Stella McCartney - What's up with all the hype surrounding her?!

Chloe seems to be going better without Stella, if i remember well, ss05 was a huge hit with U.S. buyers
I agree although Phoebe's last three collections have been very similar in many ways, I guess if it ain't broke don't fix it applies here.

Phoebe has been on a roll, I remember her first collection which I hated (I remember burnt orange shag-carpet pants). I adored her S/S 04 collection that's when I was first smitten with Chloe. I adore Chloe's femininity without being too prudish or too sl*tty.

I don't want to sound mean, but will someone please explain the whole deal about her. I don't want to sound redundant, but she wouldn't be where she is today without the help of her "family name".

I think she's totally talentless, she borrows ideas too much from other designers. Her collection does not even have an identity of its own, she's always borrowing other people's ideas, and she's constantly hopping from one train to the other trying to catch on trends as fast as she can.

I don't get why she even gets to have a show of her own. She's a total bore.

And I read she has this weird habit of trying to be super friendly with influential celebs, probably a way to get free publicity.

I think it's ridiculous she's standing where she is today. Is it fair that such talentless people get so much praise?

I don't get it. Someone explain this to me.

Agreed, that's why it's a 'hype'.

In her defense, she was great at Chloe, and two or three or her earlier collections for her own label....but I haven't liked one of her collections in years, I think the last one I did like was s/s 03.

I agree on this one, she did have some great collections at Chloe & her own before, but the recent collections have been very very boring

Sorry to be mean, but she's just some talentless so-called designer who shot to fame thanks to her connections.

Agreed. All I like about Stella is her logo and her perfume. :ninja:

maybe she's going throug a case of designer's block

This is very much the impression I get from looking at her stuff. Like she's trying, but it is not happening.

There have been way too many celebrities hopping onto the runway trying to act like they can design.

I have to admit that JLo's Sweetface line is adorable [despite the redundant use of fur], but she didn't do anything for it. She just makes a 'suggestion' here and there and everything else comes from her design team. They don't get the credit they deserve when they've been the ones making the clothes all alone.

I hate it.

I love Stella. She sure is good at swimwear.

 i know, was amazed by the  fitting when those pics came out, what a disgrace..

travolta, i honestly dont think stella designs much herself and even if she does, it seems that she certainly doesnt 'mess' with 'her' patterns, cause if she did (or if she knew how to) those dreadful swimwear bottoms would have not been there..
like so many 'celebrity designers' she's probably working with a team of 'assistant' designers who she already finds to be trustworthy and talented, then she probably gives general directions or just shorts out whatever her team brings along.
not saying that it does -or doesn't- matter if she knows how to design/make a pattern, what bothers me is that she cannot manage her finished product (collection) too well, i saw her corner at selfridges few months ago, it was the saddest, less inspired booth in the designers area...

I don't know if the fact that Paul is her father helped THAT much but I agree, the clothes don't do it for me, never did. She had some great runway moments but after that (as Lena says) it kind of stops, you don't see the same energy in the shops or on the streets... I fear that the H&M collection will be a very cheap bunch of baggy shirts in lame colours.

i liked her better at chloe, the clothes seemed to have more form or something back there....although i never like her whole collection now, there are always pieces in there that are simply wonderful. and not to forget the shoes: gorgeous! and wearable. and no, they do not fall apart, at least from my own experience.....

sounds like the equivalent of abercrombie

there are just way too many celebrities trying to design. maybe they're bored.. but it's a disgrace for them to think that anyone can design. it's about art, not just doing it because you have extra time. i don't think they respect that sort of art form too much.

I like her and think she has her own identity for a few reasons:

-She uses the most beautiful color palette with a little bit of grey in all of her teals, mauves, pinks, and reds.
-She has a cause: animal rights, she does not use leather, fur, etc.
-Her collections have an interest in being modern and new, which would be much more apparent if she dropped the "glam"

I am going to be honest, she would not be where she is with her talent alone. I wish she could be more consistent, and it is obvious that many different people work on the clothes. A lot of the pieces are complete trash. She still strikes me as smart and genuine though.

aww you guys are harsh! Stella is one of my favorites!

i like a lot of her individual pieces, and love her perfume (especially the small portable roll-on tubes - i wish more perfumes gave that option). as for the rest, she is probably having to do a lot of her growing up in public with her pants down, so to speak. since she is the daughter of one of the most famous musicians ever, she's always going to get breaks she didn't earn and criticism she didn't deserve. i'll have to trust the more experienced here when you say that she is derivative, as i don't see the references yet - and i am not so sure i'd be offended if i did. i think fashion is a lot like music that way, the purists and real fans get upset when someone 'steals' a style they are particularly fond of, while the uneducated say "hey, it's got a good beat, why not dance?"

i also like the fact that she doesn't use leather or fur -
swimwear was pretty hideous, i agree -
i don't know about all the rest, i just know what i like....:flower:

I don't think she is all bad.. although most of her stuff is totally awful, I like the colour pallet and that it is a little bit more modern and liberated than say gucci or D&G. I'm very happy that she makes Vegitarian shoes, even if the design is not so great.

i for one agree with you, seraphelle...

i like stella and i think she has and will continue to grow into her own.....she uses a beautiful palette and somehow seems to blend the feminine and the structured in a young, fresh way.....she's relatable...she's versatile....she's young...her clothes may not be the most functional, or the best designs, but she's somewhat of a package... and for a young hip crowd, she represents clean, fresh, wholesome but not overly mature style....i commend her for what she's done, connections or not.....i think we forget sometimes that there are plenty of people out there with the connections and with feet in the door who choose to use it for the negative....at least stella is out there trying to make something of it and put what she has to use.....a little positive energy like that goes a long way in this world, i think....and in fashion too
