^ i saw a tv show the other day that documented the death of a woman who died due to taking too many vitamins. (she was taking 40 a day!)

My friend told me that one of her high school teachers said that Vitamin Water is bad because it has too many vitamins.

If memory serves me correctly, an abundance of vitamins -say, taking more than the recommended dosage of vitamin C pills during the winter to avoid a cold- will merely be peed out. The body only needs a certain amount and when it's gotten enough, the rest gets flushed out of the body through the urine.

I do not know if that's true for all vitamins, but I'm not 100% that Vitamin Water is bad for you either.

But then again, is anything really good for you? We all die someday. ^_^

so... i will continue my vitamin water binges. :innocent:

too much vitamin A, for example, can cause liver and bone damage, hair loss and double vision.

There is A LOT of vitamin A in a polar bear's liver.
Never eat the liver of a polar bear or you will die.
YOU WILL DIE. :ninja:

But when does anyone get the chance to eat the liver of polar bears?
Don't say I didn't warn you while you're cruising in Alaska. :innocent:

No lie, izzie. So just watch yourself. :shifty:

I think the abundance of vitamins in the liver of a polar bear come from their diet of so much fish, but I'm not 100%.

Fat-soluble vitamins are the ones that can cause damage if taken in excess because they build up in the body's fat cells and take a long time to be used or discarded. Water-soluble vitamins are flushed out in urine so they constantly need to be replenished, and are hard to overdose on.

......but not impossible.
The above, is i believe, a general rule. And needs to be clarified by individual rules, of vitamins.
A lot depends on quantity, and frequency.
Requirements vary from person to person, depending on a number of factors.
And of course, most things are toxic, if taken in excess. So, i guess its important to consider all contributions from diet, and supplements.

For example:

Vitamin C.

Signs of Overdose:
Overdose of oral forms: headache, increased urination, flushed face, nausea or vomiting, lower abdominal cramps, diarrhea. May feel like the flu or common cold.
Injectable forms may result in dizziness or fainting. : Discontinue vitamin and consult doctor immediately.
Dial 911 or 0 or Poison Control Center immediately.

Nician:
There are two forms of niacin: nicotinic acid and nicotinamide.
Taking high doses of nicotinic acid supplements can cause skin flushes. Taking high doses for a long time could lead to liver damage.
There isn't enough evidence to know what the effects might be of taking high doses of nicotinamide supplements each day.

Signs of Overdose:
Signs of an overdose may include body flush, nausea, diarrhea, weakness, lightheadedness, headache, fainting, high blood sugar, high uric acid, heart-rhythm disturbances, and jaundice.

It's harder to get to the point of toxicity with water soluble vitamins, but when I was studying nutrition we did go over what vitamin C toxicity is like. I don't know whether that ever happens with B vitamins, but I don't know if most people are actually in danger of having reason to worry about vitamin/mineral toxicity.

How about we put this in Skin & Body Care? :flower:

 I adore that picture! Those girls.

I came across this VERY OLD thread while searching for something else, and thought to bump up the thread and comment the vitamin water issue.

Actually the vitamin water is basically water, food dye and sugar. A huge hoax so to say. There's nothing healthy about it.

There's 33 grams of sugar in each bottle and about 125-150 cals per bottle and a lot of caffeine, 82 ml. That's A LOT of both. Fruit juices usually have less sugar in them than vw.

It does have vitamins but it's better to get them naturally from fruits, berries etc. than to eat chemically synthesized vitamins. ANd the amount of vitamins is actually very low, you can get more from orange juice. Also the distilled water is kinda weird. I found this quote from seaswell.wordpress.com:

"There’s a lot of controversy surrounding whether or not distilled water is good or bad for you, but I’m not sure I want to put anything in my body that is surrounded by controversy. Not to mention that the little science I do know logically tells me the stuff is bad: because distilled water is stripped of its minerals (“soft”) it will attract vitamins and minerals from your body and you will expel them. That would mean vitamin water actually takes nutrients from you."

So please people don't think that Vitamin Water or any other "health" waters are actually healthy. Drink real water!

Totally agree. At best in the end it does nothing, but I'm more inclined to think they actually harm our bodies, depending on dosage. :yuk:
