Tattoos

vogue addiction, I know someone who has that Angelina Jolie tattoo on her lower belly. It looks really nice.

Mmm, I'm getting a feather on my side, like upper rib area. My husband and I are getting puzzle pieces that fit together on our wrists before he leave for Iraq. But I was wondering if you can get white and another color to tone it down? For example, black and white for grey? I didn't know if it worked that way, sorry if this is a really stupid question.

Oh you lucky girl, litchickuk! I really want one of my shin... but I know I just can't. :ninja: I'm definitely not that type of person to get a tattoo...

Thankyou honey!
Well I'm getting it extended now. Im having 5 smaller stars added to it so that it forms a cross. Each star represents a different member of my family with the big one as the main point for myself. I played around with differnet arrangements and I settled on the cross formation. Its not an overt cross which is good. It also means that I combine two different things with one simple tattoo - faith and family.

I believe that all tattoos should have a meaning to you. They are pointless if you just get something because it looks pretty as they are the ones that will be lasered off in the future or cause you to cover up the affected area. If they mean something you will always be proud of them no matter what age.

Im currently designing a lizard for my friend liz and working on a suitable memorial tattoo for my great aunt who died in march.

there is a white ink but it would be better to get the design shaded instead as it will be more clear. The white ink is mostly used as a mixer or to tone down colors rather than black. Shading will give you a tonal grey which is what you sound ike youre after. How well a tattooist shades reflects how good a tattooist is, so always check out who is doing it for you. Discuss with the tattooist beforehand and he'll talk you through it and what will work for your chosen design.

^Good idea with the shading.
I have a white one on my wrist and you can't see it unless youre looking for it. Which is how I wanted it because it's for my best friend that was killed. But I didnt know if mixing worked that way or not.
Thanks

I have heard that white ink only works for the palest of people, is this true?

if you actually wanted grey ink rather than shading or flat black and white merge, most good quality tattoists should have grey ink as part of their color collection. My tattoist has over 50 colors as standard and if something specific is needed will locate before he starts work! Just your artist if you have questions - a good one will answer any thing you ask.

white ink does work on most skins but to different effect. The paler you are the more you'll likely blend in with it. If you tan over it, you run the risk of it turning cream or a yellowy color. if you get it sunburnt it will go pink and then the color can return to normal or it will change color. if you avoid the sun and your pale but not white white then it'll work best for you.

As a general rule white tatoos are practically semi-permanent as they do color out easily and they are very likely to discolour. White ink is mainly for filling small areas, blending and toning down colors, not as a stand alone design color.

As i say to every one here - talk to your tattooist for full coverage. Some actually refuse to do all white tattoos because of what happens to them after - just scout it out and go with who works best.

This is what I'm getting done on august 6, except in different font and lower on the ribs.

thats beautiful, perfect shaping position and script matched the curvature of the location - be sure to post afterwards so we can see you take on this! Good luck

erin_k, that is a gorgeous tattoo! I am thinking of getting one with a phrase and haven't decided on a location, but that may just be the one.
I want mine to say "To love and be loved" in French, but I don't know the translation. Can anyone help me out?

meh, sorry i think thats bull. not all tattoos have to have a meaning....so many ppl try so hard to have a meaning to their tattoo because they cant admit they just like the design....like they got a star...because it represents LOVE and FRIENDSHIP...or their grandma who passed away

I was thinking the same! I have two tattoos and both have meaning to me but also they are aesthetically pleasing to me (even though they aren't in places I normally see). Especially on a fashion board I think we can understand that somethings just look good and don't need any other reason. Like art. Sometimes it's about something and has a story but sometimes it just looks good and is pleasing to look at. :flower:

i'm on the same board as pinksatin. i have six tattoos (which aren't that small) and they really don't ahve any deeper meaning. i find the designs so beautiful, that i don't see any point of trying to find "real" meaning to them.

Tattoo trends make me heave. Anything with any colour other than black in it, flowers, stars, butterflies, fairies, chinese designs for anyone who isn't chinese, anything off a tattoo ideas board in a tattoo shop, hearts, tribal stuff if you aren't in a tribe = WHAT ARE YOU THINKING. Of course there are loads of people who get these and I can't help but think a little less of them. In the same way I suppose that people who hate tattoos think a little less of me for having them.

just out of curiosity, what r ur tattoos like

I dont know if i mentioned it before but i have a tribal design on my lower back that is to the tip of my butt crack hehe but it looks sort of like butterfly wings. I got mine when i was 14 and till now im still trying to figure out what i want for my next tattoo. I just want a really pretty design nothing with meaning to it just something of an art on my body thats all. its so hard to choose, its like i dont want a butterfly, fairy, flower, they are pretty but a lot of people have those kind of tattoos.

I wish i was an artist because im not good with describing things to people lol. But i was thinking of getting one on my back since im asian i was thinking of something oriental like having cherry blossoms falling down my back with a pretty bird not a realistic looking one but i want the bird to look swirly sort of like my lower tattoo to match it. I also think coy fishes are beautiful too but argh i dont know so many to choose from!

'Mum' hearts, anchors, naked women, mermaids, naked mermaids, naked mermaids riding anchors and 101st Airborne insignias are frankly the only designs with any real cachet.
