sketchbook (fourth edition) i'm not studying design but i still enjoy sketching so its been really great to have for different
technique purposes.

I know it has been mentioned but Fashion Babylon really is a good read. Its a sort of hybrid of factual anecdotes and a novel at the same time. It revolves around a young designer in London and everything they face. Id say it was worth a read.

I freaking love this book. I'll post pictures if I have the time.

Lena, I read The End of Fashion, and I'm not sure why you say it is misleading? I really thought the book was great

Anyway, I like these books:

Fashion Babylon by Imogen Edwards Jones
The Beautiful Fall by Alicia Drake
Some Like it Haute by Julie K.L. Dam

I'm in the middle of The Beautiful Fall right now:flower:

Books on Fashion designers

Hello Guys,

I don't know if there is yet a thread about so called fashion books...
But I would like to know if there are more books about the big fashions houses...
I already own some of them, like Gucci by Gucci, Tom Ford - Tom Ford or Louis Vuitton.
I hope you get what i mean...
Thanks for your help! :flower:
