The movie “Out of Africa” was the inspiration for Taoray Wang’s fourth collection at New York Fashion Week. The Chinese designer wanted to deliver a lineup that “independent and international women will be drawn to.” It’s hard to tell whether she will succeed. Aesthetically, Wang had both hits and misses, but perhaps her clever use of fabric and interesting cuts will give her a push.
Wang opened with a safari khaki theme — including an off-the-shoulder blouse with tailored wide-leg pants, a collared shirt with maxiskirt and a skirt suit — all of which made no particular statement. The dresses that followed, two sheaths with a Greek statue torso printed on the front and a snake along the hip line, were not her best moments.
Things picked up toward the end though via a group of tailored suits, one of which was made in a printed black-and-white plaid silk and cut generously at the arms and tight at the waist. The highlight of the collection was an effortless blue shirt paired with wide, cropped khaki pants, as well as with an asymmetric skirt.
Ultimately, it will be for buyers to decide — Wang is opening her first store and showroom in New York at the end of 2016.
