Talking Movie Awards 2011

btw,did you guys hear about the reaction to rooney mara's name being called? apparently journos in the room were verbally stunned, likely as they expected tilda's name to be called.

The fact that people are upset that they nominated Rooney Mara is ridiculous.
That girl put her heart and soul into that role and she did an amazing job. It's definitely worth the nomination. It sucks that Tilda got snubbed, but I don't understand why Rooney is the one being singled out as not deserving?! If I had to single out anyone in that category who should not have been nominated in place of Tilda Swinton, I would choose either Glenn Close or Meryl Streep. I didn't think either of their performances were the best this year.
They were great, but Tilda's was indeed better than both of those.

Either way, Michelle Williams will no doubt win it.

The interesting category will be the Best Actor one. Now that Gary Oldman is in it, I would love it if either him or Brad Pitt win it. This category seems like one where anyone could get it.

I personally think Glenn Close's inclusion was more of a shock than Rooney's. I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yesterday and I think the nomination is well deserved. I definitely think Tilda was completely snubbed but she doesn't play the game at all and she has elegantly put how much she didn't care about her first Oscar and what she thinks about the big studios.

The biggest and most pleasant surprise was Gary's inclusion. This man should have won at least two and to think that this is his first nomination is unfathomable.

Iits all about money and how hard you are willing to campaign for it.This year's Oscars is very weak.I hope Gary or that guy from the silent movie wins for BA and lord let Viola win , don't understand Michelle's or Rooney's nom.Too contrived.

I thought the Bafta list was boring in its predictability. So at least Oscar surprised me even if it was a WTF reaction!

I'll state on the record right now I hate most of Stephen Daldry's films. I thought The Reader was absolutely dreadful. So I couldn't even bring myself to watch Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, especially after hearing some bad things about it from those who have. Guess I'll force myself to watch it now.

W.E. got a nomination for Costumes. And that had appalling reviews. But history will record that W.E. got more Oscar nominations than Shame, Melancholia and We Need To Talk About Kevin.

No Tilda Swinton. That's a travesty. I'm not gonna object to Rooney Mara's inclusion - I thought she was great in Dragon Tats and I liked the movie overall. Don't know about Glenn Close - I don't think her movie even has a distribution deal in the UK at the moment. I would have put Tilda in place of Meryl Streep for her Thatcher impersonation which started to grate after a very short amount of time.

No Ryan Gosling? No Project Nim in Best Doc? No Dragon Tattoo in Best Score?

Here's the vid of them reading the noms. They cleverly leave EL&IC right to the end so you can hear people dying of shock at the Academy's collective misjudgement.

I was confused about ELI&C's nom until I watched the video. Scott Rudin's influence is bettered only by Harvey Weinstein.

So many movies to watch! I hope SOPA gives me time to download LOL

I'm happy and dissapointed by the nominations. Happy because Gary Oldman and Démien Bichir, THE TREE OF LIFE and A Separation :buzz::buzz: and dissapointed for Tilda Swinton, Fassy and Kirsten Dunst(I had the hope )

OMFG Démian! :shock: :wub: :cry::cry:

I wasn't planning to watch any of the awards after seeing they kept up with the stupid nominations (Ryan Gosling for doing nothing, Meryl Streep for being Meryl Streep, etc) and overlooking Lars' Melancholia and Martha Marcy May Marlene.. and Faust!. But they've surely made amends!. Démian is an EXCELLENT actor. And I gotta see The Artist asap, I love that Bérenice was nominated for it.

So excited!. And go Iran!.

Sobriquet87 took the word right out of my mouth. I completely agree with everything you said, especially about Rooney Mara.
She delivered the most haunting performance this year as far as I'm concerned. I don't get why people are so mad about her when Melissa McCarthy basically sh*t in a sink Carey Mulligan's nomination for SHAME. It's indeed sad that Rooney had to bump Tilda to get on the list, I really wanted Rooney get a nod after seing the film but I thought she would take the place of Glenn Close who's IMO the most overrated performance among those 5. Also she deserves to be this year "new girl" star more than Lizzie Olsen or Shailene Woodley by far. People should stop complaining about the buzz and go and see the film or simply get used to it because she really delivered a career-making performance. Yet she won't win, even though I'd love her to, I think it's between Viola and Michelle.

As for the actors, I'm really intrigued by Demian Bechir now. I like the fact that he's almost unknown, and I'm dying to see a Better Life. But I'm a bit upset that Michael Fassbender didn't make the list especially since Gary Oldman did and apparently the screening for Tinkler Tailor wasn't really good as well. But I'm sure Fasswonder will have others occasions in the future; same for my dear Ryan Gosling however I already knew it was dead for him. I'm actaully a bit shocked that Leo got snubbed again, and I might be the only one on this but for me he has as much credits if not more than Jean Dujardin and George Clooney who I found really underwhelming and over-hyped. I'm still betting on Brad and I won't change my mind. He deserves to win since the Academy Members won't give it to Gary Oldman.

I think Woody Allen is gonna win Best Director, and since Midnight in Paris is the very first of his films that I completely loved I'm all for that.
Bridesmaid was great but I don't think it deserved a best screenplay nomination yet there's no chance they're gonna win so... Best adapted screenplay should go to Hugo and best orginal screenplay to Midnight in Paris. I'd love Chico and Rita to win best animation but I'm pretty sure Puss in Boots will get it. And finally my pick for Best Picture is The Tree of Life, I really see this coming. Though I can't believe Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close made the cut.
I'm still really pissed about the snobbery around SHAME, sorry for the stupid pun but that's a real shame.

So true, Rooney, I think, deserved the nomination... Melissa McCartney however I don't consider an oscar-worthy performance.
Carey Mulligan is a great actress and she deserved the nomination, so did Tilda and Kirsten. Tilda i'm bummed about, but Kirsten I'm really upset about because I don't know if she would get another really great role like Justine again.
and like Shame, Melancholia was one of the best films of last year and the academy totally forgot about it. Von Trier deserved his nomination.

I don't see how Michelle is a lock. No major critics', no Globe or BFCA and to be honest, I don't see her winning the SAG or BAFTA.

Melissa McCarthy just needs to go home, seriously. All of the great comedic performances they have snubbed (and all the great performances they could've nominated in her place) and they nominate that? I just don't get it. Was it because she was speaking in a funny voice? Was it that cheesy inspirational speech? The airplane scene? Because Kristen Wiig was much better than her in that scene (and in the whole film) She was great in Gilmore Girls and The Nines, but here? lol.

Usually, I never say this because there is at least one category I'm happy with, but seriously, just terrible. If there going to keep this up, they'll be nominating Meryl Streep for farting next year. Maybe a Best Supporting Actor nomination for George Clooney flossing his teeth? It's just gotten lazy. I have to say, though, I really loved Brad Pitt in Moneyball.

Gary Oldman. YES.

And I'm happy for Demian even though I haven't seen the film. Hopefully the offers will start to pour in for him. Same for Jean Dujardin. :brows:

Glenn Close, I've grown to not mind her getting a nomination for this.

Viola Davis can do better as an actress, but I still love her.

I hope Jessica Chastain wins Supporting Actress. Did you notice that they put a picture of her in The Tree of Life when she was actually nominated for The Help? lol. Seriously, though. Get it, Chasty! I think she was better than Octavia Spencer, who, to me, just looked like she had a sour face all the time. She had some great moments, though, for sure. Love Bejo and McTeer.

I'll reiterate: GET IT CHASTY!

Where did this rumour about the Tinker Tailor Academy screening in LA come from? Think how many people fit in one movie theatre compared to the number who vote in the Academy. Even if there was one frosty screening I don't think that would have had so much effect. The British membership would have definitely gone for it. It would have been a much better ninth Best Pic nominee than EL&IC.

I think Woody Allen is gonna win Best Director, and since Midnight in Paris is the very first of his films that I completely loved I'm all for that.

Do you not like his older stuff? For me he's yet to better Manhattan. But Midnight is certainly the best of his recent work. I liked Vicky Cristina but the voiceover spoiled it.

I don't see him winning but it would be kinda cool. Is he actually gonna turn up is the question? He's no fan of award ceremonies.

I hope Jessica Chastain wins Supporting Actress.

Love Bejo and McTeer.

I'd be happy with Jessica Chastain winning, more for the body of work she's produced in the last year. Remember those discussions about possible split votes ruling her out. Imagine getting eliminated because you've done too much good stuff.

Isn't Berenice Bejo's inclusion in Supporting Actress a minor case of category fraud? Bafta got it right. But I can see the Oscar Actress category is already crowded.

What a disappointing year. Agreed with fantastical (no Fassbender and no Gosling??) and modela (weak nominations all over the place) – I wonder if the Oscar's night will be worth watching at all

I'm not that sad over the Tilda snub, even though I like her acting.:ninja:She supports Roman Polanski.

I don't think Tilda's personal beliefs damage her acting in anyway. She's brilliant and I admire her as an actor, whatever she chooses to be on her personal life is her matter only.

Happy for Rooney Mara and Gary Oldman.
Terribly disappointed at Octavia Spencer, Midnight in Paris (my least favourite film of the year), Kund Fu Panda 2, how do these get nominated?

Also sad about Elizabeth Olsen and Ryan Gosling.
