critiquesdarling~ beautiful work!

rightguard~ believe it or not, but target has some decent beginner sewing machines which are great to learn on....by europro and singer. well under $250, so you'll have extra $$ for notions, a sewing box and maybe some fabric :flower:

anyone who is interested or could give me some feedback etc....i started a thread in the careers and edu. thread called "senior project: 'alvitre' my own line".....(http://www.thefashionspot.com/forums/f90/senior-project-alvitre-my-own-line-47926.html)

im doing a capstone project and starting a label of handbags and accessories and possibly some basic clothes. im doing everything from scratch and will be posting designs and finshed products on there for this project and for imput, criticisms, etc.....

Oh my! How I love this thread!

So much inspiration. papergown, what a fabulous blouse.

I really need to get started, but... I feel like its so hard to justify the time and expense of learning how to sew. I feel like it will take me so long to make anything worth wearing! I'd also like to learn how to do minimal tailoring and repairs.

Any tips? Keep up the good work everyone

don't think like that

 clothes-making definitely takes a lot of patience
i've made like 5 drafts on paper and 5+ on fabric
and i still haven't succeeded (but now i think i know what i need to do...)

Just take it slow, a project at a time.
You can try just getting ready-made patterns at a store and make something from there. Just get a sewing book with it--it will tell you how to do different kinds of seams and alterations and...
Afterwards you can start drafting your own.

oh my gosh. the Big Bruiser is finally done!

so it's cord on top [from thrifted Tommy Hilfiger cords].the rest is my favourite sweatshirt fabric [also thrifted]. and it is lined in black and grey pinstriped cotton [from my mom's stash]. the rings are metal and they are BIG, they are goldish but are tarnishing to a nice brass tone.

now i am doing one in black. oh so serious.

SwanDiamondRose, I've been looking through your site and I must say your bags are absolutely beautiful! You've definitely got a good prduct going there :)

:flower: hey thank you so much Bonchic, BaroqueRockstar {nice name by the way}, MissWednesday {thank you for looking at my site too}, and skot4mc :flower:

and Bonchic, it is similar to my 1st bags so i worked from their patterns. and their patterns come from looking at basic totes for structure and then drawing out the main front/back piece of the bag. getting the curve right is important to me.

I just started a sewing/construction class, and today was the first time I touched a sewing machine. It was awesome, I started taking it apart like a carburetor! I wish these things had clutches though...

SDR - that is such a cute bag!! it looks great!

i think i've mastered altering my pants/denim. it's really hard for me to find the right fit in pants because i'm short and a little chubby. if only there was a size 27(short). since the skinny jeans trend started, i tried on so many different brands but non fits me right so i had to DIM. so far, 6 pairs i've done and it looks fantastic! sewing machine saved my life!:D

you guys are all so wonderfully talented! i sew on and off and i have a few projects that i would like to get started on. can anyone tell me of some really good fabric stores in los angeles where i can find a good selection of nice luxury fabrics. i'd like to find some handpainted silk, some silk surat for making ties, and some nice cashmeres in bright colors for making matching pencil skirts and fall swing coats. i am very new to the area and i don't know where to go, but i don't want to use the polyester/wool blends that are available in places like joann fabrics. thanks so much.

I Just Sewed This Vintage-Style Purse

Was having some fun making this black velvet evening purse with ribbons, fabric and beads I had on hand.

My girlfriend suggests I make the flowers in black and the cord in black, silver, gold or bronze. I hadn't thought of black flowers on black...

I'm already working on purse #2, which will have some antique lace and pink & burgundy organza ribbon flowers, but for #3 (if there is another one), think I'll take her advice and try doing the flowers and leaves in those colors.

I think these will make nice holiday gifts, so I'm starting now.

Swan, I love that bag! The braided handles are so pretty.

Amy, Great idea to give handmade bags as Christmas gifts! That is so personal and a nice motivation to warm up the sewing machine...

CriticsDarling, I love those blouses! Thanks for posting the pattern # too, it is so hard to find good non-old-fashioned patterns (I haven't learned how to make my own yet, sigh)

Emanuelle, Have you gone to the Garment District yet? Michael Levine's there has a pretty nice selection. They have 2 buildings, a garment-fabric one and an upholstery one.

Wow, just realized that I sound really enthused, lol... Is this crafts section of TFS new? It's kinda brilliant.

Your bag is superb. The fabric looks thick; was it difficult to sew on the machine?

Amy & Swan~ Love those purses, they're both so me! I always love checking this thread and see what you do that's new!

I made a new dress...kimono mini

but sadly the sleeves are just not flexable enough in the armscye, so I'm going to have to take the sleeves off & make it sleeveless. Oh well :)

CriticsDarling:
Thanks for the great compliment.

Do you still have the same fabric left--or something to complement the color scheme you've got going now?

I'm thinking...would it be possible to slit the top from the edge where the fuschia neckline meets the shoulder on down the sleeve, then add fabric down the center where you cut? This would add a fashion statement as well as extra fabric to accommodate the flexibility of the armhole. Hope you know what I'm talking about.
