Talking Movie Awards 2011

64th annual DGA awards nominees
  • WOODY ALLEN Midnight in Paris (Sony Pictures Classics)
  • DAVID FINCHER The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (Columbia Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures)
  • MICHEL HAZANAVICIUS The Artist (The Weinstein Company)
  • ALEXANDER PAYNE The Descendants (Fox Searchlight Pictures)
  • MARTIN SCORSESE Hugo (Paramount Pictures)
Only six times since the DGA Awards began in 1948 has the winner not gone on to win the corresponding Best Director Oscar.

Big names missing out are Steven Spielberg (War Horse), Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), Bennett Miller (Moneyball) and Tate Taylor (The Help).

Pretty surprised Fincher got in for GWTDT. I guess the film is a legit contender for Best Picture afterall. Surprised that Bennett Miller missed out for Moneyball. And poor Terrence Malick. :(

The fact that Midnight in Paris doing this well is so upsetting. The movie was just so mediocre and blah.

and thoughts -

^Me too. Actually, I would have loved if anyone but Meryl Streep won, which is saying something because I love Streep. I just wanted the winners to not be the same people like always. Also... I'm mad that Maggie Smith didn't win Best Supporting Actress in a Mini Series for Downton Abbey... she's the best!

Such a strange batch of winners. I guess The Artist stays as the frontrunner. It did lose Director though. I can't see The Descendants winning anywhere else, so this is probably going to be it for that one. Boring Drama Lead Acting winners.

I really don't know what my overall opinion is on the winners as there isn't really a front runner for films and I haven't seen enough of them yet. TV was fine but predictable. I think The Artist will go on to win Best Picture Oscar. Happy for Michelle Willams. Still 100% believe that Rooney took Kirsten Dunst spot.

SNUBBED AGAIN is a huge topic on the net right now -

^Wait, there are people who're saying Leo was snubbed? Leo already bought his way through to a nomination at the cost of Gary Oldman.

^ not really snubbed more of ''HAHA your Oscar bait film didn't get you the award AGAIN. Try again".

And another one -

Sorry but even though I think he is a great actor its all so funny

^All the Leo jokes are cracking me up so much, my tumblr dash is full of them.. My favorite was the one with the Adele's Someone Like You playing

But he should have been thankful for even being nominated. If he gets it someday, I hope it's for something deserving.

He has been looking a bit better lately.. less bloaty. I think Australia did him good. Though I'm still in awe of how Conan O'Brien managed to predict Leo's facial evolution so accurately.

ETA: There have been so many great female performances this year so I'm surprised how lackluster and boring the category is. Even if there's no way of predicting the winner (like last year) it's still a boring race with no wild cards amongst the nominees so far

The Bafta noms are mostly what I expected. But there are some ludicrous omissions and nominations.

The Iron Lady shouldn't have been nominated for anything, let alone Original Screenplay. It was a terrible film with Meryl Streep's impersonation of Thatcher grating after a very short period of time.

And yet they didn't nominate Olivia Colman for her stunning performance in Tyrannosaur? No support for the home breakthrough talent? At least Tilda got in.

Jim Broadbent got into Supporting Actor in place of the chapter pick Eddie Marsan. This was one of the worst things Jim Broadbent has ever done! (yeah, I really hate that movie.)

And Judi Dench again? C'mon Bafta, have some imagination.

^ and Carey for Drive? WTF. I love her ok but that role could have been played by anyone. Wouldn't her performance in Shame be a better choice.

She was longlisting in Leading Actress for Shame and didn't make the cut.

The fact that Olivia Colman didn't get nominated here is embarrassing. Stunning performance. That's the local performance they should've supported, instead they go for Carey Mulligan, Jim Broadbent and Judi Dench (how many of these does she have anyway?)

I'm pleased by the across the board love for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, though that was to be expected. I'm still holding out hope that Gary Oldman will ride that British voting block to an Oscar nomination over Leo.

Strange that Hugo missed in Best Picture, despite all those other nominations. But The Help gets in? Ok.

You know what I realised I loved so many movies last year but hardy any of them are getting nominated. 2011 was the year of blockbusters for me.

Fingers crossed for Gary and Michelle at the Baftas.
