Rodarte : Kate and Laura Mulleavy

^it's an interesting point and maybe it's because rodarte is an american label who doesn't quite meander to the cliched american standards of design or personality? critics are never satisfied though. they always complain about the desolate nature of creativity and personality in american fashion and finally two unassuming, ambitious young women come along and present something unlike american fashion has had,and they want them to water it down.

OLYMPIC SPORT: Have Rodarte’s Kate and Laura Mulleavy set their eyes on activewear? Not quite, but The New York Times Magazine recently turned to the ethereal sisters to wardrobe several U.S. athletes participating in the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, which begin Feb. 12. The Ryan McGinley portfolio, due out in the magazine this Sunday, features 13 Olympians training in custom-made Rodarte knit garments, including figure skater Johnny Weir in mid-axel sporting a full crochet knit jumpsuit. Other Olympians in the story, which McGinley shot on location during training sessions across the U.S., include figure skater Evan Lysacek, Rachael Flatt, and pairs skaters Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker; freestyle skiers Jeret “Speedy” Peterson, Hannah Kearney and Emily Cook; snowboarders Hannah Teter and Kelly Clark, and ski jumper Anders Johnson.

“It was quite different for each athlete and each sport,” the designers said through their spokesman, Brian Phillips, via e-mail. “We built the looks knowing that the athletes needed to be able to keep the same range of motion in our clothing as they have in their normal

there's something about the more wintry shots that sort of enhance the spirit of those pieces. i can't explain why??

btw,i don't watch figure skating at all but johnny weir is such a rodarte kind of person, yes? i remember when he first started out geoffrey b. small was designing costumes for him. so his taste-level is adventurous and quite high.

all of rodarte's knits remind me of trent reznor's knit sweater from the "closer" video.

i wonder if thats where they got the idea.

that's an interesting observation lucy because in those days that style of knitting was mostly done by designers with a goth-y elements like jean colonna,demeulemeester...i think even margiela and mcqueen had done variations of that raw loose-knit. it's really more a technique than being derived from one particular thing. i just think it was always considered too ragamuffin or ugly beautiful to be accepted by mainstream.

Does anyone know somewhere to buy Rodarte in Australia? Alternatively, online?
Thank you in advance x

I just read that Rodarte designed the ballet costumes for Darren Aronofsky's upcoming film, Black Swan (starring Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder and Mila Kunis)!

^ Great info... I'll have to pass that info along to my Rodarte-obsessed friend.

Omg I can't imagine how fantastic that is going to look.
