My patternmaking book (the women's version of your book) covers, the basics, skirts, more tailored outifits and knits, so I think it will probably be covered in the menswear section. I hope you can get a chance to skim through, it will be very helpful.

thanks, bonchic!

swandiamondrose--finally, someone else who appreciates handwork! i've seen some of your bags and from what i can tell the quality looks VERY GOOD.

Great job porkchop girl! The top is really cute and I love the skirt. And you made the pattern yourself which is always a bit more work. Nice how the top folds down to reveal a different fabric, I like designs that have little touches like that in which you can decide how you want it even though it is only small.

great work.... Are you studying fashion design in college or university porkchopgirl? And Critics darling that is a very very nice cute hoodie, did you make it from scratch ?

kem--No, I'm not studying fashion design. I already have a degree, and I don't have the money for another. I've only taken a sewing class and beginning patternmaking for the heck of it. To be honest, I've only been "seriously" sewing for about 6 months. I don't think I'm interested in being a designer or anything; I just like making things.

Hi, I hope I'm asking this in the right spot but it's not exactly a sewing Q. I can't sew but I seem to remember that there is a way to make a no sew wrap or scarf using wool challis or something similar. There are no sew polar fleece projects galore on the Internet but not wool.

I do have a tailor who can sew up edges for me but if I could do it myself by fraying (fringe?) the edges that would be better. Is it possible? TIA!

Pretty Malice, love the fabric. Thank you to everyone for the nice comments! Here's a new top I made out of soft grey jersey knit and vintage fabric my grandma gave me. I braided material for the straps and under the bust.

I'm sewing a short sleeve jacket and a skirt for my ready to wear construction class! I'll have to take a picture when it's done. I couldn't find the kind of fabric I wanted (because the teacher wanted it to be a certain kind) so I had to settle on something.

I have so many ideas but I have no idea how to sew, my mum said she'll teach me...maybe one day.

Bonchic--Don't you hate it when you can't find the fabric you're looking for? It's even hard online. A lot of the pictures aren't high-res enough and you can't really tell what the fabric looks like. I had to spend $20 just to get some measly samples.

Aimee--If you're mom has a sewing machine, you can try reading the manual and just playing around with it. I found that looking at the construction of my own ready-to-wear clothes really helped. I never had anyone to teach me how to sew, and I'm embarassed of my early projects, but I kept on getting better and better through experience. You'll figure it out. :)

I'm quite the sewing novice, so please excuse my ignorance, but I want to make a tunic/dress, but I'm not sure how much fabric I should order. On average, how many yards should I need to make a short length 3/4 sleeve dress?

Does anyone know where I can get a sewing pattern for Grace Kelly's wedding gown? Thanks!

i was wondering if any of you own your own dress form. i was thinking about ordering one, but im torn because i love the look and construction of antique dress forums (and the quality seems so much better) and the new ones seem so cheaply made (this is just MHO from seeing pics).

porkchopgirl: I love your clothes!

I don't think my hand sewing could ever look as good as a sewing machine's. haha Though I do understand the appreciation for it. It's also more meditative, and I would probably make less major mistakes doing it.

I keep wanting to sew my own clothes. Mostly because I get frustrated with shopping for specific things. But I'm not very good yet.
