Shopping in Vietnam

hey guys, am going to Vietnam in june, and i hear tailoring in Hoi An is big. Has anybody been? Can they recommend a good tailor?

Try posting at styleforum.net, there are a few regulars there who have vietnamese tailors. I've been to Saigon and used a tailor there, was about $250 for two suits including fabric, I copied a Jil Sander style suit and it was quite good. COmmunicating what you want will be the diffiiculty unless you can speak Viet. Make sure you get the best quality cloth, try to avoid the tourist tailors, whilst they may cater better for you, they are usually pricier. SOrry not so good in recommending tailors for you.

If you are in Saigon, you should visit Zen Plaza, which sells clothes made by Vietnamese designers. Some of them are really worth the money (not that cheap, actually). Most well known and respected in Vietnam is Minh Hanh. Her clothes though are way too artistic which mean you will find it hard to wear on daily basis. There are some other designers, but to each their own, so I can't make any suggestion. If you fly with Vietnam Airlines, there's Heritage Fashion magazine to help you out. It's really good and worth seeing (I doubt about the reading part ).
Anyway, the fashion scene is developing quickly, not just the tailor thingie it used to be before. Many Japanese are coming to Saigon for shopping. So you may want to check it out.
By the way, silk is what Vietnamese prefer to wear in the summer since it's humid and too hot. The best are Khai Silk and Kenly Silk. But if you are in Hanoi, there's the whole street that sell silk. So you will have a nice choice!
Beside tailors are bad and expensive in Saigon, so go up to Hanoi or Hoi An.
