Hahahha the hockey discussion made me laugh. Not that I watch hockey but hey..

Ok then, what about translating some hockey terminology?

First english, then russian - cyrillic, [translit] and (pronounciation) - and finally italian, also with (pronounciation); an apostrophe there means the syllable before it is the stressed one...


puck = шайба [shajba] (shah'-ee-bah) = disco (dee'-scoh)
goalie = вратарь [vratar'] (v-rah-tar') = portiere (poor-tee-eh'-reh)
defenceman = защитник [zashchitnik] (zah-sheet'-nick) = difensore (defence-oh'-reh)
forward = нападающий [napadajushchij] (napah-dah'-u-shee) = attaccante (attack-un'-teh)
face-off = вбрасывание [vbrasyvanie] (v-bra-see-van'-yeh) = ingaggio (in-gadge'-oh)
icing = проброс [probros] (prah-bross') = liberazione vietata (lee-ber-atsee-oh'-neh viet-ah'-tah) - literally means "forbidden liberation"
off-side = положение вне игры [polozhenie vne igry] (pah-lah-zhe'-nyeh v-nyeh' ee-gree') = fuorigioco (foo-oh-ree-jaw'-koh]

And finally, the best and worse of sport (depending on how they both behave

referee = судья [sud'ja] (sood-yah') = arbitro (ar'-bee-troh)
supporters = болельщики [bolel'shchiki] (bal-yell'-shee-kee) = tifosi (tee-faw'-zee]

Just a curiosity: during matches, you'll hear russian supporters crying out loud шай-бу! шай-бу! шай-бу! [shajbu] (shah'-ee-boo) which is the accusative case of the noun "shajba", which not only means "puck", but also "goal"; the meaning therefore is "Score a goal!"

football - bolasepak (or just plain "bola")
referee - pengadil
footballer - pemain bolasepak
football field - padang bolasepak
goal - gol
goalkeeper - penjaga gol
goal post - tiang gol
coach - pelatih
football practice - latihan bola
... will add more when my brain is functioning better

Btw, in italian the verb "brancare" (bran-kah'-reh) means "to catch", so the root must be a common one!

yeah your right so far only its 'como está' and hola has an h
the thing most people get wrong when learning spanish is they forget the '¡' and '¿' at the beggining of sentences like i forget the 'pas' in french

thats interesting..i got a dictionary that translates english to spanish and vice versa am learning slooowly!!!!!!!

can u expalin more about the i and the other symbol in from of sentence???

' you only put a '?' at the end of the sentence. well in spanish you also have a symbol thats '¿' that you put in front of the sentence when asking a question. so 'whats your name?' would be ' ¿como te llamas? '
