Recommendations : Books About Fashion & Designers

i'm currently reading 'the fake factor' by sarah mccartney which mostly focuses on why people buy fake purses, as well as mentioning other fake items that are regularly sold as well. it's pretty interesting.

If anyone is in Hong Kong, they are some really good fashion books in the book area next to the IFC cinema.

When I think of fashion books I think of the educational ones. As in the one's we use in class and stuff.

So far I'm really into my flat pattern book. lol.

also books for inspiration ^ ;)

which one are you using, superbeautiful

I just read Hadley Freeman's The Meaning of Sunglasses. It was quite amusing although her love for Kate Moss got rather tiring.

Affordable Fashion Books or Magazines

a good book I would suggest is Deluxe by Dana Thomas.
It is about the big companies like LVMH and such, how they started and have keeping up.
It shows the reality of how fashion business works today, how decisons are taken and why, and who makes them.
a book about money, not about creativity

Deluxe: How luxury lost its luster -- Dana Thomas
(Very good and informational without being boring. I learned a lot from this book)
The Beautiful Fall: Fashion, Genius, and Glorious Excess in 1970s Paris -- Alicia Drake
Fashion Now - taschen (and Fashion Now 2)
This Little Piggy Went to Prada - Amy Allen
(fun poetry book with nice illustration)

and for fiction:
The Bergdorf Blondes - Plum Skyes
the Shopaholic series - Sophie Kinsella (obviously)

I'm dying to get a copy of Deluxe: How Luxury Lost its Luster! It's nowhere to be found in my place. :(

Print In Fashion by Marnie Fogg - such a fab book! It's full of bright, beautiful prints and has a few good quotes and loads of information on designers like Matthew Williamson and Basso & Brooke.

Excess: Fashion and Underground in the 80s is a really cool book with lots of great images (mostly from period magazines & ads) of the main fashion trends of the 80s (power dressing, new wave, japanese avant garde, punk, street fashion, etc) and also essays about and pictures of related trends in areas other than fashion.

Breaking the Mode features gorgeous avant-garde clothes from LACMA's collection

Belgian Fashion Design features dozens of Belgian designers from well-known like margiela, demeulemeester, bikkembergs, etc. to much more obscure. there was a copy at the strand when i went in this weekend. it is worth buying if you are inerested in avant-garde fashion.

if you can find them, old copies of european fashion mags (donna, vanity, vogue italia, etc.) are fun to look at. my favorite publications are back issues of book moda, gap collections (not related to the gap clothing chain!), fashion preview, and other periodicals like these (they are full of hundreds of runway photos for each season).

i've hear great things about this book but it's not strictly about fashion designers
it's called Stylist:The Interpreters of Fashion
here is the link on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Stylist-Interpreters-Fashion-Sarah-Mower/dp/0847829243
and a little intro:
From the editors of Style.com, the hub of runway buzz, comes this savvy look at the individuals who propel the fashion world forward and declare what’s hot and what’s not. Called upon by designers, editors, photographers, and celebrities, stylists have a sixth sense for what is now and next in the fashion ether. Featuring sixteen of today’s top tastemakers, Stylist focuses on these fashion insiders whose precocious sense for the next big thing often results in trends of global proportions. Organized by stylist and featuring the photography of such luminaries as Cecil Beaton, Richard Avedon, Steven Meisel, and Annie Leibovitz among others, this book documents the work and contributions of each stylist through photographs of their creative output and inspirations, and illustrates their distinctive taste, individual flair, and talent for igniting global fashion fervor. Selected for their originality and, in many cases, enduring fame, each stylist included in this volume has reached the pinnacle of success in their chosen métier. Author Sarah Mower’s interviews with the most influential stylists distill for us through conversation and example the fine art of the fashion pronouncement and what it means to be at the threshold of the cutting edge.
