Tao by Comme des garcons

from doverstreetmarket.com

Introducing TAO Comme des Garçons designed by Tao Kurihara, ex St. Martins student, who has been designing the TRICOT line for 3 years. The TAO collection is a small and concentrated collection built around a particular theme each season. This season's collection, inspired by lingerie, is a gorgeous confection of wool and lace translated into coquettish corsets and shorts.

I was wondering where in NYC Comme Des Garcons is available?

this question should technically be in a shopping section... but anyway.

CDG boutique - West 22nd and 10th Ave.
IF - 94 Grand street
Barneys - 61st and Madison
Bergdorf Goodman - 58th/5th Ave
Saks - 50th/5th Ave
Jeffrey (just a snippet really) - W14th/10th Ave.

There was a blurb in Bazaar with photos of a couple of corsets, both in shades of ivory (one of which may be the same as one of the thumbnails already posted). Possibly in the issue with Ashley Olsen on the cover (Best of What's New)? I've also seen an interview with the designer somewhere, not sure whether it was print or online.

Thank you for the information Faust. Sorry if I posted it in the wrong place.

Hi, first-time poster in the D+C section...thought someone out there may be interested in these pics. The first four are from Figaro, the second, Spur.
I'm pretty sure I'm getting something from Tao!

Doesn't this look a little bit daft? Big wooly bra outside crispt white shirt? Not convinced, I'm sorry to say.

I actually agree with you. B) But I really quite like the corset tops as individual pieces. It's the styling that put me off, to the point that I don't even notice it anymore.
(And yeah, the bra...what's with that?)
Will probably go and check out the store soon.

I'm pretty excited about this
I have no clue where these pictures came from: a friend scanned them in from a magazine.

But they are pretty cool so I thought I'd post them anyway

if she s under the Comme des Garcons umbrella, it means she has something to say. She has my attention.

I saw some of her pieces in Dover Street Market, they are beautiful!

Her collection is a small one that focuses on a theme each season. for AW05, it's LINGERIE. She created bra, corset and pants out of knits...and also stripe t-shirts with the chest bit made out of lace...

I believe the bra over shirt look was a result of the styling of the magazine...

That's what I thought until I realized that the Figaro article (first four pics) features Tao herself as the stylist...hmm.

I actually forgot to add two more pages to that article which includes one full page of interview. In it she mentions (and pardon my rough translation,) that she picked lingerie as a theme for her debut collection (for Tao) since it was something that was always in the back of her mind. When she went to see vintage lingerie and crinolines, she was struck by the strength they held and decided to express that through knitted material because in her eyes, they are best suited for conveying the "hand(-woven/-made)" feel. The warmth and handmade feel knitwear have are what was important to her, as well as trying to create something different. She was also asked to describe Junya to which she replied, "He's a strict person." B) She hasn't really collaborated with Rei Kawakubo yet, but says she's frequently inspired by her collections.

From Hintmag.com

While many designers, let's say, forget to credit the talent behind their labels, Comme des Garçons' Rei Kawakubo, already the queen of collaborations, goes as far as to encourage the assistants in her employ to take the spotlight. First Junya Watanabe, now Tao Kurihara, a seven-year veteran of the house who, for her new label-within-a-label, Tao COMME des GARCONS, builds upon a single theme each season, with lingerie being the first. For the debut fall collection, Kurihara, also the designer of Comme's knitwear line, Tricot, set about crafting such over-the-top girly creations as boned-cable knit corsets adorned with lace ruffles and knit camisoles upon which crocheted rosettes, pom poms or bows are generously applied. It's typically, conceptually, deliciously Comme, but seen through bedroom eyes. Prices, if you must ask, are "designer," they tell us. At Comme des Garçons stores worldwide, at Dover Street Market in London, at 10 Corso Como in Milan, and Barneys New York.
