I didn't find any thread about skateboarding, only a few posts here and there. So here I go :)

I've been wanting to learn for about 4 years now, but never really went through. I went to a skatepark in paris with my cousins who skate very well, and one of them had to change boards, so I have a spare board to wheel-up  and I've also been watching documentaries about it, and just documenting myself in general on boards and wheels etc...

Who here skates? :D Any tips on buying board stuff, or how to start, or even just talk about skateboarding in general? :)

I would love to know how to skateboard but I'm kind of afraid of trying it out... I would look like a total moron

I try once in a while, but fail miserably. Maybe I just don't have "feel" for it.

I have a Snakeboard. I use to wear it more often, but just a couple of hours, as I lived in roller skates. I never learnt how to jump or do anything useful because it is far more difficult, and you need extra gear. I don't dominate it, and seems like I never will...

Funny to see this topic in Skin and Body Care. When I used to skateboard, it was more like Skin and Body Destruction! But maybe I never had the feel for it, either.

im thinking about going to the skateshop this afternoon to check the stuff i need. :) im sure ill suck, but practice makes perfect, it'll give me a challenge during my spare time!

^haha yeah i know, but there's no sport thread and everything from yoga to exercice threads are in this section. ^_^

anyway, concerning skateboarding, i love the documentary dogtown and the zboys and the movie lords of dogtown. Susanna-cole, in the documentary thread, gave me a list of other movies that are good
Yes! I'm a fan of Stacy Peralta's documentaries, as well, I own both! Definitely would recommend The Endless Summer to you. Depending a bit on how much you like surfing, maybe Step Into Liquid or A Broke Down Melody? I'm reading a book called Beautiful Losers right now, there's a documentary companion, which I have yet to see, but the book has a good bit on skateboarding, especially the Dogtown, Z-Boys skateboard era, so maybe the documentary (by the same name as the book) does as well? It's available for instant streaming on Netflix, if you use Netflix.

I feel like there's more I'd recommend that I'm not recollecting off the top of my hand, will come back later if I think of any more you might like.

I've skated since I was a little kid, but kinda stopped after I broke my wrist when I landed primo a few years back...

i used to skate in my teens/early 20s, but i am now allergic to asphalt...
i've moved on to snowboarding...same feeling but you're on a softer surface...

aww that sucks... :( do you guys ever miss it? What kind of skating did you guys do? (more figure or just riding or pools etc?)

I was wondering if you would have any tips and advice to give for beginners...? :)

I guess I miss it...even though I still have my board.

As for tips, just get used to riding around first and then you can learn how to ollie (look up videos on youtube for help).
After that you can keep learning more, but the ollie is a key thing to learn!

I actually went two days ago to roller skate and I missed it so much, that I did everything I used to do 7 years ago, including ramp-riding. After going fast down on that ramp, I flew and landed on my knee and elbow... I am now sporting some ugly bruises that are not quite healed yet. But it was worth it!!

^ hope you're ok! (and had fun :p)

^^ thank you for the advice! :D I'm trying to get a hang of skating normally. My dad skated when he was young, so he keeps trying to teach me. He rides his electric bike next to me and drags me along so that "I get the sensations of what riding should be like". I dont know if that's a valid technic but it's fun and it allows us to bond. :)

hahah I kinda thought the same... everyone i know that did or does it... wooo they were risky & got injured now and then... but u know until u learn some tricks u have to fall like a bunch of times...
i had my skateboarding and my mother said: no way!:yuk::lol:

i actually thought this was some newfangled term for some extreme kind of skincare before i decided to check out the thread and voila! real skateboarding

i used to do this alot when i was younger due to an ex giving me a board and it was horrible at first, i fell over half the time and whacked my shins and ankles in the process.. then i got to master the ollie and the kickflip and whatnot in due time and it was smooth sailing once i really got the hang of it. though i never dared doing it on a skatepark cause the flows scared me but it got quite addictive. however the skater lifestyle never really attracted me so i stopped eventually :ninja:-_-

^I have to admit it always fascinated me... when I see guys doing all those crazy jumps and stuff I feel like woooohaaa I'm in love hhahaha :p I know... silly:blush:

i've only tried, but i sucked at it

nonetheless, i'm sorry to say that no other sport is as sexy as skating. there's something about the gliding and the image and feel of skaters.

needless to say, skateboarding has some of the hottest athletes, like, ever.

i also love the clothes, the t-shirts from the skate brands which have such amazing prints, the fantastically colorful shoes...

just have to drop by, i had the phase that i was obsessed with skateboarding. never tried on board though, just pure obsession. there are some nice videos made, i have one from emerica team shot couple of years ago. the music, the vibe, the moves, yeah, i agree, those are hot stuff!

I longboard. I'm not great, I just do it for fun! I want to get better at it. ^_^
