This collection is a slow burn, a complicated attempt to infuse modernity with the soul and spirit of the past.
The styling, while not effortless, is commendable, still, for fusing basics with extraordinary pieces that suggest a kind of localized artistry and handicraft. His Saint Laurent has a hard shell that protects a lush, irrational sensuality, revealing itself through the handmade, the individual, limited edition, or one of a kind. And all the imperfections, the bumps, scratches, bruises, mismatched eyes on the models makes it feel all the more real. It is interesting to see him evolve and become more coherent with a message that is becoming all the more seductive and, also, more reflective of what I think YSL always tried to infuse into his designs: a yearning, a desire so strong that it couldn't possibly be fulfilled.
